Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope your day is whatever you want it to be, a nice quiet day, one filled to the brim with family & friends, or somewhere in between. Yes, we do have a lot to be thankful for. Did you make it to the One-Act play, and Dinner Theater production this past Saturday? The play was hilarious, the dinner wonderful and was served and performed before a crowd of approximately 225. Plus a few more who attended the play performance after dinner. Job well done, and thank you...

Good morning! Waking up Monday morning to crystal blue skies, no snow, and very little wind seemed like a very good way to start off the week. The previous week felt like we were living in the freezer, and I didn’t talk to one single person who really liked it. On the positive side, the moisture was nice. I hope you were able to attend the Vets Program at the school last Tuesday. It was nice as usual. The speaker was Ron Johnson who presented a program of respect for all military, but also one o...

Good morning Banner County! Hope everyone is staying warm. We all knew this was coming, but we do not have to like it, right? Monday morning we started the week off with SNOW, the second one this year to be counted. The very first one was just a ‘skiff.’ However, the weather did cooperate last Saturday, Nov. 8 and it was a beautiful day for a beautiful 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Sherry & Stan McKnight. Shimmers of gold decorated the Harrisburg Community Church hall as many, man...

Good morning and welcome to some cooler weather. Last weekend was fairly decent; but with lots of wind and now my front yard is once again full of mustard weed. And to make things more challenging, we woke up with snow Monday morning! Now the weeds look very pretty. We have also had another time change and I don’t know about you, but I hate them. It takes me quite awhile to get my biological clock re-adjusted. On top of the snow, and the time change, I forgot about the Health Fair at the school....

Good morning Banner County, neighbors and friends near and far. Mowed my lawn again this past weekend and was thinking at the time, “Gee whiz, one more week and we are into November!” Fantastic weather we have been having, and it rained Sunday evening; lightning and thunder. This week for school events we have a high school triangular meet here at home TONIGHT at 5 p.m. The other competing teams are Hyannis and Crawford. After these games, the girls will begin competing in sub district play, whi...

Hello out there, wherever you are. Last week, I mentioned the signs of the changing seasonthat are all around us – the leaf colors and cooler temps. Well here is another sign: I was in a store last Friday, at that time the third week of the month of October mind you, and guess what? If you guessed Christmas trees, etc. you are right. I get more and more turned off by all of that each year. They really are trying to steal all of the beauty and joy out of that time with their commercialism. Anyway...

Happy Fall,ya’ll! Wow, what a beautiful time of year. We still have green leaves and grass, plus fall colors and great weather. I just love it. Hope it is good for you too. I have to tell you, those Gulick girls are at it again. They recently got together to celebrate Maxine Lannings’ 95th birthday at her home. Sisters attending were Glenna Streeks, Janett Connour, and Janice Snyder; others were Harold Conour, Roy & Kay Edmunds, Kelly, Jennie & Richard Haefele, Tom, Kristen & Kaylie Trump, Sha...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far. We had the first day of fall recently and it sure is starting to look and feel like the season. Leaves are changing color and days and nights are cooler. The Wildcats played their last home game of the season last Friday. It was also Parent's Night for the seniors. The weather was perfect! On agenda this week for sports we have Tonight, Thursday, October 2 high school volleyball at home. The game begins at 5 p.m. and opponents are South...

Little chilly Monday morning in downtown Harrisburg. Warmed up nicely for the rest of the week however, and should be pretty decent over the weekend. I was hoping for some of that beautiful fall weather for Monday because our 4th graders were spending the day at Flowerfield. They handle the cold much better than I do, so all went well. I spent a day there last week. I am always impressed with the ladies who teach, the inter action with the kids, and the entire learning experience. School days ha...

Hello everyone! I hope you have been enjoying the summer season again this week. I am not sure how next one will be, haven't checked that far. We should have pretty decent weather though for our next football game against Wauneta-Palisade which will be this Friday, September 19 at home and will start at 2 p.m. The next day, Saturday will find the cross country team headed to Alliance. They will also compete in Scottsbluff on Tuesday September, 23rd. I do not have times for either of these meets...

Hello to all out there in Banner County land, neighbors, near and far. Fall is definitely in the air and we are starting to have the weird weather, 97 one day and 57 the next. Now we are dealing with dead mustard weeds instead of tumble weeds. Haven’t seen a snake in awhile though! As usual this time of the year most of the action here in Harrisburg revolves around the school. Last week was the first varsity football game and Homecoming to boot. The team lost but only by about one touchdown and...

Good morning Banner County! Here is hoping that you had a nice Labor Day weekend. We had a really nice stay-at-home-and-get-something done week-end, and it was great. I am trying desperately to finish up some things around here before the cold weather gets here. We had our first day of pre-school this past Tuesday and that was the start of Homecoming Week. Tuesday was 'signature day', the halls were decorated and a movie was shown that evening. Wednesday was 'crazy day' ,Thursday is 'class...

