Small communities in close proximity to one another can muddle the lines of loyalty when it comes to conference basketball games. Perhaps a teacher who teaches in one town and coaches in another could have a little anxiety when the rivals meet. Not Coach Lindsey Forbes. She left the anxiety to her students trying to decide to cheer for Burns or Pine Bluffs. A fast-paced game started at the tip off and stayed that way until the last minute when the Lady Hornets won, 41-48. Pine Bluffs doubled up...
An article more than 75 years old circulated the Burns gym Friday night. It invited all basketball fans to the upcoming Burns vs. Pine Bluffs basketball game, but warned fans to keep their guns at home. Fast forward to 2014 and the rivalry is still going strong but with more sportsmanship in the athletes and fans. Wyatt Berg and Cody Leader were perfect from the field while Taylor Kirkbride provided perfection from the line. As if those stats weren't enough, Burns had 14 assists on 15 made...
The difference in the team dynamics may be visible. The Lady Broncs with their trademark team braids while the Lady Hornets straighten their pony tails. But the desire to win against a conference rival is the same no matter what the hair style. Coach Barry Ward was not quiet from the side lines as Burns struggled to keep up with the driving pace Pine Bluffs set early. But the game stayed within reach until late in the fourth quarter. "Why are we hanging onto the ball?," asked Ward as Burns took...
Today is National Croissant Day. A day to knead out your frustrations on some dough, and turn all that effort into a light and flaky melt-in-your-mouth creation that will make you forget why you needed to knead. The croissant has an interesting story, even if it may be legend. In 1683, the bakers of Vienna alerted the army about the Turks who were coming to do battle. The bakers received high honors and thanks for their assistance in defeating the Turks. To celebrate they baked their bread in... Full story

Traveling to Lingle for the Dogger Invitational, Burns/Pine Bluffs wrestlers were fixated, not on losing weight but gaining, through the gift of medals. Coming off many injuries Coach Dan Clayson was satisfied just to have the varsity squad competing on the mats in winning fashion. Cecil Brockman continued his quest for state by bringing home a few extra ounces, as he took first place in the 182 pound division. Brockman Shoshoni bettered the other 17 teams with 166 points, Saratoga placed...
An understated young man walks tall down the Pawnee High School halls. Trent Timm, son of Scott and Stephanie Timm, not only has athletic ability and academic discipline, but also a quiet charm that doesn't let anyone be forgotten. "The biggest difference about being a senior is you are expected to score more," Trent says referring to the stress of last year of high school. Trent wears the black and red for Pawnee during every sports season; football, basketball and baseball. Football, however,...
Home court advantage couldn't mask the task at hand for the Pine Bluffs Hornets. They faced the top ranked Guernsey Vikings. And into the fight they marched, catching the Vikings off guard and collecting on good ball maintenance and an effective Hornet defense. "They are a good team, with two effective guards and a big man inside," Coach William Gray said. "The kids did a much better job of taking care of the basketball."The Hornets won 46-42. On Saturday, the Hornets traveled to meet the force...
Most basketball teams train in endurance. Along side the drills and running plays, players run to stay in shape and build endurance for one game. Burns training led them to endure three games in one week and end with added experience and a win. Coach Sean Patterson said even though the Mitchell game didn't mean anything for the conference rating, he still wanted a win. "We did not rotate well enough defensively in the first quarter and they made us pay" Patterson said. "We did a much better job...
"When we are behind we need to shoot the ball. Don't foul and score some points," Coach Barry Ward instructed the Lady Broncs late in the game Tuesday against Mitchell. The team listened and beat the Lady Tigers 48-44. "We scored just enough to beat them," Ward said. However, the Lady Broncs weren't done listening to Ward and performed at a winning level. Friday night lead to Lusk where Burns slipped by 43-36. Rylee Anderson and Jessica Malm were perfect from the floor and Malm adding a 3-point...
Coach Tim Brunelle remains happy with the Pawnee Coyotes growth through this season. Even though it comes at the cost of more losses. The Coyotes traveled to Arickaree Thursday to meet strong shots from its opponent early. "Arickaree came out strong and hit shots early, while on the other hand, we struggled to score," Brunelle said. "But once again I was happy with our effort. We just need to make shots, and take care of the ball better at times." Pawnee lost, 67-44. Stand out player of the game...
Mid season run for the Burns/Pine Bluffs wrestling squad should be a time when they are hitting their tactical style preferences, not the therapeutic pool. Coach Dan Clayson is concerned with the amount of injuries the team is recovering from but is still quietly confident in the six weeks of action coming before regionals. “We have been dealing with the injury bug the last couple of weeks, so we have been down a little bit,” Clayson said. “We did fairly well at the Don Runner, and the kids...

