Hello Banner County and Good morning to you all! Here is hoping that everyone had a really nice 4th of July weekend. The weather sure was perfect for picnics, camping, boating, swimming, campfires and fireworks. We had a perfect spot at the lake and enjoyed family and friends. Some folks close to us had a big ‘ole white bulldog named Spud, and he was fun too. He liked to get in the water about as deep as I do. The rain held off, and we are thankful that it did, because Sunday evening it s...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Here in the big city things are pretty quiet. As you all know we had a hard rain last week and ended up with another inch in the gauge. Just in time for me as I needed to water the lawn. So far this summer I have not done that as nature has done it for me. This past week Vacation Bible School was held at the Harrisburg Community Church. At least on a day or two, eighteen children attended the session and several performed for parents,...

Well folks here we are at the near end of June and at this time next week it will already be JULY. Wow, I must be having a great time because the time sure is flying. Vacation Bible School has been going on this past week at the Harrisburg Community Church and was fairly well attended. Their program will be tomorrow evening so I will try to remember to tell you about that next week. We are sending get well wishes to Maxine Brown and hoping to see her soon. Birthday folks rounding out the month...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far This week here in the burg things have settled down quite a lot. The junior high girls will have volleyball practice in the gym at the school. I am thinking that those involved and the parents are aware of this because there is no information available as to time, etc. If you are unaware and would like to attend please call the school at 308-436-5262. Some folks will be celebrating birthdays this week include: Curtis Grubbs, Shaun Jones, Robby...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors, near and far. What a beautiful Monday morning we woke up to, a great start to a new week. Everything is so green and lush. I am not a farmer, but I have many friends that are and it needs to dry up some. They are trying to plow, plant, and are worried about plants that are in the ground and rot and rust. So maybe the rain could slack off just a little. Swimming pools are opening up and it is finally starting to feel like summer. Vacation Bible School will...

Good morning Banner County. What a beautiful morning it is with blue skies and no rain in the forecast for several days. My backyard looks like a jungle so maybe that can be taken care of as I have a young man in mind for that particular job. I apologize for not having any news in last week as I was under -the- weather so to speak. One of the two events that I would have mentioned would have been the passing away of Norma Soule, longtime Banner County resident. Norma will be sadly missed by...

Good morning Banner County, friends and neighbors! Well, we sure have had some weird weather, right? I just finished looking at this weeks' forecast in two different places and one says possible storms and the other one says snow. Well, I hope the snow is for Alaska and not Nebraska 'cause I am sick and tired of it. Guess if it snows that will just be tough nookies for me. So, school is winding down. Matter of fact, today, Thursday, May 21, at 11:50 a.m., the big yellow buses will be going...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Today is the middle of the month of May. Amazing how quickly the time flies, whether you are having fun or not. April brought us showers, May brought us flowers, more showers, and snow. For the second year in a row we had snow on Mothers' Day. However, this year we had enough snow to warrant canceling church on Sunday, and school on Monday, mostly due to extremely muddy, washed out roads. Before the snow started we had right at 4-1/2 inches of...

Good morning. Word of the week around here is soggy. We made it through the majority of the track season and prom with decent weather and we have needed the rain. Now I think we need a dry spell for planting and end of the year field trips. The dandy-lions sure are doing great this year aren't they? I have them in places where they have never been before. Counting today we have 11-1/2 days remaining in the Harrisburg school year. So we are still testing and we are still on the go constantly....

ome prayers were answered, we have had rain for four days straight. Puddles everywhere, stuck vehicles, wet dogs and muddy floors. Trees and fields, lawns and flowers all looking so much brighter. The dust has finally settled and allergies have backed off. We have mowed the lawn twice and when it dries up we will give it another go. We are happy to say that friends and neighbors, Ruth Brown, Maxine Brown, and baby Cady McGowan are all feeling better and on the mend. We are sorry to say that...

Good morning Banner County, friends and neighbors near and far. I know most if not all of us were praying for rain, well rain it did. Sunday morning there were still puddles in places, and amazingly suddenly there were green pastures and lawns everywhere you looked. What a beautiful sight indeed. Even the calves in the pastures seemed to feel better. The high school track team had a scheduled meet in Scottsbluff on Saturday and it was not cancelled. As of tomorrow the students at Banner County h...

Hello to all out there in Newspaper land! Here is hoping that you have had a great week so far, and if you are like me you are looking forward to another weekend like the one we just had, minus the wind. Saturday was a beautiful day and perfect that evening as the Banner County students rocked Prom 2015 Twilight Woods. Crowned Queen was Christina Grubbs, and King was Robby Fonseca. Attendants were Jewel Simonton and Daltom Jordan. Congratulations to all. The Civic Center in Gering was the place...

This past Sunday was Easter and it could not have been any more beautiful weather wise. Many of us enjoyed family, friends, and food, some at home and some away. Whatever your circumstance I hope you had the nicest time. Although my grands are getting fairly big, there is still one little one that we all get just a huge kick out of watching during the holidays. They have a whole different perspective on things don't they? We worked around the yard a little this past long weekend, but not as...

