Burns Pine Bluffs wrestling team participated in the Shane Shatto Memorial Wrestling Tournament in Douglas Friday and Saturday but came home empty handed. • Defense isn't enough for a win

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 16, 2014

The Lady Coyotes hosted their first home game of the new year Friday evening and hoped for a win. However, the Fleming Lady Wildcats gave them a tough dog-and-cat battle. Seniors Afton Zitek and Emily Ellis rallied their team but after posting five fouls a piece, they sat alongside Katie Klinginsmith and watched the loss from the bench. Fundamental mistakes such as traveling and double dribble calls tripped the Lady Coyotes into a difficult loss. However, Pawnee showed courage and determination...

The project, when completed, will add extra space on the north side of the existing community center in Albin. The addition will include...

  • Albin community news

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Jan 16, 2014

The weather, for January, isn't really that bad. Sure, it's cold. And the driveway drifts shut every afternoon. But those warm mild days are really nice and make the in-between days brr-able, I mean bearable. The Smith family received a pretty cool gift bag filled with sweets, treats and movies from Cody and Shawnae Branigan and family. It was such a nice surprise and was consumed and watched immediately. Thank you, Branigans! The Wyoming Wheat Growers Association met at the Albin Community... Full story

  • Family wins; Senate campaign ends

    Charlene Smith|Jan 9, 2014

In a family-driven state like Wyoming, it is not unheard of for someone to step back from their work to care for family. Even more understandable for a mother to care for an ill child. So when Wyoming Republican Senate candidate Liz Cheney cited “serious health issues” in her family, at face value, it seemed the right “Wyoming” thing to do. Since Sunday evening when the story broke, no more information has been released on the illness or the family member that prompted such a decisive and pos...

  • Broncs score a win

    Charlene Smith|Jan 9, 2014

The bus ride up to Yoder must have been a smooth one Saturday morning for the Burns Broncs. When they took the floor against the Southeast Cyclones, the only wind that was howling was outside the doors. "We loved the effort and defensive intensity that the kids played with the whole game Saturday," Coach Sean Patterson said. "We came out prepared to compete and were able to create some turnovers." Patterson's enthusiasm for the game was not undeserving as he witnessed 10 players score. The...

  • Lady Broncs start year with a battle

    Charlene Smith|Jan 9, 2014

The Lady Broncs brought experience, preparation and confidence to Yoder for its first conference game of the new year Saturday afternoon. However, winning didn’t come out of the bag they packed for the Southeast Lady Cyclones. “The game was very physical,” Coach Barry Ward said. “We just didn’t execute on offense well enough to win the game.” In the first half, Burns played both sides of the ball well and pulled ahead of Southeast by two. The second half held less net time for the Lady Broncs...

    Charlene Smith|Jan 9, 2014

The Burns/Pine Bluffs wrestling squad traveled to Cheyenne South for a dual tournament Friday, and the Bison Bonanza on Saturday returning with third place. “We struggled a little bit on Friday, and went 1-3 in the duals,” Coach Dan Clayson said. But the squad came back during the Bison Bonanza and competed well. “We wrestled really well on Saturday, and ended up finishing third,” Clayson said. Senior Cecil Brockman continued on path to state by placing first at South in the 182-pound bracket...

  • Weather frightful, carbs delightful

    Charlene Smith|Jan 9, 2014

Know what makes a body warm even on the coldest of days? Besides a trip to the Bahamas. Carbs. Or more specific, the burning of carbohydrates in our system. Carbs are not friends to those wanting to shed extra weight, but carbohydrates provide fuel for the body, and warm or cold, bodies need fuel to function. Fuel for the human body takes three basic forms; carbohydrates or sugar, protein, and fat. We are capable of burning all three of these fuels, but do so at different times, rates, and...

  • Just darn bad luck

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 2, 2014

Christmas is such a wonderful holiday. Most of us get to spend a little time with family and loved ones. We get to step out of the daily life of stress, reality of debt, sickness, and hardships and sit for a while in the warm room of happiness, joy and love. Sometimes, fate leaves the door open to that beautiful room and reality slips in like smoke leaves the chimney. The reality is no room or family is immune to bad luck, during Christmas or any other day for that matter. Life can sure be...