I have a simple dream. Someday I will cook for people who do not share the same DNA as I do and they will think it is yummy. They will pay me. They will come back again and again and I will make enough money to buy without worrying the cost. I have a dream. Dreams are simple. You think something, draft a plan in your head, maybe tell some close friends about it. Sometimes it stops there. Sometimes it changes the world. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream and he didn't let anything stop him until... Full story
The wind continues to blow. No, really. I thought this weekend we would come out from behind the wind break but we just got more wind to break through. Advice for the week; don’t spit into the wind. Those pesky tumbleweeds are more than an eye sore. They can cause fires and block roads. Try to take care of the ones that whirl your way. Our condolences go out to Jason and Jillian McLaughlin as they mourn the loss of her aunt in South Dakota. Loss is never easy, especially when it is unexpected a... Full story

The Wyoming Wheat Growers Association (WWGA) held its annual meeting in Albin Jan. 7. Topics of the meeting included ideas on improving production, as well as optional crop rotations. Among the 38 producers attending the day-long meeting were many farmers from Laramie County. In Laramie County, winter wheat producers top the production rate for Wyoming. However, the winter wheat market is not as strong as it has been in the past which concerns most growers. Drought is one of the main reasons...
Have you heard the story about the Baptist minister, Catholic priest and Lutheran pastor who go fishing together? I had better prefix this by saying I am a Lutheran. Thereby casting away any notion of an inappropriate story, just a light hearted story. They get hungry and the Baptist minister says, “Oh, the ladies group made us a nice lunch, let me go get it.” He jumps out of the boat, walks across the water to his truck, grabs the lunch bag and returns across the water. A little while lat... Full story

Malli, daughter of Ryan and Tracy O'Neal, is as solid in athleticism as she is in courtesy. She participates in volleyball, basketball, rodeo and track. Malli looks forward to running sprints for the track team this spring. "I would like to try the pole...
Joy can come in something as simple as a warm cinnamon roll, or an information pamphlet. Two Pine Bluffs residents have taken it upon themselves to deliver this joy in those small packages. Community members Lynda Sanders and Alice Theobald have delivered more than 25 packages containing everything from helpful information about Pine Bluffs to coffee mugs to gift certificates and yes, even cinnamon rolls, to those who have recently moved to Pine Bluffs. Coach Sean Patterson was not quiet with his pride of the Burns Broncs. "We had a great weekend," Patterson said. "On Friday night we played some of our best basketball of the season. The first two quarters against Saratoga was great team basketball." Moving into the heart of its season, the Broncs are starting to come together on both sides of the ball. Burns was able to force turnovers and get all five on the floor into offensive scoring action. Defense was just as fine-tuned and the Broncs...
In a scrappy game against the determined Saratoga Lady Panthers, Burns threw the last punch and won 70-51 Friday night in Burns. Through all the nudging and pushing, Burns traveled down the court and scored effectively as well as executing their defense efficiently, keeping Saratoga's scoring low until the fourth quarter. Riding high on the victory, Burns landed in Lingle on Saturday for the second game of the weekend. However the win from the previous night couldn't help them on the court the n...
Home court advantage for the Lady Hornets Friday night didn't nudge Pine Bluffs over Kimball. "We did not play lady hornet defense that night," Coach Lindsey Forbes said. "We sent Kimball to the line 33 times. They were 19 of 33. That can't happen." Offensively, Pine Bluffs struggled to score inside the paint and lost to Kimball 43-51. Saturday had the Lady Hornets welcoming Lusk to their Hornet hive. Pine Bluffs, coming off a difficult loss so soon showed up to play. The 45-35 win left the Lady...
