  • Albin council takes care of business

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 19, 2013

The Albin council met Thursday evening and tackled their agenda in just under an hour. After the meeting was called to order, the council reviewed the progress of the lunch program. Mayor Kelly Krakow asked why some meals were more expensive than others, especially the ham. Lunch program director Michelle Childers said when the meal cost had to be divided between a small number of guests the cost will go up. Childers added ham was always a higher price meal no matter how many they served. In oth...

  • Albin News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Sep 19, 2013

Can you believe we had over five inches of rain in about seven days? Some areas west of Albin received as much as 10” of rain! I guess that might be called a “genuine drought buster,” or so Monte says. The moisture went down as far as 36” according to local moisture probes. Some reports are saying “too little too late.” But I like to think that anytime you are given what you asked for, you should be thankful. Even if it is a spoon after the ice cream has been passed. You still made it to desse...

  • 'Holy Butterscotch, Batman' Day

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 19, 2013

If you read me every week, which I thank you for that, you know I mentioned the goto favorite family potluck dessert recipe. I found a chocolate version of my butterscotch hit on the internet called a “moon cake.” I substitute butterscotch for the chocolate because I have a good friend in Albin who, dare I say this out loud, hates chocolate. Yes, my friends, I welcome all as friends; democrats, Texas fans, but more importantly, I have taken someone offended by chocolate and love her with all...

A set of holding tanks nine miles north of Burns and owned by Wolfman Energy were struck by lightning Friday afternoon. fifty-six vehicles, 35 of them fire fighting related, responded to the mutual aid call from Laramie County Fire District No. 6 which was first to respond. The 8,500 storage tanks were hit by lightning around 5:30 p.m. LCFD 6 firefighter Riley McNamar said he began receiving phone calls about 5:30 p.m. of a prairie fire and a structural fire in the area. “I got about 100 c...

Pine Bluffs police chief Robin Clark welcomed close to 20 active business owners and community members to a networking event at the Historic High School in Pine Bluffs Thursday evening. “This is the first time I believe the police department has networked with the community, but I hope it turns into a yearly event,” said Clark. • Passion, promises and football

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 12, 2013

There are not many things that I get passionate about. Okay, you’re right. If you’ve met me, you know I have a high level of energy and come off as very passionate. But usually it’s just excitement to see you, to talk to you, to be alive. But true passion for me only happens on certain issues. I, like everyone else, want wars to end, poverty, hunger and child abuse to stop and someone to find a cure for cancer. However, I hate divorce. I hate people breaking their promises. And I hate adult...

  • A little leak leads to no water

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 12, 2013

Albin residents realized the importance of water in their life Tuesday evening, Sept. 3, after Aaron Anderson, the town maintenance man had to shut off the water supply due to a leak. The leak began in Chris Beckman’s basement, but in order to find a shut-off for the Beckman house, Anderson had to “go digging.” He ran into a water line but was unable to shut off just the block since there was no alternative shut-off valve. The town’s water was shut off in the early evening. Anderson and council...

  • Dispatch still heavy on council's agenda

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 12, 2013

After a brief public hearing Tuesday, Sept. 3, for the renewal of the three liquor licenses in town, the Pine Bluffs town council started working through their agenda. Mayor Bill Shain talked to the council about the “growing pains” that were going on with the Memorandum of Understanding with the communication center in Cheyenne to take over Pine Bluffs dispatching. Town attorney Alex Davison explained to the board the state statute that he worked on with the Wyoming Association of Mun...

  • 'To the moon'

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 12, 2013

September 19, 2013 is the Moon festival or Mid-Autumn festival. Every year on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar (September), the moon is at its maximum brightness for the entire year. And that is good enough to start a tradition. The Chinese celebrate “zhong qiu jie.” Children are told the story of the moon fairy living in a crystal palace, who comes out to dance on the moon’s shadowed surface. The legend surrounding the “lady living in the moon” dates back to ancien...

  • A new way in to Carpenter elementary

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 12, 2013

Just days into the process, the Carpenter elementary'svestibule already looked different. Carpenter principal Laurie Bahl said the workers got a lot done the first week. “We like these guys and just might keep them around,” smiled Bahl. The work is estimated to take about six weeks. When completed, principal Bahl’s office will be moved up front with windows to see the entryway, the counselor will be moved to her office, the secretary will have a new office where part of the library was, and t...

  • Wheat in, planting moving forward

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 5, 2013

Pine Bluffs Feed and Grain is reporting the wheat harvest for this region is complete. Although the quantity wasn’t outstanding, the quality was good if not better than other local regions. Pine Bluffs Feed and Grain employee Jessica Fornstrom said most bushels had a good test weight between 59 and 62, “and some were even better than that.” Protein averaged between 12 and 16 with 5-15 bushels per acre yield for most farmers through the local elevator. Harvest was slowed this year by the rain. “W...

