Good morning! I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful, cool summer morning that we have had for the past several days. The rain we have been getting sure has been nice. The fields and pastures are looking great. Have you seen many snakes yet? We have quite a few bull snakes out and about, scaring the socks off of us when we least expect it. The work for the 2014 Cattlemen’s Ball is coming to completion as the folks involved put on the finishing touches. The Central/Banner 4-H Club members w...
Hello Banner County! What a brilliant green countryside we have at this time. We had one-half inch of rain again last evening. That puts a smile on my face, more mowing, but a trade in for less watering! Yes, school is definitely OUT for the summer. According to the weather channel it will not only look like summer here in the Burg and surrounding count, but it will warm up a lot and feel like summer too! Speaking of school being out though, it may be a long summer break around our house. We...
Good morning! My weather bug is predicting scattered rain showers everyday this week. So we will see. It is pretty green here in Banner County as of right now, and that makes it beautiful. As of today at precisely 11:50 a.m. school is out for the summer! The spring concert put on by grades 4-12 last week was really nice. It always amazes me to see how much those kids improve in such a short time. I needed to pick up some things at the school last week and I knew it was Farm Safety Day, so I was...
Hello to all! Was this past Sunday a Mother’s Day one to remember? We had semi-planned a barbecue. With 6+ inches by 1p.m., we cranked up the grill and continued on. It was a fun time, but not exactly as we had expected. I thought they had canceled the snow prediction, and found much to my dismay, that I was wrong. Oh well, all is well that ends well, and we do need the moisture. School was canceled Monday morning and looking out of your window you may not have seen a reason for that. H...
I do believe Spring has sprung, I have dandelions in my lawn anyway. I’ll take them to, it feels good to have some warm weather. The seniors at this time are off on their “educational trip” which is just being politically correct in saying that they are on sneak. Personally I like the “sneak” version much better. This class of 2014 will be graduating on May 17 at 3 p.m. The kindergarten class will be holding their graduation Thursday, at 1 p.m. If you are not personally connected to any of th...
Good morning here in Banner County and to our neighbors near and far. This past weekend proved to us once again that it is possible to have several different seasons within a 24-hour period. Sometimes less. Friday was beautiful, almost 80. Saturday, cooler wind … Sunday rain, snow, no electricity for almost 3 hours...and getting pretty chilly! Ayden went to do her chores Sunday early afternoon and made an interesting discovery. She has a pen for her older ducks, which currently house Jeffery (...
Easter Sunday was a beautiful day, all day! And the gorgeous weather has continued everyday this week. I will take it! I do believe that all of us have had enough of old man winter. With the Easter holiday the Banner County students had a four-day week previous and after, so this being the ‘after’ not a whole lot there to tell you about. District music at WNCC was today, so more on the results will come up later, and scheduled track meets Friday for the junior high at Chappell beginning at 9 a...
Good morning to all! Aren’t you glad that this past Sunday was Psalm Sunday and NOT Easter Sunday? Wow ... this crazy weather! My ‘Weather Bug’ predicted this snow and was right on the money, blast it anyway. We had beautiful Christmas card pictures Monday morning out of our windows; dazzling blue skies and unbroken pure white snow settled on the cedar trees and the distant hills. Not bad for December in April. Oh well. Next Sunday it is supposed to be beautiful with nice temperaturers. A great...
Good morning Banner County and surrounding friends near and far. I do believe that spring has sprung, although as surely as I say that it will snow. I have had tumble weed duty as often as I possibly can get out there, and let me tell you, I still have a month of work ahead of me. I am not alone on this job either. Rod and the kids have also enjoyed the task. Might not have a good choice of wording when I say ‘enjoyed,’ but I will let you fill in the blank! Happenings in the Burg this week inclu...
Hold onto your hat and put rocks into your pockets! My gosh was the wind ever trying to blow my house down. How about you? Do you dislike it as much as I do? Beautiful day except for that outrageous wind Monday morning. Hopefully the weather will just continue to improve as the week wears on. Our girls’ traveling basketball team finished up this past weekend in Chadron. One heartbreaker was a one point loss, but they learned a lot in the over all course of their time spent. Thank you very m...
Good morning everyone, friends and neighbors near and far! With the exception of a few cool days the weather has started acting like maybe spring is on her way. This morning there was the biggest, fattest Robin in my yard, made my day. We are all dealing with the wind and tumble weeds, and how about all of that snow melt? My gosh, roads are washed out all over and fields have become ponds, if not lakes! My friend Kelly was talking about ducks in water by their place, in what actually is a wheat... Full story
Baby it’s COLD outside! again. or still. We have at least 8 inches of the fluffy white stuff laying about. Church services at the Harrisburg Community Church were cancelled due to poor road conditions. Roads were pretty much a mess everywhere over the weekend, and hopefully will improve as our week moves along. School had a 10 o’clock late start Monday for the same reason. I don’t think it is supposed to be much warmer though. Banner County students are finished with wrestling for the seaso...
