In a Facebook post that originated on October 9th some of the citizens of Pine Bluffs were upset to discover that the local recycling was not being picked up by the recycling truck, but was instead being picked up wi...

New chief, Chance Walkama has been here for several years, but you may not know him since he has been almost exclusively night shift since he started in 2013 with Chief Don Taylor. Walkama started part time policing with Officer Char Madden and Former Chief Justin Trout. Now that he has worked his way up to the position of Chief of Police he is excited about the possibilities that are in...
Monday's town council meeting hosted US Census Representative Stephanie Freeman. Freeman was here in town to stress the importance of participating in the census. For those that are unaware, much of our government funding is based on our population. That being said, if the numbers are low, then the money coming in is not what is needed to fund the government entities in town, think things like senior programs and Head Start. Freeman wanted to encourage the council to form a complete count...
A Presidential proclamation in 1922 started the annual Fire Prevention Week. Along with the month of October being recognized as Fire Prevention Month, Fire Prevention Week has been used to promote fire safety at home, at work, and in our communities. The week is also a time to reflect on those firefighters and first responders that gave their lives in the selfless act of helping others. In Pine Bluffs these men and women work on a volunteer basis, giving up their personal time to come to the...
The Burns Broncs pulled out a win this last week against the Glenrock Herders. Although a non-conference game, this one was a rivalry that the boys had anticipated for a while. The last time the boys faced Glenrock they were beaten pretty soundly, and had been looking for an opportunity to earn that lost respect. Glenrock played hard as usual, but were just not able to get the ball to the end zone. The first quarter started off with a bang with #34 Boe Clayson scoring the first touchdown on a...
Coming off of last weeks win, the Hornets suffered another defeat this week at the hands of the Big Horn Rams. Twenty minutes into the first quarter the Rams scored their first touchdown, and from there they had found their momentum. After three more touchdowns in the first quarter the Hornets just couldn’t seem to find their stride. The Hornets picked up a safety for two in the second, but that would be the best that they could do for this game. The Rams picked up three more in the second quarter, and 1 in the third including a field goal b...

When my mother began forgetting things, telling the same stories over and over, I worried that she might be in danger of not being able to care for her finances the way that she used to. I was lucky that I had two sisters that lived in the same town as she did that were able to take care of her as her condition worsened. It never occurred to me that either of my sisters would ever take advantage of my mother; however, there are many families who are not that lucky. When people hear the word...
Saturday saw the completion of the third annual End of the Trail Kite Festival. Despite the cold and the almost 40 mile per hour gusts that were not very kite friendly, the day went off without a hitch. Kite flyers from all over came out to show their kite skills along with several vendors, and KRRR Radio. Kite flyers from the American Kitefliers Association and the Rocky Mountain Kite Association were there to demonstrate their stunt flying ability. Darwin and Berna Smith were also there all...

On April 20, 1999, Rachel Joy Scott became the first victim in the Columbine High School shooting. Rachel was known as a bright light, a shining example, and a genuinely nice person. People who knew Rachel often speak of how kind she was, and how much she honestly wanted to make a change in the world around her. There is no way to know what kind of person Rachel would have grown up to be, but even in death, she continues to touch the lives of others. According to the National Center for School...
This weekend at the Pine Bluffs Distillery three new whiskeys made their debut. Chad and Theresa Brown were on hand along with the soulful sounds of Canadian duo Winnie Brave to introduce Pine to these three new flavors. "Spring" sipping whiskey with hints of hibiscus and honey, this smooth creation is a hit with the locals alongside its sister "Summer" with its orange vanilla flavor. I tried the "Summer" whiskey in an Afternoon Tea. With some crushed mint and ice this was a refreshingly cold...
The idea of the challenge coin can possibly be dated back to ancient Rome. It is said that if a soldier performed well during battle he would be paid his daily wages plus one extra coin. Some historians say that the extra coin was specially stamped with the legion that it came from, and many of the soldiers would save that particular coin. It's unclear where the modern practice of handing out coins comes from. There is a story of a wealthy officer from World War I that had bronze medallions...
