Good Morning! Hope this finds everyone well and enjoying the fall weather and the turning of the leaves. This may not be Vermont, but we still have some beautiful trees this time of the year. I have heard that Brad Brown is feeling much better, and up and about somewhat. Great to hear that. We are also keeping Charles Anderson in our thoughts as he continues treatment and future surgeries. The Banner County School kids have finished ‘Red Ribbon Week’ this week. Information during this week is al...

Keystone, South Dakota as well as other places are now dealing with flooding. Other areas are still cleaning up with earlier floods or maybe destructive tornadoes. Our weather here has been pretty lousy off and on this past two weeks; however, I think we can count ourselves lucky considering how bad it is in those areas. This past Thursday evening was awfully bad with hard rains and high winds. The kid’s trampoline is on the ground. So are a few tree limbs. We were without electricity for at l...

Well. Weather was definitely the main topic, the ruling force in our lives this past week. I had planned on being out of town that weekend so I was on my computer with my friend the Weather Bug quite often. He kept warning of the nasty stuff to come so I planned on leaving earlier to out run the snow. The place that I was running to just happened to be where some of the heaviest snow landed, South Dakota. The retreat was cancelled. Ayden and I and many others were extremely disappointed, but we...

Good morning folks in Harrisburg, Banner County and friends near and far. Fall has officially arrived and you know last week one day we had hail. I have a pumpkin plant that is pretty well chopped up. As of yet I have not had time to clean it up, hopefully I will get to that soon. Pull the pumpkins and feed the rest to the chickens. Even the days that are into the 80’s have that lack of super-hot heat right now and it is just great! This past week-end was the 87th annual Farmer’s Day in Kim...

News, Notes, and Nonsense Hello Banner County, neighbors and friends. Great weather for ducks, isn’t it? My sympathies go out to everyone who is still trying hard to get wheat planted, beans in, and corn soon to follow. This weather has been pretty unusual for this time of year and I heard on the news that they have the first snow in the mountains up around Denver. I still have green tomatoes and pumpkins too! Still mowing the lawn, and until this past weekend have been watering. Did any of you...

Wow! What a week makes — difference in the weather that is! It has been downright chilly here a day or two. Personally, I have enjoyed it, although I hate the cold and still have outside chores to finish. Fall has definitely been in the air. The homecoming games were pretty exciting. Congratulations Wildcats, keep up the good work. The dance Saturday was fairly well attended and loud! Students really dress up now a-days, different than homecoming dances I went to at their age…a century or so ago...

Good morning! How has your garden grown? We have been blessed with cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, peppers … and my garden did not do very well. Friends gardens have, and I thank them for sharing. I made salsa one day last week, and I am planning on freezing more squash. Well, as I mentioned last week, this is homecoming week at the school, with kids dressed pretty zingy. Quite a few teachers too! The football team will play their third game of the season for the homecoming game Friday against Siou...

Welcome to September in Banner County, Nebraska and many parts of the country where the hot, hot weather continues! Early morning and evening have been beautiful however. We had a terrific amount of rain one evening last week, about Thursday I believe, and it was accompanied by fierce lightning and thunder that roiled forever. Was absolutely great! Friday early afternoon was a different story though. The clouds moved in, little lightning or thunder, and lights out at about 3:20 and stayed that...

Good morning Harrisburg, Banner County, neighbors near and far. I hope this beautiful weather is setting well with you. Some days have been too blasted hot, acts like August. This is the final week of that however, as we sneak right into September. I would like to wish some local ladies speedy recoveries from various minor accidents, major operations, and general health problems. All are good friends and we wish them well soon; Ruthie Brown, Sherry McKnight, Gwen Bayerl, and Wilma Post we are...

Good morning Banner County! Hooray, school has started once again and 2013-2114 is off to a grand start. Buses were seen all over the county as excited students, teachers, and parents awaited their arrival for the first day of school Monday, Aug.19. Everyone that I have talked to seems to think that this summer has just flown by. I know it sure has for me. Up until this weekend, I was not all that ready for the kids at our house to go back. All of that has changed … I am ready! They are too, r...

Good morning Banner County, all surrounding neighbors and friends. Here it is the middle of August — personally, I wish it was the middle of May! I am not ready for school to begin, which is four days from today. Guess I had better get in gear. The first day, Monday, the 19th will end with an early release and the remaining days of the week will be regular schedule school days. The school staff will start early with two full days, today and tomorrow. Good luck everyone, have a great year! A...

Good morning to all in Banner County, surrounding friends and neighbors. I recently heard a friend remark that they had gone to bed in July and woken up and it was mid-September. That pretty much sums it all up. Wow, has the weather ever changed. The first day or two it felt pretty good after all of the heat, however, now it is getting boring and not so nice. I need some sun, and no wind please! The 4-H kids had a plan to do some painting at the fair grounds and it has been postponed until next...

