The weather turned the corner to spring this past weekend. What a great time to get out and freshen up the green turf around our homes. Earth Day was Tuesday and we often take this time of the year to clean our little patch of the earth. If you have waste to get rid of after cleaning, check with the town before dumping certain items from your lawns into the dumpsters. The town is restricted on what it can take to the landfill but you can take grass, tree limbs and other cleanup items to the...
Hopefully you weren’t fooled too much Tuesday. I think the biggest fool around is the weatherman. That old “lion” seemed to have eaten the “lamb.” The roads around home are drying up and the spring flowers are starting to find their way through the mud. Soon it will be time for the little guys to start running on the green green grass of the sports fields. Jillian McLaughlin tells us spring soccer season will start soon. If you want to sign up your little guy or possibly coach or ref, contact t...
Up here in Albin, the streets have declared a cease and decist (sp) on precipitation. Not only the gravel streets but the paved ones are buckling under all this water. What is it? Spring showed bring May flowers? We should have enough for the Rose Bowl Parade. The Farm and Home Show sounded like it went well. Jillian K., Jillian M. and Michelle served over 100 people the free lunch. Many speakers presented valuable information and a bunch of booths were in to browse through. The Sunday lunch... Full story
In case you planned to use your get-out-of-winter-now card, save it. Spring has not sprung, yet. It seems we just melt enough to see the drift from Thanksgiving and another round of the white stuff drops in. You won't hear me complaining. Similar to me telling the little guys to enjoy their youth as they are only a child for 15 years. After that, you can act like a child but you will never be one again. Winter only comes around once a year. After that, we have to show off the body that we "gaine...
Spring looks like it might be on its way. I know, you may not be able to see it through the snow drifts or have time to look as you dam up the water. But it is coming. Many Springs ago, a family welcomed a pink bundle of joy. Today we have the good fortune of having her in our community and counting her as a friend. Happy Birthday, Helen Peters! May your day be as bright and lively as the joy you bring us. The Albin Town Council met Thursday evening. Mayor Kelly Krakow said the town will buy a...
If you are running out of freezer space, lucky for you the snow drifts are sticking around for extra storage. I personally like the white ground. It makes it more of an adventure waiting to see what will pop through come spring. Legislative session began Monday. Thank you, Representative John Eklund, for representing Albin and the surrounding area so thoughtfully and professionally. If you have any questions or concerns about the budget or a bill going through, Eklund says calling is the best... Full story
That little rodent over in Pennsylvania was scared Sunday by his shawdow and went back to sleep for another six weeks. Maybe he was a Broncos fan and predicted a nasty day on the field. It was still a good game to watch, seeing Percy Harvin get to run back a touchdown in a Super Bowl. Something he never would have got to do with the Vikings. Now, on to the madness of basketball for a while. A bit of news from the Albin Elementary halls: Arizona school districts, including the Dysart Unified... Full story
From the halls of Albin Elementary: Mrs. Sharon Duffy and Mrs. Natalie Freeburg will attend the Wyoming Supreme Court 2014 Conference for Educators on February 12 and 13, 2014. The representatives of Albin Elementary school and Laramie County School District No. 2, along with educators from across the cowboy state were invited to Cheyenne by the three branches of Wyoming State Government. The teachers will participate in a specially designed workshop to provide them with ways to further engage... Full story
The wind continues to blow. No, really. I thought this weekend we would come out from behind the wind break but we just got more wind to break through. Advice for the week; don’t spit into the wind. Those pesky tumbleweeds are more than an eye sore. They can cause fires and block roads. Try to take care of the ones that whirl your way. Our condolences go out to Jason and Jillian McLaughlin as they mourn the loss of her aunt in South Dakota. Loss is never easy, especially when it is unexpected a... Full story
The weather, for January, isn't really that bad. Sure, it's cold. And the driveway drifts shut every afternoon. But those warm mild days are really nice and make the in-between days brr-able, I mean bearable. The Smith family received a pretty cool gift bag filled with sweets, treats and movies from Cody and Shawnae Branigan and family. It was such a nice surprise and was consumed and watched immediately. Thank you, Branigans! The Wyoming Wheat Growers Association met at the Albin Community... Full story
The Albin Baptist Church put on a great show. There was singing and harmonizing with the guests in the audience. 19 church and community members took the stage Sunday evening to bring the spirit of Christmas and the reason for the season to Albin and all. After the program, everyone enjoyed chili, turkey and noodle soup and lots of sweet treats from the church members. A big thank you to Curt Fox for shoveling the snow and helping the town get out from under the heavy white stuff. The Albin... Full story
Happy Days of Christmas! There is something especially crisp and sparkly during this time of year. And no, it's not the snow left in your boots from being outside. The warmth of the season and the joy in everyone's hearts will melt any grinch mood or the snow that sneaks in. Speaking of warm hearts, we have a few birthdays and anniversaries coming up. Carol Sorensen will celebrate her birthday Dec. 25 and Kelton Krakow will turn 9 on Dec. 30. Albin does a marriage well as Larry and Karen... Full story
Hello all and welcome to December. The month of giving and getting and celebrating the blessed life we have been given. Word on the street is that by the time you are reading this, a cold front with some snow and a "wee bit" of wind has moved in. As Monte said, "Batten down the hatches, it's about to blow!" Keep the home fire burning, it will soon pass. Maybe not to sunny and 75, but pass nonetheless. The Albin Elementary Christmas program is scheduled for Tues., Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Please...
