Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 13, 2014

Senior night festivities didn't take away from the Burns fight against the Southeast Cyclones. Friday night, the Broncs went up against the Cyclones. In the end, the Southeast game was just a lot of hot air and no storm. "We started the game really well," said Coach Sean Patterson. "We loved our defensive execution and the effort that the kids gave in the first half. We were very excited to send our large senior class out with a big conference win." Burns shared the ball offensively and was...

  • Lady Broncs rebound from loss

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 13, 2014

Southeast Coach Bart Trautwein asked the referee early in the game if he could "get some calls our way." The Lady Cyclones weren't expecting Burns to show up to play. But the first quarter is where the competitive edge stayed and Burns fell to Southeast 38-53. "We played hard and gave good effort," said Coach Barry Ward. Ward chalked up the loss on too many fundamental mistakes. "We shot the ball poorly and got out rebounded pretty bad." Burns had to muster up the courage to load up on the bus...

  • Losing week for Lady Coyotes

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 13, 2014

Friday, the Pawnee Lady Coyotes loaded up for a conference game in New Raymer against Prairie. Coming in on the heels of more losses than wins, Pawnee and Coach Samantha Ramos were both hoping to see a spark before the end of the season. Pawnee took their time finding the basket but outpaced their opponent in points the second half. It was not enough though to overcome the15-point first half deficit. Prairie beat Pawnee 49-48. The week wasn't over yet for the Lady Coyotes. They had a...

  • Chicken Noodle Soup: Does it cure you?

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 13, 2014

Is it feed a cold and starve a fever or feed a fever and starve a cold? Many of us grew up knowing that when we were sick, our loving caregivers would offer us 7Up and chicken noodle soup. There is some science behind it. But whether it cures you or just bubbles warm feelings through the crud by the loving care it represents is unclear. For years, people have turned to the soup as a remedy to treat the common cold. Some people say a good day of rest and chicken noodle soup will treat what ails...

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Chris Lidstone of Lidstone and Associates reviewed the options for financing the Kimzey land purchase. Pine Bluffs Town Council members listened Monday evening as Lidstone laid out three different scenarios that could finance the purchase. Each option has different expectations and requirements. Lidstone said he would recommend the council look toward the Wyoming Water Development Commission and the Wyoming Drinking Water State Revolving Fund option, which would be $1,541,000 in a grant and...

  • Legislature readies for fast paced session and budget decisions

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Budget session, Representative John Eklund says, it is a fast paced session. It is a faster moving session in the biennium and he prefers a slower pace. "It is really hard to break away from the budget and there is a lot on the floor to decide," Eklund says. Sixty-seven bills are starting on the house side with 70 making their way through the Senate side of the capitol. "I am trying a bill that will put responsibility for determining school safety for firearms with the school boards," Eklund...

Her topic, "Beef; what's in its...

  • Senior night for wrestlers

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

The home meet for the Burns/Pine Bluffs wrestlers brought the South Bison to the mats Thursday night. Six seniors along with their parents were honored as the evening started. Coach Dan Clayson hoped the match would bring some worthy opposition for the grapplers. Although Burns lost the meet, 52.0 to 23.0, the parents and fans of Burns/Pine Bluffs were happy to see wrestling without driving a long distance. The grapplers traveled to Mitchell Saturday for a meet but no results were available at... Full story

  • Pine Bluffs' road trip ends on a win

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Twenty minutes doesn't add up to a complete basketball game. But three quarters of well-played ball is enough for Coach William Gray to keep moving the Hornets forward. "We were down by 5 halfway through the third against Kimball, and then they hit back-to-back threes," Gray said. "That sequence deflated us a bit and we couldn't recover." A loss is a loss, 78-54, but Gray doesn't look at it as a defeat, saying Kimball was "the best team we will play all season." He was proud of the Hornets and...

  • Lady Broncs sneak two wins in

    Charlene Smith|Feb 6, 2014

Coach Barry Ward and the Lady Broncs are loyal to their school and team against all odds and undefeated teams. Lingle strolled into Burns Friday night with a high level of confidence, expecting a walk to a win. Burns had a game plan in mind carrying their own level of confidence. "It was a great game that was played at a really high level," Ward said. "We had some kids really step up and play...

