Sabrina Matthews has served burgers, pizza, pancakes and even desserts to Burns residents, students and people traveling through for over four years inside a refurbished room off the old Burns elementary school gym that is now the Town of Burns building. But that service may come to an end Dec. 31. “I just can’t justify raising my prices to pay rent,” Matthews explained. “I’m already close to the prices on the interstate and people won’t pay more when they have to travel two miles to get here... What brings you peace of mind? For a former Pine Bluffs graduate and lifelong Wyoming resident, it is serving others in a country far away. Logan Armstrong, son of Brenda and Jeff Armstrong of Pine Bluffs and grandson of Don and Marge Sabin of Sidney, joined the Peace Corps for many more reasons than that. “It is an opportunity of a lifetime that, once I heard about it, I couldn’t pass up,” smiled Logan. “It is the thrill of an adventure in another country; a fodder for personal growth, an oppo...
Monday was Columbus Day. On my way to work, the deejay asked what people thought about celebrating a holiday whose premise has been dis-proven. Oh, Columbus did sail the ocean blue and he did prove that the world was round and not flat. Sometimes people forget the pieces of truth when trying to get their truth heard. But Columbus wasn’t the first one to America. Native Americans and almost the entire state of South Dakota celebrates Native American Day on the second Monday in October. And, as ge...

Coach Will Gray sees through the adversity of this season to the future. As the winless Hornets continue their slide to the bottom of their conference, Gray is watching for areas to work on next year. “We have many fundamentals to work on from now until next fall,” Gray said with a hope only someone who works with young athletes can have after the mudslide of a season Pine Bluffs is experiencing. The Lingle game showed Gray the team had a little fight left in them. “Things seemed to snowb...

Berg would have another short run in to the end zone late in the fourth quarter. The big play of the night came from Heward with a 90 yard touchdow...

Now you see Albin neighbors, now you don’t. A bunch of us were at the Magic Show Thursday evening. And what a show it was. Rumor had it Cody and Shawnae Branigan and family saw this act in Custer last summer and talked them in to coming down to do a show for the Albin Parent Group. Very nice. And although I didn’t make it in time for pancakes, I hear those disappeared as quick as a rabbit in a magicians hat. Thank you to the Albin Parent Group for making it happen. At the end of the show, Jil...

Have you ever read Aesop's fable about the farmer going out to check on his hens and emotionally yelling when he found a weasel there. The weasel exclaimed, “I wasn't doing anything wrong, just walking by.” The farmer gets yelled at by his wife for riling the dog who woke the baby. And on the story goes, never resting blame on the original source; the weasel who was intending harm yet walked away with no punishment. Isn't that often the case in life. Someone causes a ruckus and stirs doubt, gui...
A tall, quiet thin young man sits across from me as I interviewed the Athlete of the Week, Nolan Brooks. The Burns junior/senior high seventh grader is running for his character and on a large heart of an athlete. Cross country coach Cole Manlove sees it on the grassy fields of the cross country meets every week. “Nolan is a wonderful young man and Dustin (Lee) and I love having him in the program,” said Manlove. “Nolan is a reminder to me that sports isn’t always about winning but really,...