Hello Banner County, neighbors near and far. Harvest has been underway for quite some time now and so of course we have had a couple of nice rain showers, we sure need the rain, and I don’t think it has delayed the harvest much. We are sorry to write about the passing of longtime resident Agnes Wynne. Mrs. Wynne was born in Banner County and spent the majority of her 96 years here. In recent years Mrs. Wynne has resided in Scottsbluff. Surviving family still living in Harrisburg is son, Bill W...

Good morning Banner County! We have enjoyed some pleasantly cool mornings the past few days and rain! Some wheat and corn fields may survive until harvest yet. I certainly hope so. So many of our community members have been hailed out, some totally destroyed. We hate to see that and as we see the combines begin to roll into our area we keep a close eye on the weather, right along with you. One thing the hail hasn’t managed to destroy is the weeds. Things are looking pretty shabby around our l...

Happy Fourth of July! Rodeos, fireworks, and food. Celebrating our freedom and remembering those who have fought to keep us free. I hope you have a super day, all red, white and blue. No fireworks fires, please! Last week a very special lady, long time Harrisburg resident, Dona Buchanan who now resides at the Kimball Manor, celebrated her 82nd birthday. She was surprised by some of her friends from Harrisburg and treated to a little party at the Dairy Queen. In on the surprise were Bev Faden,...

Last week I referred to our weather conditions as “a roller coaster ride”. Boy, if I had only known how true that was going to be a few days later. Definitely not a good time either. Torrents of rain, hail, and worst of all high winds that did unbelievable damage in a fairly short amount of time; it hit Banner County over the course of two nights and will take much more time than that for folks to repair all of the damage. Some of the damage is irreparable, crops, but most is thankfully windows,...

We are entering this week with one left in the month of June. Unbelievable. I feel the summer slipping by and I really don’t want that! Waking up Monday felt like being in a fairy world with so much fog we couldn’t see across the yard. No wind which was a break for the flowers, and me too! Our calendar here at home is not quite so busy and I am thankful for that. My granddaughter attended Camp Judson last week and I was fortunate enough to be able to go for the last two days. What a great exp...

Good morning to folks in Banner County and to our neighbors! Beautiful weather that we have been having, it has warmed right up. Nice rain we received this past Saturday but, it would have been a little bit nicer if it had rained about 4 hours earlier. It started in just before the Fun Run during Historical Day and every one of the competitors were completely soaked. Not a one of them stopped though, as far as I know. The day continued to run a roller coaster type of weather pattern all day,...

Summer has finally arrived here in Banner County. I would love to complain about the wind, but then I stop and think of places like Oklahoma and decide we don’t have all that much to complain about. Hope your week has gone well. It sure has been busy! Vintage vehicles passed through Harrisburg during their practice run last Friday and competed for real Saturday and Sunday in the annual Sugar Valley Rally. Also, remember the bikers that were traveling through Kimball on old Highway 30, the L...

Good morning Banner County! If I remember correctly, May came in pretty much like a lion, looks like she may be going out like one too! We have been fortunate enough to have some rain now and then, and appreciate all we can get. School is out for us until August and last Thursday, the fifth and sixth grade classes ended the school year with a bang. They spent the day in Denver at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Three levels of various interests and a bus load of excited kids. Thank you...

The big news around here is school. Several track meets that had been cancelled due to snow were re-scheduled, plus district track. Amanda Harrision and David Gifford placed well at district and will be headed to Omaha for state competition this Friday, congratulations! Last Thursday, the fourth through twelfth grade students in choir and band performed during their annual spring concert. It was very enjoyable, thank-you students and to instructor, Mrs. Woundedarrow. I do not have any skivvy on...

Is spring finally here? By the forecast on my weather bug it seems to be. I read a comment yesterday that said “If Spring is here then you should smell like dirt at the end of the day!” I agree, only I might add, “or be up to your ankles in mud!” as is still the case in some areas at our house. My lawn needs mowed also, but I still have a swatch of snow about 2-foot wide the length of it. State testing is continuing at school and the class of 10 proud kindergarten graduates received diploma...

This year is almost half over, can you believe it? I sure cannot. Many folks have been out with flu like symptoms, and some have pneumonia. Odd for this time of year, and never any fun. Everyone is busy this week with track meets and graduations. The junior high team is in Chappell today for the Leyton tournament and they will travel to Chappell once again Tuesday, May 7, for the Harlon Sutton invite. Both meets begin at 8:30 a.m. The varsity track teams will travel this Friday, May 3, to...

Good morning! Another week has blown by here in Banner County. We had a hard time having school last week due to snow and mud. When people end up in the barrow pit or stuck for hours, it is a good time to just stay home. After being re-scheduled three times the FFA Banquet was held Thursday evening. Members conducted their meeting, showed a video, served 32 guests a delicious meal and elected new officers. Awards were also handed out and the chapter received a $500 check from Panhandle CO-OP,...

The foot or so of wet snow we had last week was welcome; even it meant closing the town for three days. If the forecast they have out now comes through more is on its’ way. There were several postponements last week and one of them was the FFA Banquet. It has been rescheduled for tonight, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. School did resume last week for Kindergarten Round-Up and 10 youngsters were in attendance with their parents in tow. Nine boys and one girl. This is likely to change by next August, a...