  • A 'Little Good News'

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 5, 2013

Remember that old tune from Anne Murray, “Little Good News?” Back in 1983 it hit the number one spot on the country charts and was in the top 50 of the pop chart way before cross-over music was as common as reality shows. The lyrics talked about fighting in Lebanon, bad economy, and “one more sad story's one more than I can stand.” The song goes on to say how she would like to have the papers say “not much to print today, can't find nothin' bad to say.” I started in the print business a...

  • Cowboy tough in Nebraska

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 5, 2013

From the look around the 91,000 plus football fans at Memorial Stadium, only a thousand or so boasted the Brown and Gold for the Cowboys. Wyoming came into the game a heavy underdog against the No. 18 Huskers, but showed up to be Cowboy tough and “Never Quit.” After scoring first, the Cowboy’s defense began taking dominant steps to slow down Nebraska’s offense. But when the Huskers scored, and a few calls were questionable, even by the fans in red, Wyoming was undaunted. After 602 total offensi...

  • Squash dinner with zucchini

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Sep 5, 2013

What can you use in cakes, salads, breads, side dishes, main dishes, and face peels but yet everyone wants to give it away this time of year? Zucchini of course! The kids’ great-grandma Smith used to say Windex was good for everything. Great-grandma Brown thought dryer sheets could fix anything. Well, I am here to say, zucchini can fix any meal, no matter what you’re craving. This miracle squash is so easy to grow, you can easily end up with a bumper crop. But don’t let it go to waste. Skin...

  • Albin News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Sep 5, 2013

Do you enjoy seeing the sunflower fields follow the sun as much as I do? I don’t know how much profit the farmer gets out of those fields of moving yellow, but I truly enjoy driving or biking by them. It sounds like a cold winter is coming, so soak in that warm yellow sight as much as you can so the Indian summer can keep you warm through the frigid months. Jillian tells me soccer and volleyball registrations are continuing. She would like you to volunteer to coach, ref, or just help out with t...

  • Youth walked away from danger

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 29, 2013

A white male, approximately 5’7” in height wearing a ball cap and clean shaven approached a 16-year-old boy in an alley in Pine Bluffs Tuesday evening about 10 p.m. The man asked the boy when school started and then asked the child to perform oral sex. The boy said no and walked away. He told his mother what happened. She called the police who immediately responded and put out a BOL (be on the lookout) for the man. Pine Bluffs Police Department chief Robin Clark said they responded imm...

  • The heartbeat of a winner

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 29, 2013

My youngest son asked me over breakfast earlier this week if Wyoming had a chance of winning Saturday against Nebraska. I said there is always a chance but Nebraska is just tougher than Wyoming. He asked why. As I explained Division I football programs, the money and all the little boys dreaming of playing for top 25 teams, I wondered if all that mattered. Was it possible for Wyoming to win against an unbeatable opponent? Possible, however, not probable. For the past couple of weeks, I have...

  • Cowboys drop in to a sea of red

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 29, 2013

I never would have thought living in Wyoming, being raised a Cornhusker, and having my oldest call University of Wyoming Alma Mater would have ever caused a dilemma on a college football game day. But it has, twice in two years. In 2011, many of our Nebraska family and friends ventured up 7,250 feet to see the Cowboys compete but ultimately lose to the dominant top 25 team. Fast forward two years later, when our quarterback has had some “seasoning,” and the Cowboys travel down close to sea lev... Full story

The Wyoming Cowboys football squad traveled over the pass to Cheyenne Central high for a scrimmage Saturday afternoon. Amid the cheerleaders and free hot dogs and drinks was a buzz about the upcoming season opener against Nebraska Aug. 31. Brett Smith led many successful plays to the end zone to dust off the high hopes of the fans in attendance for the 2014 season....

  • Albin News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Aug 29, 2013

Well, all is quiet in our little home town. Children have returned to school, harvest is slowly wrapping up, and we are falling quietly into autumn. Soccer and volleyball registration forms should be in your students back packs this week. Contact the community center for more information. I know they are in need of coaches for soccer. Remember the community center offers memberships at reasonable rates when you miss swimming and getting the outdoor summer exercise. We are blessed with an indoor...

  • It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 22, 2013

Mixed in the air along with the laughter and scent of grilled hamburgers was a feeling of hometown at the City Park grand opening Sunday afternoon. About 100 people enjoyed the festivities sponsored by the Pine Bluffs Fire Department. There was a climbing slide for the kids and a dunk tank with the police department taking a dip whenever a ball connected with the target. If the hot dogs, hamburgers and corn on the cob didn’t fill up the guests, the Pine Bluffs recreation department had free c...
