  • Out with the old ... in with the new

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 22, 2013

Thanks to Cheyenne Light Fuel and Power, the Pine Bluffs Senior Center members and friends will be walking on new carpet purchased and installed by Kaiser Corp Floor Covering & Tile Company. “I was looking for a grant and noticed Cheyenne Light had a community betterment grant available,” senior center director Angie Robertson explained. “I completed the forms and they called me the next day saying they would have the board consider our application.” Along with the donation of $6,359 from CL...

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 22, 2013

Laramie County Combined Communications director Glen Crumpton spoke at the Pine Bluffs council Monday evening about the possible Memorandum of Understanding between Pine Bluffs and the center to cover dispatch for the town. “The center receives $900,000 each year from the 911 charge on everyone’s telephone bill,” explained Crumpton. “The center’s budget is estimated at $2.2 million if we are fully staffed and the City of Cheyenne and Laramie County each pay half of that.” The council had... Full story

  • What you can't eat won't kill you

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 22, 2013

Have you ever been “advised” or scolded about eating or drinking something you “shouldn’t?” Until a week ago, I was as free and willing with my intake of food as a dam door opening up after a heavy downpour allowing water to flow past. Anything, as long as it tasted good, was welcomed on my plate. However, due to age, genetics and too many years of leaving the “dam door” open, my doctor is advising me to “make some lifestyle changes.” Which means quit eating what you love. But does it? There ar...

  • Diggin' into some history

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 22, 2013

Mix together some ice cream with all the toppings, a Percheron horse named Mick with a trailer, and the Texas Trail Museum, you get an enjoyable end to the Laramie County Library summer reading program. While Burns and the main branch also celebrated with ice cream, Pine Bluffs branch went all out to entertain their summer readers. Over 300 bookworms signed up locally for the program that offered incentives for reading. Mick stole the show with his massive presence, and owner Julie Bostwick...

  • Chances are, pretty good ... you'll say goodbye more often than you want to

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 15, 2013

There is a guy in Florida that has been bitten by a shark, struck by lightning, bit by a rattle snake and head punched by monkeys, twice, and lived to tell about it. Fate must have it in for this guy. He isn’t an explorer or an adventurer. His run-ins with the bad chances date back to when he was 10, when lightning struck the tree he was standing under. He escaped unhurt but a bit blown over. Taking chances can blow you over, sometimes in a good way. Isn’t the rule of thumb, and there is onl...

  • School board hits curriculum again

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 15, 2013

The Laramie County School District No. 2 board of trustees met Monday evening in Burns and took one step closer to getting the district ready for the school year. The board approved the math curriculum offered as well as the English Language Arts curriculum after much discussion. The talk centered around vocabulary and setting expectations too high for some students. Pine Bluffs elementary principal Sue Stevens explained if certain “language” was going to be standard on the assessment exa...

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 15, 2013

A public hearing was held at the Laramie County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Aug. 6, on the Business Ready Community Program grant submission for the new clinic in Pine Bluffs. Cheyenne Regional Medical Center foundation director Steve Stone explained the process and timeline for the building. “The clinic that Pine Bluffs has has been operating since 1959 and is old and dilapidated,” Stone said. “The foundation has committed $250,000 and the hospital will also give $50,000 to the proje...

  • Albin accepted backhoe bid

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 15, 2013

The Albin Town Council opened two sealed bids for the backhoe Thursday evening at their monthly meeting. The winning bid came from Kirk Steiner for $20,600. The other bid was considerably less at $17,103. The council heard from Teneta Anderson who had been volunteering with the lunch program the past week to collect information to help with the costs of the program. “Labor costs about $75.50 per day when you add in the shopping time over the course of the week,” explained Anderson. “The progr...

Watch what you wish for, huh. We can almost set our clocks by the rain or thunderstorms that come almost every day at 3 p.m. I tried to mow the lawn last weekend and it was more like cutting water than grass. What’s good for the green is not always good for the harvesting machine. Many farmers are patiently waiting to get in some fields and harvest. Here’s hoping the weather pattern turns a bit more dry for them to finish. The lunch program will host a community Sunday lunch Aug. 25, from 11:...

  • The tender part of my foot

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 8, 2013

As I was rushing to work this morning, I took a few minutes to bedazzle the toes. Just a quick trim, a few clips and a nice coat of pink cotton candy. Not much, but sure made me feel better and worthy of wearing flip-flops to work. I think any store that sells open toe shoes to women should give a free pedicure. Just one. Then the ladies who never had their feet pampered and looking like jewels shimmering on the dirty path of life, can experience beauty for their most used extremity. Podiatry...

  • Council shows appreciation

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 8, 2013

Councilman Mike Ragsdale stood in as mayor pro tem for the absent Bill Shain at Monday nights Pine Bluffs council meeting and began the meeting with a bit of thanks. “Every community has its champions and we are blessed to have many,” town administrator Caryn Miller said. “But Nancy (Sundin) goes above and beyond for Pine Bluffs. Every day she is out there picking up trash, pulling weeds, and helping the day care, and she never ask for anything in return.” Ragsdale commended Sundin on her eff... Full story

  • The fields are alive with the sound of combines

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 8, 2013

A local Pine Bluffs farmer leads a trail of wheat shaft dust Monday afternoon as harvest in our area hits the downturn. Wyoming Wheat Marketing Commission director Keith Kennedy estimated in his last wheat harvest report that 55 percent of Wyoming’s 145,000 acres of winter wheat had been harvested. According to Kennedy, yields were between 20-32 bushels per acre with moisture at 10.5 – 12 percent and proteins from 10.5 – 14 percent....