  • Student of the Week: Alison Mickelson

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 2, 2014

Directing a play, at any age can be a challenge. However, Alison Mickelson, a sixth grader at Pine Bluffs Elementary School, handled the task of directing the Christmas play with patience and a smile. "The auditions took about 30 minutes and we had someone for each part," Alison said. Alison wanted to direct the play and Mrs. Duffy told her to write a letter explaining what she wanted to do. "I got really busy and didn't get time to write the letter," Alison said. "But Mrs. Duffy still let me...

  • Winning experience from a game lost

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 2, 2014

Burns lost to Gering 56 – 41 in a rough and tough battle on both ends of the court in their last game before breaking for the Christmas holiday, Dec. 20. The Broncs played a strong game in between the elbows and pushed up and down the home hardwood. "We were proud of the way the boys came out and competed against a very good Gering team," Head Coach Sean Patterson said. "We did a better job of being aggressive on offense and playing team basketball." Patterson was happy with the experiences t...

  • Burns show backbone against Gering

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 2, 2014

Head Coach Barry Ward took a few steps onto the court Dec. 20 and yelled down at the Lady Broncs, "How many chances do we need? One!" The Lady Broncs got more than one chance to beat the Gering Lady Bulldogs but never collected for the win, losing 49-47. With less than 2 minutes left, Bri Bocox had a foul called her way, and sunk a free throw to pull the Lady Broncs within 2. In the final minute of the game, Burns had the ball under their basket, but couldn't put it up through the net. "The...

  • Nine ladies dancing through your kitchen

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 2, 2014

If your kitchen is as small as mine, nine ladies sitting let alone dancing might mean many bruised toes. Fortunately for the little piggies, I am not talking about bringing nine ladies to your kitchen to show off the latest cha-cha. Today is the ninth day of Christmas. The twelve days following Christmas Eve constitute the twelve days in Christianity. The carol is French in origin and first published in 1780. However, it was the English version by Frederic Austin that engrained the folk melody... Full story

  • Stones and life preservers both cause ripples

    Charlene Smith|Dec 26, 2013

Have you ever experienced something so beautiful it made you cry? Could have been a simple act of kindness or seeing a loved one after a long separation. Or perhaps hearing voices sing so sweetly you think you have gone celestial. This time of the year, there are many moments that bring the joyful tears to my eyes. Anytime I hear “Silent Night,” a choir hitting all the right notes in a Christmas program, and little children shyly talking to Santa Claus, I empty the tear bank. I am no cream puf... Full story

  • Santa Claus lights up Hillsdale

    Charlene Smith|Dec 26, 2013

Santa Claus rode down the main street in Hillsdale Dec. 14 in a float loaded with little boys and girls who were smiling brighter than the lights strung on the float. The Hillsdale Christmas Parade is a lighted affair with area 4-H groups and community members decorating trailers and even themselves with lights. After the parade, the United Methodist Church hosted a chili feed. More than 150 people had dinner and donated to the free will donation. The donations will benefit two families in the...

  • Comfort food to serve prodigal family

    Charlene Smith|Dec 26, 2013

Although family members living at home won’t put it at the top of their list, those familiar faces that you only get to see during the holidays usually miss terribly their favorite foods prepared by family hands. Even college students and young adults out on their own come home not only to see family but to taste the distinct flavor of home. They might get pancakes in the hash line or at the corner cafe, but not with a dash of vanilla, buttermilk and cinnamon. And those souls connected to us by... Full story

  • Hornets' youthful edge cuts in Burns' Classic

    Charlene Smith|Dec 19, 2013

Head Coach Will Gray knows the strength of the Pine Bluffs boys' basketball team is also its weakness - youth. The Hornets went into the Winter Classic hosted by Burns knowing it could keep up with the pace of the other teams, but unsure if it could score against more experienced teams. That question was answered as the Hornets ended the classic 1-2. "This weekend was very up and down for us," Gray said. "As young as we are, we expect some roller coasters, but we have to control how we handle...

  • Broncs play competitive hosts for Winter Classic

    Charlene Smith|Dec 19, 2013

Burns Broncs Head Coach Sean Patterson didn't let his team play doormat to the visiting teams at the Winter Classic hosted in Burns over the weekend. The Broncs had a brutal match against Shoshoni Friday evening in their second match.
