Some efforts seem excessive to us. I have a young man in my life that has more faith than I see in people five times his age. And yet, he put in three years of effort to study Martin Luther’s catechism and receive his first communion this past Sunday. Not all wasted effort is what it seems. Who knows how many Derik Earl Smith will encourage with his educated faith. Congratulations, Derik, for reaching another high limb to rest on for a while. Parents sometimes take us to the high parts of the t...

What a colorful and exciting time of year in Albin. The fields of green are bordered with fields of deep rich brown soil freshly tilled and waiting for the seeds of summer to be plunked down. The little sprouts of our town are having their spring concert at the elementary school Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. That is the same evening as the monthly town council meeting. Of course, family and little ones come first, so the council meeting has been moved from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The council has two...

Some towns have big brick signs welcoming visitors and residents. Some have big arches or other fancy structures to showcase their towns pride. Albin may not have a brick and mortar type of welcome but we sure have a unique one. On the way into town from the south and from the west, we have two bright and dark living town guards. Those male pheasants seem to live in the same spot from year to year. I don’t know that much about pheasants, but I am glad those two guys hang out to welcome people t...

The smell of hot dogs grilling. A crack of the bat and a ruckus of cheers from the stands. No, Albin didn’t get a Triple A baseball team. It seemed some of our neighbors and friends took advantage of the warm spring day Saturday and played some baseball. The flowers are starting to bloom around town. The Albin garage sales are set for this weekend. You can start shopping today, April 16. Signs should be posted around town, but stop by the community center first to see all the wares for sale t...

That little bunny delivered some tasty treats and good times to the little ones of Albin at the annual Easter egg hunt. The Albin Community Center sponsored the event that over 35 children and their families attended. A big thank you to the community center and town hall staff for helping with the day. The next thing hopping your way is the Albin Garage Sale April 16, 17 and 18. Dixie Malm is in charge of the event. Give her a call if you want a table at the community center, or would like your...

A light cover of snow reminded us that we never control the thermostat of earth. I doubt you heard many complaining. The moisture was much needed and encouraged to come again but perhaps in the form of rain next time. Another thing we don't control is death. Sometimes it seems to come early. When a loved one is suffering, it seems to never relieve their pain and prolong ours. Carol Moore passed away and our hearts go out to Bill and her entire family. Stop for a minute and send a card or call... Full story

The seasons sometime seem to hang around like smoke from a backyard fire of limbs and leaves. Once you think it is gone and over, you catch a whiff of it in the wind. Just like the smoke that leaves quickly when doused with some water, weather changes when the wind blows in a cold front. There was plenty of cleaning, raking and burning going on Saturday and Sunday. Lon Johnson even ventured up to his roof as Janet watched and supported from a lawn chair below. However, it seemed the spring fire...

Did you hear that? This weekend the sounds of summer snuck in before the spring flowers sprung up out of the cool wet soil. Above the coo of the doves, you could hear children laughing, and the hum of bike chains circling around town and the rhythmic bounce of a basketball on the court. On the field was a pickup game of soccer. One little boy was so anxious to play something outside, he was playing Frisbee. Alone. That is no small task. But he got his 60 minutes of exercise in for the day. More...

Old man winter has a little fight left in him. Albin and all of southeastern Laramie County was blanketed with snow over the weekend. I wasn’t too upset, even with the bitter cold temperatures that came with the snow. And more than a few farmers were thankful for the moisture. It will help the green green grass of home get even greener in a few months. Speaking of green, the annual Farm Show is sneaking up on us. March 25 is the date for this year’s event. If you would like more information cal...

Sometimes, you get stuck in a rut. Someone once told me the only difference between a rut and a coffin is the coffin is softer inside. Fortunately, the awesome Albin maintenance crew, also known as Bob and Arron Anderson, didn’t think we needed to be stuck in anything, rut or coffin. After the snow and then the melting and then freezing temperatures, the dirt streets of home were less than smooth. After a little TLC, I can say by firsthand knowledge, they are much better. The little Smiths w...

I noticed some geese flying north over Albin last week. Now, I am not sure if our flying friends are anything like us and sometimes fly around in circles when they are lost. I thought it might be a sign Spring was on its way. The little rodent from the east told a different story. Phil said to expect six more weeks of winter. I wonder if the geese will keep circling or decide to head south for a few more weeks. It is kind of funny, if you think about it. With all the technology and...

Have you ever watched one of those scary movies where the bad guy sneaks into a house? The homeowners hear the floorboards squeak. Something goes bump as the intruder runs into furniture? And the homeowners find something ugly in their home. I have snuck into my mom’s house after curfew a few times, but that is another story. Fortunately she didn’t meet me with a ball bat. This weekend the Smith house had an intruder of the sweetest kind. My oldest son, Norman, surprised us with a visit. The... Full story

You may not be thinking about sprinkler systems yet, or even water that is not in the form of snow. However, sprinkler systems are top on the minds of our council and mayor. The addition has come to a standstill, stuck until they figure out the problem. But just as sure as the snow will eventually melt, the community center addition will get done. It will be a nice complement to an already nice facility we have in Albin. The first home game for the Albin Wildcats will be Jan. 24 starting at 9...

