If you do not live in Wyoming, you may lose your patience when you drive to the store or to school or to work with us. Unless we live in Cheyenne, and the city limits are a little long reaching themselves, we drive and we drive and we drive, drive, drive. This doesn’t seem odd to us. We grab water bottles on the way out the door. The kids grab books or electronics or pillows. Our trunks and back seats look more like a family room than a passenger area. It wasn’t until my mom came out for a vis...
The leftovers are about over and some of our neighbors have put up Christmas lights, decorations and the tree. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The gazebo and garden have pretty blue lights around them. The street light decorations will soon be up, and Albin will be ready to welcome the big guy and all the joy of the season. The Albin Elementary School concert is next week. In order to let the town council enjoy the concert, the town council meeting has been moved to Thursday, D...
Each year, Americans, and I hope to believe all humans, remember to say thanks in the month of November. Some remember because they live a grateful life everyday. Some remember because they have known want and hunger and loneliness, but take a day to believe in the possibility of better things. Some remember to be thankful because they have lost someone, and even though they ache for the missing piece, they are grateful to have had them for the time they did. Albin and its residents have many re...
A blanket of white covered Albin last week. Nov. 4 tied for the ninth latest snowfall. The latest snowfall ever recorded in Albin was Nov. 20, 1900. The change was exciting and welcomed, except for those farmers with sunflowers and corn still in the field. In the past week, we were been reminded how precious life is. Unfortunately, that happens when life is taken away from us. Terror can be overcome and survived. But in the aftermath of events, such as the tragic and terrorist ones in Paris, it...
The month of November is slipping by us. The whiffs of roasted turkey, pumpkin and pecan pies are getting ready to tempt our senses. Veterans Day was this week, and the students at Albin Elementary honored those who have served with a very nice program. Speaking of nice, Zane Willert will celebrate a nice birthday Nov. 19. A few days before him, on Nov. 17, Jenny Rooney will blow out her candles surrounded by her very nice family. The town council meeting is tonight, Thursday, at 7 p.m., in the...
Time waits for no man. However, it was pretty nice having time rewind an hour Saturday night. What did you do with your extra hour? Maybe you did a little yard work or cast a line in the water. What a beautiful Sunday we had to usher in the extra hour. I think most little people spent the hour sorting and tasting all the sweet treats they received Halloween evening. The Halloween Carnival was simply a blast. Ask any youngster and they would tell you the “fishing pond” was the funnest booth. Eve...
Boo to you and yours. Is it the candy or dressing up and knocking on neighbors’ doors that thrill the little ones so much? Halloween is a fun evening whether you are walking behind stealing all the good chocolate or staying at home handing out the good stuff. Remember to stay safe. Watch for little people traffic because they will not be watching for you. The time falls back an hour Saturday evening so we can fall back into bed for a bit longer before church on Sunday. Remember to set your c...
Some people get to come home every night. Others come home to a place they have never seen before. Some only dream of a homecoming. But everyone, if they stay away long enough, no matter what threshold they cross, are welcomed home with open arms. This past weekend had two different types of homecomings. The University of Wyoming had their homecoming festivities capped off by a long awaited win for the Cowboys. Many of our neighbors, friends and family called UW home for four years or so, and ma...
Wasn’t it just yesterday when we were mowing our lawns? This week, it seemed like the deck was camouflaged with dry yellow leaves. The time is coming for coats, shovels and very short days. Mother Nature must enjoy taunting us with longer summers, fooling us into thinking it might just last until December. Eighty five years ago, Albin was watching the same seasons change under their brand new town. Incorporated and named as a community in Laramie County, Wyoming, the small community of f...
Lights flashed on our horizon during a few evenings last week. Storms aren’t out of the ordinary in late September, but what a storm it was. Some of those strikes seemed like a crack on top of our heads. No harm except for a little break in the electricity. But a few hours without modern technology is good for families. The deer may have thought it was the flash of gunfire. It is deer season once again here in Wyoming. Hunters were out and about as bright as the lightening. No word on any of o... Full story
The changing color, scenery and temperature makes it seem as if we are living on a quilted landscape and the quilter could not make up their mind on color swatches. Big green machines are plowing through fields stitching a line of freshly cut hay, probably the last of the season. Those same green machines will soon be threading a line through the brown almost dead looking corn crop. Just for an added touch of color, Mother Nature spilled a nice cup of rain over our area this past week. It...
Everyday, each of us labor over something. Some with physical jobs in the sun. Some in tractors plowing, cultivating and harvesting goods for all of us. Some watering and feeding cattle, pigs, chickens and lambs so we can eat. Some sit in an office and invent, cure, design and build better ways for us to live. Some wake up little humans, feed them and send them out the door to learn to contribute to society. Some teach those little humans how to contribute. Whatever your labors are, we thank you...
September snuck up and took away our summer. Now, instead of lawn mower racket, we have school bus brakes in the morning. Instead of tasty sniffs from the barbecue, we have the smell of burning leaves and yard waste. Instead of early morning sunrises, we have early sunsets. No fear, Albin friends and neighbors. Labor Day weekend is a few days away. You still have time for a weekend getaway to Hawk Springs. Or take in the home opener for the Cowboys in Laramie. Or maybe fire up that grill at...