  • Broncs end week with a win

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Squeezing in practices and keeping a team up during a three-game week can be difficult. Start the week with a loss and it tends to be more difficult. Coach Patterson was pleased with the competition level the first 12 minutes against Wheatland Tuesday afternoon. Burns took the lead for a small portion of the game, but Wheatland put up a fight. "Wheatland went on a 16-1 run to end the half that put the game out of reach," Patterson said. "The kids continued to battle in the second half and...

  • Voice behind the cheer

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

The youngsters left with a new pink shirt and a knowledge of the cheer squad. The South Cheer team conducting the clinic know a little about cheering. They had six All-American cheerleaders last year and claimed back-to-back 4A State Championships. At the end of the clinic, the 50 youths performed a half-time show for...

  • Coyotes loses two

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Coach Tim Brunelle admits it has been a “rough road this year.” Even coaches know sometimes the roughest roads lead to the sweetest views. And Brunelle is hopeful of a nicer reading on the scoreboard. Friday night found the Coyotes in Fleming. Going into the contest Brunelle felt confident that he brought the “better team” to the courts. However Fleming was unrelenting from the beginning of the game. “We struggled to score and turned the ball over too often,” Brunelle said. “It was just not...

  • Lady Hornets stung from double loss last weekend

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Loss is never easy but when it comes in twos, it can knock the wind out of a team’s sails. Coach Lindsey Forbes wanted to be sure to push the Lady Hornets back into the wind and keep moving forward. She said she is still confident in the Lady Hornets, even after a rough week on the road. A loss on Friday to Kimball, 51-40 in a non-conference game, didn’t worry Forbes much. Kimball has depth and size where Pine Bluffs is short on the bench and stature. So the loss was nothing to worry about eve...

  • Pawnee shows some spark

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Pawnee Lady Coyotes have hit some dark spots early in the season. Head coach Samantha Ramos is not only struggling with inexperience but also lack of depth on the bench. Pawnee often overcomes with their uncompromising teamwork and effort. The team packed their gear bag and headed to Fleming Thursday night for a “must-win” league game. Pawnee was defenseless against the Lady Wildcats who almost doubled their average of points per game against the Lady Wildcats. The loss, 58-37, was a dif...

  • Albin Community News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Feb 6, 2014

That little rodent over in Pennsylvania was scared Sunday by his shawdow and went back to sleep for another six weeks. Maybe he was a Broncos fan and predicted a nasty day on the field. It was still a good game to watch, seeing Percy Harvin get to run back a touchdown in a Super Bowl. Something he never would have got to do with the Vikings. Now, on to the madness of basketball for a while. A bit of news from the Albin Elementary halls: Arizona school districts, including the Dysart Unified... Full story

  • The good and bad of silence

    Charlene Smith|Jan 30, 2014

Many of us in Wyoming know what real silence sounds like. There are still places in our county where you can’t even hear the hum of a power line or water pump. Take a stroll down most of our community streets after dark and it is as peaceful as a child resting. Recently, when a child was resting, a tragedy woke him. Through the silence he heard what he had to do. Rescue his family. This is just what the altruistic eight-year-old did in upstate New York. He didn’t hear the danger, he only heard t... Full story

    Charlene Smith|Jan 30, 2014

Pine Bluffs eighth grader Harper Pachel, daughter of Mike and Paula Pachel of Pine Bluffs, sneaks quietly through the hallways of Pine Bluffs High earning solid grades. Harper was nicknamed "Scout" by her parents because they liked 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' The character, not unlike Harper, is unusually intelligent and thoughtful. • Hornets respond to loss

    Charlene Smith|Jan 30, 2014

Traveling 15 miles for most Wyomingites doesn't require preparation and training. The Pine Bluffs Hornets, coming off a strong game against the No. 1 team in their conference, put a lot of effort into their trip up the interstate to face a conference and neighborhood rival. "I thought the game came down to us not making shots," Coach William Gray said. "Coach Patterson had a good game plan, and his kids played well." Pine Bluffs stayed with the Broncs until late in the third quarter when Burns...