What a pretty start to 2015 we had in Albin. The snow, still falling, covered everything in sight. But watch out for the roads. They are still slick and could cause you to run into something or someone. I took a new year’s run Thursday afternoon. The temperatures warmed to a balmy 28 and I thought it was a great opportunity to start a new resolution. Not even off 5th Avenue, however, a car came less than two feet from running into me. No big deal. It is icy and things travel when we want them t...

  • A little luck on your plate

    Charlene Smith|Dec 31, 2014

What are you serving this first day of 2015? Prime Rib? Turkey? Or maybe tailgate food for all the games. How about trying some foods that may or may not bring prosperity, luck, and all the good things we strive for in our lives. Supposedly, greens are eaten to start the New Year because they resemble money. And all of us would like a little extra green in our life. The belief goes, the more greens you eat, the more dollars you will have (and the healthier you will be). Maybe you like your...

  • Wrapping up candy in chocolate

    Charlene Smith|Dec 4, 2014

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. Or maybe it is us that has broadened our girths. Either way, Christmas is coming. Whether you nibble your way through the next four weeks with carrots and celery, or savor every bite of sugar, cream cheese and chocolate, there is no denying the many tastes available right now. Chocolate serves as a nice holiday treat all by itself. However, drizzle it over candy or completely wrap the candy in it and you have Weight Watchers worst enemy. Chocolate c...

By now all your guests, welcomed or not, have gone home. The leftovers are but a memory or shoved in the freezer for another day. And the scale keeps acting up, saying you weigh more than last week. Probably better to blame that ornery little cousin than the entire pecan pie you felt you needed to finish. Numbers aside, I sure hope the holiday was a pleasant one and you had the chance to sit and talk to loved ones and faithful friends who darkened your door. I had the opportunity to travel home...

Community – especially small communities – is all about the people in them. We celebrate victories alongside our neighbors, cry with them over the losses and help their loved ones grieve when time passes and they leave this world. Georgia Hanson, a longtime resident of the Albin area, passed away last week. Services for Georgia were held at the Catholic Church on Saturday. Her husband died not too long ago. Please keep Dennis Hanson and the entire family in your prayers. The community cen...

  • Let the spread begin (and not your waistline)

    Charlene Smith|Nov 20, 2014

From now through the first week of the New Year, even the healthiest and fittest people experience a little tightness around their waistline. Between the extra sweets at work to the family two-hour-long feasts, there is hardly a chance to back away from the table. Fortunately, most of us work off the eight to 12 pounds we gratefully receive over the holidays. My goal this time of year is to make every bite count. As the trips around the sun stack up, I have noticed the gifts of the season that...

The cold weather isn’t nudging the new addition to the community center along any too fast. The work is slow in the cold but it is moving along. The town council met Thursday evening. It was a quick meeting, less than an hour, and only regular business was addressed. Nothing new on the council’s agenda. A happy belated birthday goes out to eight-year-old Jenny Rooney. She celebrated her birthday on Monday this week. We hope she had an awesome day. The community center and town hall will be close...

  • Simple can be scary

    Charlene Smith|Nov 13, 2014

Some recipes scare me. For years, I would not attempt homemade cinnamon rolls, resigning my family to store bought, dry tube rolls or occasionally turning flaky biscuits into a version as close as I was willing to get to homemade rolls. Now, I make cinnamon rolls a couple of times a week, and even have the time down to about an hour from the yeast hitting the warm water to the frosting being drizzled over the warm rolls. You may not fear anything. You could possibly be one of those people who...

Sunday sure was the calm before the storm. Or rather, the oven before the freezer. There were children laughing on the playground, music being strummed in garages, and people out walking and taking in what seemed like the last of fall. Saturday found many of us at the community center offering up our love and support to the Dave Branigan family. A touching memorial for a well-loved man. ‘Through It All’ was a beautiful and fitting song for the service. Please keep Jean and all the family in you...

So, what did you do with your extra hour last weekend? It came right on time, ushering in the first significant snow of the season Monday. The clock gave the Branigans an extra hour with their loved one, Dave Branigan, before he passed away Sunday evening. Please keep his wife Jean and all his family in your prayers. It sounds like a funeral is tentatively set for Saturday, but look for more information at the post office or community center. The Halloween Carnival was wonderful. Between the...

Someone left the front door open. Or so it sure does feel like it. It must be time for Halloween because the temperatures took a nose dive down the thermometer. Remember to bundle up your little goblins Friday night. A late happy birthday to Travis Mclaughlin. He celebrated Saturday and we hope all his wishes came true. The Albin Elementary School Book Fair will be open late tonight, Thursday, until 7 p.m. to catch all you parents attending the parent teacher conferences. The “Sir R...
