The rain came down in buckets this past week. It was welcome relief and kept us out of the “red” zone for fire danger. However, I did notice the fire department garage doors open a few times. Be safe out there with open fires. High danger or not, it’s a big responsibility to our land, our neighbors, and ourselves. I know some of you parents of school age children are secretly counting the days until school starts. Classes start Aug. 21 with half days for the first week. You can get a list of al...
Welcome to the end of July! Summer is going faster than an ice cream cone melts in the sun. Get those last licks of fun in while you can. Open swim continues at the community center Wednesday’s from 1-4 p.m. Trail Days is next week in our neighbor-to-the-south Pine Bluffs. Grab your hat and lawn chair and get out for another small town friendly festival. The posters lists many cool things to do as you welcome August in. Our local inspiration, Tim Malm, had a big week last week. He attended Cheye...
Albin News Readers, Monte here after a one year hiatus which began with the birth of our second son. On Sunday, Mr. Tavin Ronald Lerwick turned one year old. He unwittingly celebrated by grabbing a handful of delicious chocolate frosted cupcake while all the people at the table sang a strange song. Mom usually isn’t that careless with cupcakes so he made sure to quickly jam as much as possible in his mouth once he got it there. Please don’t expect a regular supply of news from me, but I aim to...
In our small community, we gasp, mourn and cry with our own when they lose or fall, encourage them to get back up again when they doubt their future, and root and celebrate when they come back. We have two bright examples in our meager little community of “comeback kids”. Richard Larson is showing us all there is life after sorrow and hope in walking the path God has given. We are happy for you, Richard and enjoy this time. Tim Malm has published a book about his harrowing experience in the last...
Happy Fourth of July! May each burst of color in the sky remind you how great our country is. And think how odd it would be to eat fish and chips today instead of hot dogs and apple pie. The community center will be closed July 6 for the entire day to do the wedding celebration of Steven Johnson and his bride Amanda Langlois. Congratulations! Tim Malm’s book is out on the shelves of local libraries and book stores. What an inspiration he has been for so many. I quickly paged through it while w...
Remember to join your neighbors and friends at the Albin Baptist Church community pot luck picnic on the Fourth of July starting at 11:30 a.m. Pot luck with drinks provided. Cook your favorite dish to share and grab your lawn chair to catch some conversations and share some fun. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Anderson would like to welcome their new granddaughter to the world, and give you a chance to see the little cutie, Avery Ruth. Stop by their home, Sunday, June 30. Avery and her family will be moving...
The Albin Baptist Church will host a community picnic Thursday, July 4 at 11:30 a.m. Please bring a pot luck dish or two to share and some comfortable seats to lounge in while talking to friends and neighbors. Drinks will be provided. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join the fun. You never know how great your town is until they come to your rescue. I have always liked the saying, “It takes a community to raise a child,” and I am so appreciative for the town of Albin being co-parents wit...
The Albin Baptist Church hosted their vacation bible school this week. The hungry youngsters were well fed with Bible verses, songs, fun and of course food. Thanks to all the church members for helping with lunch and snacks and to Pastor John Morrison for “feeding” the students positive learning. The temperatures are creeping upwards. Time to take a dip in our community center pool. Open swims will be held Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. To make paying for open swims easier, the cen...
The lawn mowers in the evening and the pesky singing birds out my window at 4 a.m. tell me summer is here. And what a better way to begin the outdoor season than with a clean-up. Between the garage sale and the town clean-up, our little community got quite the make-over last week. A big thanks to thanks to mayor Kelly Krakow and son Kelton, councilman Bob Anderson, town maintenance Aaron Anderson, and Jerrie Gehrman for helping with the clean-up. The kids are looking forward to baseball. Stop...
Friday May 24, Delta Club met at the Memorial garden next to the Post Office to take care of our plot. Weeded and planted flowers. Visited with people passing by. We then picked up trash along the hi way between town and the cemetery! We do have one request — please stop throwing out “beer bottles” they are so heavy! Attending this fun morning was Pat Palm, Vernita Anderson, Kathy Hundley and Martha Cannon. Refreshments were provided by Pat Palm....
With all this cool rain and warm days, we could be fooled into thinking our drought days are behind us. I just wish the rain would not help the dandelions and the sun would scorch them into green grass. Chris Beckman who lives south of Albin wanted everyone to know his wife, Abby, who helps Mike at the bar sometimes, is in ICU at CRMC. Abby has been in the hospital with pneumonia since April 23, and is not doing well. She can’t have flowers in ICU, but Chris hoped everyone would keep Abby in o...
I think spring is here. I mowed the lawn for the first time last week, and saw the black rooster walking around town, almost exclaiming, “It’s time for yard work.” I hope he doesn’t have the same fate as the black bunny. Some of the town got together for a fundraiser for one of our own. It is so nice to hear the sounds of a neighborhood in a small town lifting others up. Please help out if you can. The Albin elementary will be taking their all-school field trip to F.E. Warren Air Force Base Tu...