Have you ever experienced something amazing or beautiful or both at the cost of something tragic. It could have been a prodigal son or daughter coming home for a family funeral and reuniting with loved ones. It could be a divorce that leads to a happy marriage. Or maybe something as simple and good as a flat tire in a little town that had a great cheeseburger joint. The beautiful red sunsets that we are enjoying are coming at a high cost to our western neighbors. School children may not see... Full story
The funny thing about sunflowers? They don’t care if our summer has been less than bright. They don’t care if we have been smiling since last time they were here. They come and shine and brighten our world, no questions asked. And no expectations. Would it not be pleasant if more humans were like sunflowers. Expecting nothing in return and always greeting whoever passes their way with a smile and sunshine no matter who you are or what you can give them. Little kids are often sunflowers in our... The burden of summer is to squeeze as many sunburned noses, trips to grandma’s house, nights slept under the stars, swims and ice cream cones into the three months of freedom as possible. It doesn’t seem like a burden Memorial Day weekend. However, often the lazy days slip by unnoticed and we use the grandest form of extravagance by thinking we will have more summer days. Then, that flyer comes in the mail. The one announcing back to school shopping. And that is when we start adding up all the... Full story
Rev. Steffy spoke on the rules for Christian living from Romans 12:9-21. Next week, Pastor Opdycke is scheduled to be back and her sermon topic will be The Four M’s. If you have any news you would like to share, you can contact me at 970-895-2433 or by email at [email protected]. Where did all those kids and livestock go? The Laramie County Fair, of course. These little (and some big) guys have worked all year getting ready for this week. The fair started Saturday and runs through S... Full story
Those golden fields swaying in the wind will soon be dust in the wind, and truck loads of wheat headed to the bins. Wheat harvest has begun in Laramie County. Welcome the out-of-towners who show up to get all the fields cut. Harvest was in full swing a few years back. But Dean Anderson still found time to marry his sweet bride, Brenda. They celebrated their anniversary Monday. Blowing out candles this week are Kelley Kriz and Landon Lerwick. They both celebrate another year July 25. The addition...
Some weekends are more exciting than others. We mark the date on our calendar, plan ahead for time off, cook special treats for the meals, invite family and friends to join us, and then, when the day finally comes, we savor every minute. Albin Day is especially exciting for Albin residents, and the friends and family that drive in to join us. With all the food, traffic, laughing and enjoying, a few people still found it possible to shingle their roof Saturday. Perhaps they had a more exciting...
Saturday evening was loud, bright and happy in Albin. For a few hours, the barbeque grill warmed our tummies, the fireworks scared the blues away, and family and friends around us made us remember how fortunate we are to live in America. The Johnson family was fortunate to receive another beauty into their family. Friday, July 3, Steven and Amanda Johnson welcomed five pound four ounce Olivia Rose to their family. Grandparents Lon and Janet Johnson of Albin; great-grandparents, Richard and...
Sunday evening was ushered in with a crack of lightening, and buckets of rain fell all around Albin. The rain will end one day soon. While the hoses and sprinklers are turned off, the snakes seem to be coming out to act like hoses and scatter all over like water from our sprinklers. There were four black little fellas spotted in the Smith back yard. One was so bold as to curl up on the front door stoop. Needless to say, no Smiths ventured out the front door that day. A good excuse to go out...
Farmers out in their fields and youngsters in the ball field. It must be June. With all the recent rain, both fields are green and ready for growth and play. The pheasants and ducks are still enjoying the makeshift ponds on both ends of town. Speaking of field play, you can still sign up your little sluggers for baseball. Contact the community center for more information. The schedule should be out later this week. Remember to find the time to take in a game and cheer on our Albin Wildcats. As a...
Have you ever heard of that saying, "Dancing in between the rain drops"? Well, most of us have been mowing between the rain drops. Not that you will hear many complaining. At least we won't complain too loud. The farmers who are stuck in the mud and the lawn enthusiasts might be a little louder with their wishes for dryer days. But dryer weather will come soon enough and we will groan about dancing around the sprinklers when we move them. The Albin Baptist Church will be dancing around a bunch...
Spring shows itself in so many different forms. For some, it is the end of calving season capped off with branding and working or moving herds to green pastures for the summer. Others know it is spring when they start tilling rich brown soil to plant their future harvest and get rained out more times than bags of seeds. But some recognize spring as a time of moving part of their herd on to another pasture and also watching their seeds of love turn into grown up members of society. This past...
ay flowers. Sometimes April Showers bring May snow drifts. I know we are a little dry in our area, but wouldn’t it be better to have four or five wet rains than one big snowstorm? Watch what you wish for, right? I am pretty certain all the green grass is still under those drifts of white just waiting to be mowed later this week. Although the tulips might not come back, they are only meant to be enjoyed for a short time. Summer flowers are on their way. Some reports on the storm that I heard w...