Happy Thanksgiving! How nice it is that we get a chance each year to take time to say "Thanks." Albin may be small in size but mighty in gratitude and reasons to be thankful. We have new equipment thanks to our town council and money from different funds. We also received a new ambulance to help us when we fall down or get sick. Our museum is completed and looking good. The school is teaching and helping our students learn and grow every day. The community center has provided entertainment for...
Pretty nice weather for the end of November. The geese were flying over towards the south on Monday, so I guess this, too, will pass. Word on the street is this will be a harsh winter. Maybe I could lasso one of those birds and camp down south for a while? Thanksgiving is upon us, a week from today as a matter of fact. Make sure you remember all the blessings in your life. You might not want to say all of them before eating Thursday, due to the food getting cold. But remember, even if you can...
It is always a darker day when we learn someone we once knew is gone forever. The "what-if's" and why's trouble us. Brad Jacobsen died last weekend and his services will be held Friday in Cheyenne. Wiederspahn Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes is in charge of arrangements. Please remember his family in your thoughts and prayers. John Eklund, father of Val and Johnie, passed away early Monday morning. Visitation will be tomorrow at Schrader Funeral Home with funeral services Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at...
It was a little dark and spooky Sunday evening. No, no goblins were the cause. They had their fill of tricks and treats at the Albin Community Center Fall Festival Saturday night. The electricity went out Sunday evening for about four hours. No word yet on the why, just glad the "powers" that be got it fixed. Happy Belated Birthday, Ron Lerwick! He turned 60 and there was a sloppy joe pot luck at the community center last Sunday evening in his honor. Corn harvest is in full swing, lots of down...
Happy Halloween! Make sure you remember all those little ghouls and princesses out there and drive safe. Oh, and remember to leave some candy out. I'll be by later to trick you out of some. Jillian McLaughlin tells us due to the Burns Broncs home playoff football game Friday, the carnival will now be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at the community center starting at 4:30 p.m with a chili cook-off and supper. The carnival will start at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person, 12 and under free with a paid...
Kindergartener Duggan Kriz, son of Kelly and Jillian Kriz, big brother to Demmie, served as the Burns Bronc ball boy at the Burns Wheatland football game Friday night. Way to go, Duggan! We received a nice article about the magic show from the Parents Group in Albin. Here is what they said. On Thursday, October 10, residents of the Albin community and outlying areas were treated to a “Grand Magic Show”, performed by illusionist Duane Laflin. The show was brought to the Albin Elementary School gy...
Now you see Albin neighbors, now you don’t. A bunch of us were at the Magic Show Thursday evening. And what a show it was. Rumor had it Cody and Shawnae Branigan and family saw this act in Custer last summer and talked them in to coming down to do a show for the Albin Parent Group. Very nice. And although I didn’t make it in time for pancakes, I hear those disappeared as quick as a rabbit in a magicians hat. Thank you to the Albin Parent Group for making it happen. At the end of the show, Jil...
October is here. Pumpkins are coming out, the colors are changing, and my candy dish is just about empty from Easter goodies. Must be getting close to Halloween. “Oh, Oh, Oh, it’s magic, you know it.” Or maybe it’s just a show. Either way, come and be amazed as the Albin parent group along with Albin elementary hosts a MAGIC show. And it’s FREE! Just one of the ways Albin stays amazing; great volunteers who keep us entertained. The Magic Show will be held at Albin elementary, Thursday,...
Can you believe we had over five inches of rain in about seven days? Some areas west of Albin received as much as 10” of rain! I guess that might be called a “genuine drought buster,” or so Monte says. The moisture went down as far as 36” according to local moisture probes. Some reports are saying “too little too late.” But I like to think that anytime you are given what you asked for, you should be thankful. Even if it is a spoon after the ice cream has been passed. You still made it to desse...
Do you enjoy seeing the sunflower fields follow the sun as much as I do? I don’t know how much profit the farmer gets out of those fields of moving yellow, but I truly enjoy driving or biking by them. It sounds like a cold winter is coming, so soak in that warm yellow sight as much as you can so the Indian summer can keep you warm through the frigid months. Jillian tells me soccer and volleyball registrations are continuing. She would like you to volunteer to coach, ref, or just help out with t...
Well, all is quiet in our little home town. Children have returned to school, harvest is slowly wrapping up, and we are falling quietly into autumn. Soccer and volleyball registration forms should be in your students back packs this week. Contact the community center for more information. I know they are in need of coaches for soccer. Remember the community center offers memberships at reasonable rates when you miss swimming and getting the outdoor summer exercise. We are blessed with an indoor...
Watch what you wish for, huh. We can almost set our clocks by the rain or thunderstorms that come almost every day at 3 p.m. I tried to mow the lawn last weekend and it was more like cutting water than grass. What’s good for the green is not always good for the harvesting machine. Many farmers are patiently waiting to get in some fields and harvest. Here’s hoping the weather pattern turns a bit more dry for them to finish. The lunch program will host a community Sunday lunch Aug. 25, from 11:...
