small amount of rain this past weekend, and it was wonderful! By the time this comes out we may have several inches, or feet, of snow. The last few times the weather people have predicted blizzards, they have not manifested. We shall see. The mobile lab for the Ag students is supposed to arrive Tuesday, and we also have a planned field trip, the weather may change all of that. The Harrisburg Community Church hosted carry-in pot luck after church services last Sunday. As always there was a lot...

Good morning! I am sitting here this morning very thankful for a beautiful, blessed Easter and hoping yours was as well. Sunday was of course the grand finale to weeks of preparation and anticipation for this day of celebration. Elementary students at Banner County celebrated in several ways (sugar was involved) and kids all over the place were coloring eggs. We wanted to try an experiment at our house. I boiled some eggs, and once cooled Ayden and Joe put piles of shaving cream on a paper plate...

This week may be somewhat less active. At least I am hoping so, as the weather looks like it might warm up quite a bit. However, I am beginning to believe that the only sure thing that the weathermen predict is the wind. If I were a weatherman and I said that the wind was going to blow today in all of beautiful Banner County, or maybe it will not, guess I would hit it on the head! Okay, enough nonsense. One of the reasons I am looking forward to some nicer weather is because I am ready to be...

As I begin on news here around Banner County from this past week and looking somewhat into this one, the most current event has been St. Patrick’s Day. Mine started out with a fairly early telephone call from my sister-in-law out in Nevada. She was driving home from just finishing working the night shift and she asked if I was cooking up corned beef and cabbage for today. No way says I, as no one at my house would be interested in eating it. I did wear green socks though, self-protection b...

Hallelujah! We had snow, some moisture, not enough, but all of it is appreciated. I looked at the 10 day forecast, and 47 was the predicted low for the next week-and-a-half. Like the blizzard, guess we will get what we get. The warmer, nicer weather will be great for the track athletes who have been running around town, so please be on the lookout for them, especially when they are on the hill out east of town. Did you make it to the school open house last Thursday? I was in several different pl...

Banner County has seen a big improvement in weather over this past week. A little preview of spring. Hopefully a lot of rain will soon be coming our way. With the warmer weather this weekend my yard has been pretty muddy, something we haven’t had for quite a while. I have a few chickens that fly the coop ‘bout every day until dusk and then fly back in, or take up residence in the barn. The past few days it has been so nice they have been having a great time out in my front yard, tearing up the g...

Hello to everyone out there in Banner County, and to all of our neighbors near and far. Many of you are like myself and are looking out windows into beautiful clear blue skies, sparkling brilliant white snow, and trees that although they are bare, they are still as a tree can be … no wind! Woo-hoo! What a beautiful morning, and some moisture to! This past weekend we took a short road trip out of town and the weather felt almost like spring when we started out. All of that changed during the c...

With Valentine’s Day behind us and a few days off from school, it sure has been nice to just enjoy being home. We (I) have under taken a re-modeling project that I am getting really tired of and will be glad to have completed. Hopefully that will happen this week! The blizzard type weather we had last Sunday closed all of our local churches too, and although we hated that, it was necessary and better to be safe. On top of all of that we have had a lot of flu in the community, some with severe s...

ighbors near and far. What a busy week last week was. Music students at Chadron, district FFA at Gordon, and district wrestling at Sutherland! Not to mention basketball. As these particular sports seasons are starting to wind down we find everyone pumped up and more than one parent taking a deep breath. A little more rest is in the near future. As for the events that I just mentioned, however, Sandy Wounded Arrow, music instructor said that the young ladies that attended High Plains Music in...

Who believes that underground chipmunk Punxsutawney Phil anyway? Little snow here this past week and looking like warmer weather for at least a few days. Rain would be nice. This past weekend I had a chance to finally visit for a few minutes with Gwen Bayeral about her recent trip to Alaska to see kids, grandkids, and great-grands. Of course she had a great time although she returned with the beginnings of a cold, or whatever this current nasty bug is. She is well now and we are glad for that....

I hope everyone enjoyed the terrific warm weather that we had over the past week. Although we have more average temperatures for the last several days, I think it will warm up again somewhat. My yard is full of tumble weeds. I have no use for them and personally think they are a pain. We also had a smigin’ of rain one day, and reminded me that it still can happen, here in terribly dry Banner County! Last Sunday the Banner County Volunteer Fire men hosted a soup lunch and silent auction for T...

Boy, oh boy, has this month been a busy one! It seems like when school is in session we are all in perpetual motion, and believe me sometimes my personal motion is pretty s-l-o-w! The nicer weather has sure helped my attitude although I would dearly love some rain! Birthday folks this week include: Travis Cochran, Nathan Rogers, Reta Pahl, Camy Anderson, Larry Malm, Toria McGowan, Owen Gifford, Nathaniel McGowan, Corwin Bunny-Moore, Marie Parker, Louise Person, and Ronald Kennedy. Happy...