We hope you voted Tuesday. Our community needs strong leaders and it is your vote that gives them support to do the best for Albin. Jillian McLaughlin won the quilt at the community lunch a few weeks back. She donated it to the museum, so we can all enjoy it for years to come. Thank you, Jillian. Menu at the community center for this week is: Friday, Chicken Alfredo with peas; Monday, Chef salad and bread sticks; Tuesday, Lemon chicken with baked potatoes and mixed vegetables; Wednesday Pork...
The laughs from the Albin Baptist church Friday could be heard all the way in Cheyenne as local ladies giggled some stress away. I wasn’t able to make it but it sounds like God smiled on the ladies of Albin. Albin elementary will host their concert this evening with a community pot luck to kick things off at 5:30 p.m. The kids will begin entertaining at 6:30. The kids start showing off their track skills next week. The K-3 grade track day will be Wednesday, May 8 from 12-2:30 p.m. at the Pine B...
My coworker said these late winter days made her think we were living in Alaska. The hibernation-type weather makes me want to bake Christmas candy and go shopping. But spring is suppose to tease us this weekend with camping and fishing worthy weather. Maybe even some much needed yard work. The town of Albin will have their election Tuesday, May 7. Community members running for office include: Mayor Kelly Krakow for his reelection, incumbent Wic Rooney, Kelly Kriz and incumbent Bob Anderson are...
Our little community welcomed precipitation this week. This round of white stuff was more of a spring version, but still dampened the flowers spirits considerably. Remember to mark on your calendar April 28, for the community dinner. The community center lunch program will host a lunch from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and raffle off the lovely quilt that day as well. Stop by the center for more information and a few raffle tickets. Little league soccer season is rolling and kicking through the snow....
What a mild couple of days. The birds were singing pretty loud and I was raised thinking that meant a storm was on its way. Only time will tell. But the yard is ready for spring and the children are ready to play outside. The Bountiful Baskets will be delivered Saturday at the community center. You need to order your basket by Tuesday, so you have missed this week. But stop by Saturday morning, volunteer and see what it is all about. And mark on your calender to order April 22 and 23. Elections...
Welcome to April! What a nice mellow start to the first spring month. Many local children came to the Easter Egg Hunt. The community center sponsored the event and everyone enjoyed the warm weather, the candy and the sparkly surprise eggs. The lunch program at the community center will host a community lunch Sunday, April 28 from 11:30 a.m until 2 p.m. They will also draw the winner of the quilt raffle that afternoon. So, stop by the center today and get your ticket. Our ranchers are into...
Well, it seemed like we had snow more days last week than any month last winter. It was the nice, light spring snow, and melted quickly. Maybe it helped usher in spring. And spring is here. The irises are sneaking out of the ground, and the green grass is stretching its blades. It might be time to dust off the rakes and hoes, get that yard looking great for the Easter bunny. The Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, March 30th at 11:00 a.m. in the baseball field. Contact the community center...
The farm show at the community center was a nice treat for anyone who attended. A big thanks to Jillian McLaughlin, Jillian Kriz, Michelle Childers, Pastor John Morrison, Shawnae Branigan, Heidi Romsa, Kelly Rundell, the Burns FFA members and all the other volunteers that helped create an educational and entertaining day. The lunch was great and you couldn’t have asked for better weather. The community center will host an Easter egg hunt Saturday, March 30. Call the center for more i...
Once again, neighbors, we find ourselves getting a little cardiovascular workout by shoveling and sweeping snow off our walks. The snow was very pretty, students wished it had hit on Thursday or Monday, and I personally would have liked to have the foot of snow that was predicted, but everyone still enjoyed a quiet storm. The town maintenance man recently quit. The council will be in search of another individual to take care of our community. Contact the town office for more information....
The community center hosted lunch Sunday. The kids and I ventured out in the snow after church and dined with about 40 other Albinites. The food was warm and tasty. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbors. Thanks to Michelle Childers, Karen Sorensen, Jillian Kriz, and Jillian McLaughlin for treating the town to a very nice dinner. Bountiful Baskets will be at the community center Saturday morning. You need to put your order in by Monday the week before the baskets...
The deep freeze has hit Albin. It seems just when we get a day without snow, the wind blows in chilling temperatures. But, sooner than we can get our propane tanks filled again, spring will be here with warm winds and light rains. The Albin town council met Thursday evening. The museum is still moving along. The final touches are ones that require a bit warmer weather than we’ve had lately. Jillian McLaughlin reminded everyone about the farm show March 13. Call the center for more information o...
All is quiet on the home front. Snow seems to fall almost every night making the town look like a ski resort. Many houses have for sale signs up and we still have our lonely little Country Hair Designs sitting dark. Spring sure would be a nice time to welcome a new family to town who happens to have their cosmetology license. Get the word out. Our looks are depending on it. If you have any news, email it to us at [email protected]....