Good morning! Banner County, neighbors and friends near and far. Hope you are all well and dealing with the crazy weather. Weeks mixed with winter/spring and lots of wind here lately. A friend told me that we were supposed to have winds up to 60 miles per hour this past Sunday. I do not know if that happened; however, it sure gave it a good try. Forget trying to fly a kite, no way could you keep a hold of one. By about 5 p.m. it was absolutely beautiful out. Happy Easter to each and everyone of... Full story

Waking up Monday morning to a chilly, grey world was a let down after a beautiful spring weekend. However I do hope that the weatherman has it right as he is predicting great weather once again for this weekend. After all, it is track season The Wildcats will be participating in Kimball Saturday, March 28. The meet will start at 9 a.m. This is the first one of the season for them and the second is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, in Bayard, which also begins at 9 a.m., a C-D meet. Coach Kari...

Good morning to you all out there in news land, hope your week has been going well. The merry month of March is officially half over, can you believe it? The third quarter of school ended last Friday, March 13, and school will be out before we know it. The seniors are going on their well-deserved and earned educational trip here in the near future. Sometimes those are most educational for the adults involved. Years ago I was one of those adult sponsors, and as we headed back from Colorado we...

Good morning Western Nebraska! Well this time the weatherman was pretty much on target. He claimed and predicted snow, and snow it did. At times on Saturday afternoon it looked like a blizzard out my window. Sunday morning the sun shone bright and beautiful. The wind chose not to blow and that made the big difference. Zero temperatures once again and guess what? Spring sports practice begins at the school for our track students on Monday, March 2. According to my calendar spring officially...

News, Notes, and Nonsense Good morning all, hope you had a nice Valentine's Day! We had a nice dinner here at home, with candles and all. Fresh flowers and chocolate, can't beat that. I happened to be in the school Friday afternoon, and witnessed many little ones heading for the bus with bags and boxes decorated for the day. I asked one big brown-eyed kindergartener if she had candy in her sack. She smiled at me and held it a little closer. Guess she knew that thing about me and chocolate!...

News, Notes, and Nonsense Good morning Banner County, surrounding friends and neighbors, some near and some far. I hope that you are all doing well. This past weekend gave us a peek at the spring weather that is sure to come before too long, and that puts a smile on most faces. I have been in the spring cleaning mode so my house is a wreck. Some of the closets look really nice though. In the sports arena at Banner County School this week the junior high basketball teams begin the MAC tournament...

Good morning! Did all of you Super Bowl fans survive? I was not even aware that the game was this past weekend until the day before the game, which obviously shows you just how much that affects me! However, I did watch quite a bit of it, and was up-out-of-my-chair over some of the plays. Really, the Seahawks should have had it. We have a week filled with sports here at home, and I will add that if you missed last Friday’s games you missed some good ones. There have been either junior high or j...

Hello folks! I sure hope that everyone is doing well and hanging in there. Spring is something like seven weeks away. About that time we will probably get a foot or more of snow, and then maybe spring not too long after that. The ice has been the biggest problem, and it is all melted around here, but it sure is awful in other places. It is time for me to buy a bouquet of flowers. I end up doing that once or twice during the winter to remind me that spring will be here! Winter birthdays... Full story

Good morning! With school back in session we are off and running once again. If you were at the basketball game last Friday, you watched an excellent varsity boys game against Hay Springs. One of those where we won in overtime and had me standing in my seat. All other games were great too, but that one was exciting! I know I spend a lot of time here talking about school events, but most of you would agree that that is where most of us spend our time – one of the constants in our lives. Our k...

Good morning, friends and neighbors, near and far! Brrrrrrrrrrr, that’s it. News is over! Haha, am I the only one out there who is really tired of this bitter cold? Bet not. You all know how I really feel about winter anyway. Snow is great the day before Christmas and that is about it as far as I am concerned. Moisture is great; that is, if it ever gets warm enough to thaw. Yes, “Baby, it’s Cold Outside”. This is the third day that school has been back in session. Today, Jan. 8, the high sc...

Good morning! HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2014 held many bad moments worldwide, some personal ones as well, but most years do. We as an optimistic society continue to look forward to each New Year with anticipated hope for the goodness it will bring. Many celebrations begin the evening before with parties and family gatherings. Many times, I have stayed up with kids who wanted to watch the “ball” fall from Times Square in New York as the last seconds of a year were counted down. I decided to look into the...

You know I am going to say it, so I might as well. Here it is December, and I just can’t believe it! As I write this today, I am looking toward events up through the 10th which is pretty close to the 15th, which is only ten days away from ... well, you know what I mean! We do have a couple of trees up at our house and I am kind of getting ready. I have thoughts of Christmas caroling, programs at school, and the most looked-forward-to one of all: the Christmas candle light service on Christmas E...