Good morning Banner County. At least for most of us Monday started out much cooler and probably not all that bad. However, a fire west of us a few miles kept the volunteer fire department busy beginning Sunday afternoon and all through the night. The fire was still under investigation as I wrote this the fire burned well over a thousand acres. It was still burning Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. so none of this is final as far as the amount of damage that was done. Area firemen came to assist as...

Good morning! and another hot one is in the forecast. Wow, August is coming through true to form. The hot weather is supposed to drop about 20 degrees next week and we will probably all be too cool! Maybe the snakes will take off, I doubt it though. More than likely they will be hiding in corners trying to stay warm or lying in the sun for the same reason. We had three here one day last week, and I have lost count of the total. One thing I know for sure is that we have had more rattlers than...

Good morning Banner County! Same to all neighbors, near and far. We find ourselves in the middle of August. I can not believe it. Swimming pools will be closing and schools will be opening! The YMCA will be closing August 15th at 2 p.m. so the entire pool may be repainted. They expect to be closed for about 8 weeks. Most, if not all, out door pools are closed for the year. For many students, School will be held for a half day tomorrow, Aug. 15th. However, Harrisburg school bells will ring loud...

It has been pretty warm here in Banner County this past week. The fire department has been out a few times and we all sure hate to see that. The last time I know of was a fire at Banner Feeding on Saturday evening. A possible one on Sunday evening. We have had a lot of nice rain, but with the harvest going on it is pretty dry in places. The Kimball/Banner County Fair is underway this week. Today is actually busy, busy because most animal weigh-ins are taking place. The fair grounds will be...

Good morning Banner County! Harvest is well under way and completed in many parts of the county. With temperatures dropping a good 20 degrees a day or two this week, we are just hoping to get the wheat all in and be done with it. Last week was a busy one, still working on summer clean-up and thinking about fair and school. We ended the week with the potluck at the Harrisburg Community Church. Many folks are pretty busy at this time so the attendance was smaller than usual, but still really good....

Good morning to all of you! Harvest is underway for the wheat farmers and hopefully all of you will get’er done before we have any bad weather, so far so good. Last weekend sidewalk sales were hot and heavy in downtown Scottsbluff. I did run into a few of you there. I happened to have my youngest grandson with us and he held out amazingly well. I do believe his favorite part was the lunch stop at Runza and the ice cream cone he shared with grandpa. Have you been to the new Runza? While we u...

Good morning Banner County! hello to friends and neighbors, hope all is well with you. With Oregon Trail Days over for one more year, the summer marches on. We skipped much of the activities, but took in enough to last for awhile. The weather was terrific for the Craft Fair in the park Saturday morning. After the monsoon that they had in Gering Friday evening, I was wondering. Some cars were flooded out during that one along with the streets and over flowing drainage system. I always enjoy the...

Wow, here we are looking at the middle of July, wheat harvest will be upon us soon if it hasn’t already. A beautiful vacation with relatives, grands, and kids was just what grandma needed! I have always known that I would love to live closer to water, sand and warmer weather and visiting is just pure joy. Coming home after all of the sightseeing and people is nice too. I was even to a point of missing my dog, and he drives me nuts a lot. So welcome home to Banner County to me So now we can c...

Happy Fourth of July Everyone! With picnics, parades, and popular fireworks everywhere you look, it is a happy time of the year for sure. Remembering and appreciating the freedom that we have is a great thing indeed. I think of our current service men and women at this time more than on Veterans Day and Memorial Day. As we celebrate we need to remember those who are currently fighting to keep us safe and free and thank them endlessly. Vacation Bible School at the Harrisburg Community Church was...

Wow! Can you believe this weather? Monday morning we had exactly one inch of rain in the gauge, and more throughout the week. I know the area farmers appreciate it and so do all of the trees we have recently planted. I hope it does this off and on until harvest. One day last week Joe went out to do chores and found a huge bull snake draped across the back of the golf cart. He peddled pretty fast back to the house, and I didn’t blame him one bit. I went out to make sure it wasn’t a rattler and...

Good morning to you all! It was good to see, those of you who were able, out and about this past Saturday, as Harrisburg celebrated it’s 125th year as a County. The weather was fairly nice, little too much wind, but at least the rain held off. It was great to see a few new entries in the parade, I hope they plan to participate again next year! It was also good to see the teenage crowd attempt to be involved as they brought out the ‘dunk tank.’ However, it was disappointing that they were unnec...

Happy June to you all. It sure has felt more like fall on more than one day this past week, right? The rain has been great and the countryside is beautiful, but it has been cold! More rain is expected this coming weekend and as you know we don’t want that for our local Quasquicentennial, or 125 year Banner County celebration. Historical Day will begin June 14, with a pancake feed at the fire hall at 7 a.m., followed by a fun run at 7:30 a.m. The barbecue cook-off will get started at 9 a.m. a...