  • A festival as it should be: Food, fun, and friends

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 8, 2013

Trail Days began Wednesday evening, July 31, with dinner and a show. The authentic chuck-wagon feed outside the historic high school attracted many with the warm scent of peach cobbler. Beef brisket, cheesy potato casserole and corn on the cob completed the menu that 130 people dined on before the talent show. High West Energy supplied electrical wire spools for tables and the cast of the melodrama helped serve. Many guests were treated to “hocked” rolls. Matt Hockersmith tossed warm rolls at gu...

  • Weed infestation may put you in a 'bind'

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 8, 2013

A green lawn, well maintained, watered and cared for is a point of pride for its caretaker. However, as with any prized possession, enemies can attack and turn beauty into a beast. Many weeds that you find a simple eye pain, can be classified by the state as a pest or worse, a noxious weed which legally needs to be eliminated. Bind weed is one in particular that spreads quickly and is listed by the state of Wyoming as a noxious weed. It presents itself as a harmless running vine weed with... Full story

  • Life as it should be: A visit with the Grand Marshals

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

Who knew that a motor scooter that “didn’t start and wouldn’t go anywhere” could lead two people through over 60 years of wonderful life together. It was 1947, and John Marquardt’s parents were looking for land to purchase to start their farm after moving from Scribner, Neb., to Pine Bluffs. Roberta (Johnson) came over on her motor scooter and although she couldn’t ride off in the sunset with the eighth grader, John, she stole his heart. “We never quite got over each other,” Roberta says wi... Full story

  • What to do with spent blooms

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

There was a clearance sale on flowers at the grocery store this weekend. A rose bush was marked down from $20 to $1.99. Even at that price it was going to be a luxury purchase, so I stood there and stared at it and tried to find something wrong with it. I left the store without the rose. I told the blooming youth in the car what I found and they agreed we should buy it. Hard to argue with $2 and three blondes. So, I parked again, and everyone got out to buy the clearance flower. When we got it...

The rain came down in buckets this past week. It was welcome relief and kept us out of the “red” zone for fire danger. However, I did notice the fire department garage doors open a few times. Be safe out there with open fires. High danger or not, it’s a big responsibility to our land, our neighbors, and ourselves. I know some of you parents of school age children are secretly counting the days until school starts. Classes start Aug. 21 with half days for the first week. You can get a list of al...

  • Crock pot cooking is no 'nonsense'

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

Are you ready to say goodbye to summer? Have you gotten out your slow cooker yet? (Mine rarely sees the inside of the storage cupboard.) As summer turns into fall, it’s nice to take one last longing tasteful glance at fresh vegetable salads, berries filling the fridge and pie tins, and the whiff of grilled beef on the patio. But wait a minute. We live in the get-anything-you-want grocery market era. You can still have fresh tomatoes on a grilled burger. Maybe not picked out of your back yard s...

  • Talent as it should be at Trail Days

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Aug 1, 2013

Brian Stevens remembers talent shows when he was a child. “I teach piano lessons and didn’t have enough students for a recital so I thought, why not a talent show,” smiled Stevens. “This first year we have mostly musical acts, but I hope it expands to different talents next year.” Stevens said the response for the show was “fantastic,” and is already planning for next year. With the help of Jeff Weller, Stevens attracted 20 acts for the show that he emceed while Weller added “comic relief...

  • Discussions of new clinic and dispatch busy council

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 25, 2013

Director and CEO of the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center Foundation, Steve Stone, spoke to the Pine Bluffs Town Council Wednesday evening at their meeting. Stone reviewed the progress made thus far on the grant and plans for the new clinic in Pine Bluffs. “Thank you for helping us with the new facility,” Stone said. “The new layout will be approximately 4,400 square feet, compared with 2,700 at the current building.” Stone said he would need the council to help with the building permits... Full story

  • County commissioners appoint new assessor

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 25, 2013

The Laramie County Commissioners selected a successor to Brenda Arnold’s vacancy at their meeting Tuesday, July 16. “Both candidates for county assessor were strong in their interviews and their qualifications,” explained chairman Troy Thompson. “But Ken Guille really stood out and I believe will hit the ground running from his work with Brenda Arnold.” The rest of the commissioners echoed Thompson’s recommendation as well as the appreciation to the Shelly Shelton for applying. Shelton and Guill...

  • LCSD2 board prepared for 2013-14

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 25, 2013

The annual budget meeting was held after the monthly meeting of the Laramie County School District No. 2 board meeting July 17, in Albin. Before the trustees discussed funding the next fiscal year, they ran through their agenda with little or no issues to the items. The board discovered their discrimination policy didn’t include the word “religion” so the board approved the revision. In other policy work, the board passed on second reading two policies pertaining to board hearing proce... Full story

  • Time to explore the chuck wagon

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jul 25, 2013

Cheyenne Frontier Days kicked off last weekend. The music, the cowboys, the rides, and I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t pay homage to the food. Next to Old Frontier Town on your walk over to Indian Village, is a section of chuck wagons. Most days they boil, sear, and bake meals our pots and pans haven’t even imagined. The cast iron skillet and dutch oven are staples for campfire cooking. But just because you own a Kenmore, doesn’t mean you can’t try your skills in cast iron. If you’re looking for su...

Help prepare for their festival, Albin Day which was held on Saturday. Laramie County Commissioner Chairman Troy Thompson visited with Krakow and the council on a few topics involving the county. Thompson said the fire ban for the county would be enforced “soon.” He added the Archer Complex is complete and the com...