Hello Banner County and friends! Does anyone have any tumble weeds? If you are missing any, I think they might be at my place. For once though I have appreciated the wind ... drying out the mud. March weather is just around the corner. Banner County School was dismissed several days last week for various reasons, winter break, and an In-Service day and Curriculum Day for the teachers. However several sports activities continued throughout the week and as of now the varsity wrestling competition...
Forecast says it will warm up quite a lot in the next week. All I am going to say about that. Guess I am really tired of this and ready for spring! Speaking of winter and the cold, the Winter Royality Dance was held at the Banner County School this past Saturday. Crowned Queen was Dalle Rutledge and King was Wyatt Nielsen. Junior class attendants were Juewl Simonton and Kadan Huber; sophomore attendants were Paige Cross and Cole Carey and freshman attendants were Savannaha Jordan and Cole... Full story
Good morning! It has been cold outside. By the look of it it will continue to be this way for awhile yet. I did not give one thought to the amazing Pennsylvania Phil, the weather predicting groundhog last week. Sunday came and with it reminders of him. One quote I seen by Maxine said “Super Bowl on Groundhog’s Day, count on winter going into six weeks of overtime.” That is another one that slipped my mind, the super bowl. Guess you can say my favorite part of that is the Clydesdales. And to qu... Full story
I have decided that Mother Nature needs a vacation. We have 21 degrees as a high one day, two days later it is close to 50, and the next day in the low 30s. Really? very little moisture/none. And so much wind that if we have moisture we wouldn’t even know it. Hummph! We need to skip February and have spring and lots of rain. Until then, I guess I will just do like the rest of you, accept it and hang on until it changes for the better. I won’t even mention the tumble weeds. So, here is hop... Full story
Good morning to all, and congratulations for NOT blowing away completely! Man has the wind ever been at it’s best. We have been plagued by tumbleweeds, like everyone else I imagine, but yesterday I seen some at a house in a corner space where they were about to reach the roof. Maybe at that point they would begin to blow over the house. At least we do not have them stacked that high anywhere at our house, not yet anyway. The wind has been a challenge to our patience, that is for sure. Here at h...
Good mooring Banner County! Is there anyone out there that is confused as to what month this is? One day it is January for sure and the next day it may feel like March or April. April is my month of choice — only 75 days — whoo -hoo. Although we are lacking in snow, we sure have had plenty of wind and tumble weeds. Something new that needs to be mentioned is the annual reunion of the Gulick sisters. They had their 35th annual Christmas dinner at Janett and Harold Connour’s in Cheyenne. Those... Full story
Good morning to you all, here in Banner County and to all of our surrounding friends and neighbors. It has been quite awhile since I have felt as well as I do today. Both physically and emotionally. As far as years go we all know about the ups and downs, it is called Life. Well, my life in 2013 was relatively calm until the last month. I had lost a favorite aunt earlier in the year, but other than that, I was looking forward, prepared actually, for the Christmas holidays. Well, things change in... Full story
Frigid, that it how it has been all around here for the past week, maybe longer. The chickens do not want to lay and I cant say that I blame them. One of my grandkids came in the other afternoon and was concerned because their nose had frozen shut. Of course us older, wiser folks know that that is a temporary condition, she was not so sure! My friend in Montana was having -50 degree weather with the wind chill a few days ago, so I guess not too many folks want to hear us whine about waking up... Full story
Well Thanksgiving is over, Black Friday is over and so is Cyber Monday. In at least two of the major shopping stores in our area Black Friday began on Thanksgiving Day. What kind of croc is that? I would like to hear your opinion, I just cannot believe that I am the only one who gets aggravated at this more and more each year. All of that aside, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I was really looking forward to the break, and was equally looking forward to school on Monday! One of these days t...
Good morning! A beautiful fall day Monday, and for a few following days, but as my weather bug predicted, cold and possible snow for today. Ugh. Thanksgiving is near though so that means less than 30 days until Christmas. Has this month really flown by or what? School wise it has been somewhat less active as far as outside school events. However, with the official start of winter practice this past Monday soon ballgames will be heavily scheduled once more. Wrestling for the junior high has been...
Good morning! Here we are smack in the middle of November. Hard to believe isn't it? The lawn is still green although this last snow wiped out all of the leaves. We woke up Monday morning to a shroud of fog for as far as we could see which was about ¼ of a mile. Cold too. I told the kids the bus might be a few minutes off due to the weather; she pulled in and Joe couldn't find his coat. She waited, and finally went ahead on to school, which is more than I would have probably done if I...
Good morning! What a chilly morning it is, the time has changed and so has the weather. No more sandals, for a few months anyway. Some trouble caused a total blackout here in Harrisburg last Sunday evening. We had two extra kids at our house and with the four of them it was pretty exciting. I am not sure how long it lasted, but the kids pulled out blankets and pillows (because we had a generator hooked up & lights in the living room) they all piled in there, while I got my flash light and went...
Good morning, Banner County and to all of our neighbors and friends. I hope everyone enjoyed the month of October as much as I did. It went by so fast that it was pretty unreal. Here we are facing the last week and looking straight at November. I saw a note not long ago that said we had 60 days until Christmas. That was a while back however. And I was shopping for some fall colored party cups while I listened to piped in Christmas carols. Bah humbug!! Anyway, today is Halloween, my least...