Greetings to all in Banner County, friends near and far. My wish for us all is a little more moisture, not quite such freezing temperatures. The snow with blowing winds caused an earlier school closing last Friday in at least two schools, including Banner County and several sports activity postponements. It has slowly but surely been getting warmer all week long. I must confess, I have not looked into the weather forecast at all. The boys’ varsity basketball MAC tournament should begin today, a...

Several ladies joined in celebrating the arrival of our newest community member, Miss Sierra Sue Johnson with a baby shower held Sunday, Dec. 30, at the Harrisburg Community Church. Mom, Stacy, allowed us to take turns holding this beautiful little one and I think we all had a great time. Sierra tolerated each of us and simply slept the entire time. Many wonderful and useful gifts were received and a nice strawberry dessert was enjoyed also! I have not paid much attention to baby items for a...

Hello out there in Banner County and to our friends and neighbors. We still have snow on the ground and is it ever a welcome sight. Although we could do without these freezing temperatures! News is going in early this week and so I have very little of it. We will be having a baby shower at the Harrisburg Community Church which I will have to cover in next week’s news. The shower is for Sierra Sue Johnson and her mom, Stacy. School also will be resuming tomorrow Friday, Jan. 4. I seriously c...

As I sit down to write this last newsletter of 2012, I cannot help but remember when we were on the brink of the new century, back in 1999. Some folks were pretty sure that the world was coming to an end. And most recently of course all of the hoopla about the Mayan Calendar and the same fear in the hearts of some folks once again. And here we are! Ushering in 2013 — it just doesn’t seem like 12 years have passed since this century began. The time just keeps going faster and faster. I, for one...

Good morning to each of you here in Banner County and to all of our friends and neighbors near and far. Here is hoping that you are all ready for the Christmas holiday. I am not completely, but I am getting closer. Guess that is a great thing since the 25th is only a few days away. Our college kids will be home and many other family members will be also, and that in itself will be a lot to be grateful for. Last week the Wildcats hosted Leyton in four basketball games, traveled to Creek Valley...

This past week has been pretty busy and aren’t they all this time of year? Students ended the week, some of them anyway by holding a 4-H meeting right after school in the cafeteria. Seven girls went over sewing machine mechanism recognition and then were introduced to a new sewing project by Lisa Brenner. They had a great time for a couple of hours and plan on meeting again next year to continue! The newly formed Banner County Booster Club also met that night and helped prepare the gym for t...

With weather predications mostly in the 60 degree range this week it sure does not feel like December, which is fine by me, other than I really want some moisture. Sort of like wanting my cake and eating it too! I also still have a few things that need taken care of outside that the good old wind has kept me from getting finished. Maybe this week. I talked to my sister in Wyoming the other day and she is having a terrible time getting into the Christmas spirit. Personally, I think part of that i...

Thanksgiving 2012 is pretty much a thing of the past and we are coming to a screeching halt with the month of November and slamming into December. Or at least I am. Many of you participated in the Black Friday shopping spree. I had stated very plainly that I was not going over there. We ended up in town at 6 a.m. that morning. I did find a few bargains at the one and only store that we were interested in shopping at. While there we ran into several Banner County-ites that were doing the same thi...

Good morning to all of you in Banner County and all of our surrounding neighbors! I am hoping that you are about to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, or maybe leftovers, depending when the newspaper arrived. What unusually warm weather we have been having, however I have heard that will soon change. As far as the Thanksgiving holiday though, it has been perfect for traveling. Whether you were one of the travelers, or the stay at home family, I hope you enjoyed all there is to be thankful for. Black Fr...

Good Morning, and woo-hoo! We have snow! I hate the stuff, but any moisture is greatly appreciated. Even the calves seem to be in a better mooood. This week starts out as a busy one, as most appear to be. Shortly after midnight, therefore Sunday morning, 11-11-12, Sierra Sue Johnson arrived weighing in at 7lb. 1 oz. and 21 ¼” long. Parents, Stacy and Heath, welcome her as well as big brother and sister, Lincoln and Trinity. The Banner County School staff and just most everyone else! Co...

Here we are enjoying the first full week of November. As I write this Election Day has not yet occurred, so by next week it will all be a thing of the past. I cannot say that I will miss all of the campaign hoop-la. I will however at this time express my ‘Thanks’ to all of you who voted for me and also give a smaller ‘thank-you’ to each of you that did not. On the one hand I would really appreciate a second term; on the other hand I feel that this is something that is entirely not up to me. So w...
