Homecoming is about the former students coming home to visit, the current seniors being honored and maybe a little about the hero athletes conquering a win against the enemy. Both teams were lifted to a win from the pep rally given by the school and the fans in the stands. The pep rally brought back a time honored tradition. After Emily Ellis welcomed everyone, and athletic director Kathy Adams announced the senior class won the hallway decoration contest with their Batman front hall decor, the... Full story
Alice Theobald and Lynda Sanders want people to know that Pine Bluffs is striving to be the “friendliest little community in the area,” and have started the Welcome Wagon to prove it. The concept began many years ago when the Pine Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce began welcoming new residents with a list of businesses in the community and greeted them with friendship and warmth. But after the group dissolved, so did the program. “We just want to help our newcomers with information about our t...
The kids and I looked at a house for sale in Burns. It has potential for us to be closer to school and work. Not that we don’t love our neighbors and friends in Albin, but life would be more convenient and less money would be spent on fuel if we lived in Burns. Physics 101: The closer you are to the object in motion, the less energy you will spend catching it. The house in question is a “fixer upper.” Or maybe it would be better to call it a “tear it down before it falls down.” Not many peop...
Apples and blackberries are abundant in October. But only because of your gentle care throughout the growing season. You may have babied the apple tree, shoeing away the squirrels and rabbits looking for a sweet treat. Maybe you lovenly covered it with a sheet when that late snow came in May. Well, all that paid off and your neighbors and family members are looking forward to tasting your efforts. Apple flavor complements berries perfectly. I am always afraid the crunch and tart of apples will...
The Pawnee Coyotes needed a win, not only for the Homecoming crowd on the sidelines and their own spirits, but to keep their season alive. Coach Doug Miller told the team at the pep rally Thursday afternoon that even though the team was 0-4, the Coyotes were playing “at the same level” as the other teams and had played close games. “It would be sweet to get a win,” Miller said at the rally. And win they did, 50-33 over Weldon Valley. The game had many penalties for both teams. At one point,...
The Lady Coyotes began the Homecoming festivities with an exciting win over Weldon Valley Friday night. Senior Emily Ellis was proud of her team for improving their problem areas. “We get really tired in the second set, usually,” Ellis said. “But tonight we stayed strong through our weakest set. It was a lot of fun tonight.” The Lady Coyotes not only had fun but showed how an “iron man” volleyball team can out-serve, out-dig and outlast a team whose roster numbers into the 30’s. They beat the...
With a heavily scheduled play week, the Lady Broncs came out with the marks landing in the win column. Early last week, the Lady Broncs welcomed the Lady Hornets onto their court and executed a win in three sets. The front blocking and kills delivered by Burns left the Lady Hornets feeling stung. On Friday, Burns traveled to Lusk and once again made short time of delivering a win against the Lady Tigers. And rounding out a long week of play, the team traveled to Potter-Dix Saturday for a...
The win/loss column of high school sports doesn’t always match up to what was gained. The Lady Hornets fell to 4-10 overall on the season after losing to Burns early last week 8-25, 7-25, 18-25 and took only one win away from the Potter/Dix Invitational against Glendo, 25-12, 25-14, and lost to Leyton and Burns. But those losses won the Lady Hornets confidence in themselves and their team. “We played Burns Tuesday night and lost which made us 2-3 in conference play,” head coach Christina Nusba...
Pine Bluffs Hornets traveled the distance to Shoshoni and lost in a non-league game, 26-0. This leaves the Hornets 0-3 on the year, still struggling to find their footing before their season is mathematically over. The Hornets will host the Lusk Tigers Friday night in their Homecoming match-up. Lusk comes into the game 4-0 and not looking to give up a loss easily. Game Stats Passing Marquice Rivers ¼ for 30 Receiving Taylor Haug 1 for 30 Rushing Harvey De La Cruz 3 for 12, Preston Thurin 16...
Burns Broncs traveled to Newcastle last Friday on the momentum of a winning season. The long bus ride didn’t deter the boys from coming out and limiting the tough and well coached Dogies to 19 points. Noah Taylor and Mikky Heward both had interceptions during the contest. Heward also came up with a take-away from a Dogies receiver and ran it back for a big gain. The Broncs were subject to some original lineups from the Dogies special teams and offense. At one point, the offense had two “quarterb...
The little league football teams from Pine Bluffs and Burns celebrated victories Saturday afternoon in Torrington after playing two different teams in the Torrington league. After a few years in the Cheyenne YMCA league, both teams joined the Torrington league this year after their coaches opted to move the teams. Last weekend wins were the first for both squads in the new league. All of the games are played in Torrington, except the match-up between Pine Bluffs and Burns. They will go head to...
October is here. Pumpkins are coming out, the colors are changing, and my candy dish is just about empty from Easter goodies. Must be getting close to Halloween. “Oh, Oh, Oh, it’s magic, you know it.” Or maybe it’s just a show. Either way, come and be amazed as the Albin parent group along with Albin elementary hosts a MAGIC show. And it’s FREE! Just one of the ways Albin stays amazing; great volunteers who keep us entertained. The Magic Show will be held at Albin elementary, Thursday,...

The Pine Bluffs Hornets took the field Friday night after working on fundamentals after their previous two losses. “We were not fundamentally sound up front and they took advantage of it,” explained coach Will Gray. Southeast came in looking for a win after losing their first two contests. But even though they had not posted a mark in the win column, the Hornets knew it wouldn’t be easy to outrun them. “We knew we had stop the run, and we didn’t accomplish that,” Gray said. “Southeast...
The Lady Hornets were without a key player on the court Thursday night. Andrea Baker received a kidney donation Sept. 12 and will be out the rest of the season. “Andrea Baker, our all-conference middle hitter, received a kidney transplant last Thursday in Denver and so we are looking to all of our girls to step up and fill that void,”explained coach Christina Nusbaum. But Kimball proved to be too much for the team to overcome. The Lady Hornets lost in three sets, 21-25, 12-25, 13-25. “Ki...
Head coach Marv Mirich was questioned by cross country coach Cole Manlove at the Burns homecoming pep rally Friday afternoon on how he felt about the first home game that night against Big Horn. “Nervous,” said the perennial word-shy coach. Manlove went on to say that he had heard Mirich had the toilet paper removed from the visitors locker room. Mirich, although not claiming truth or responsibility to the statement said, “whatever helps us win.” And win they did, 34-19 against a very large a...

Mustangs carried the Bronc royalty through the parade Friday afternoon. Royalty for Burns homecoming was Queen Winnie Hunter and King Cecil Brockman. The newest member of the coaching staff, Emma Patterson, baby girl of Sean and Christina Patterson, was decked out to cheer on the Broncs. The elementary students showed their team colors and were excited to meet the players at the parade. The senior girls got “Back in Black” for the parade. And before the festivities Friday, there was a bon...

The volunteers helped the homeowners caulk around the windows and doors, install carbon monoxide monitors, and plant bushes and trees. Some interior cleaning as well as outside trimming was completed before the volunteers enjoyed lunch sponsored by Texas Roadhouse of...

With all this rain, puddles the debt of swimming pools, our neighbors to the south evacuated from their homes and unable to flush their toilets, and farmers wondering what was worse, drought or floods, I felt it was time to wring out a little laugh. Dry up some of the hurt and pain with a few tears released from the bucket of laughter. And what better way to work the giggle muscle than to laugh at someone else’s fallible experience. In this story, and due to the shear magnitude of us needing a...
