The leases were the big subject on the agenda at the Burns council meeting on January 27. The night started out with a thank you and celebration. Katie Ryan wanted to thank the council for giving her a chance to create a place for the people in Burns to do activities. With the help of volunteers, Burns Senior Center has been opened for one year on February 5. She went through the activities in the past year and she again thanked the council for the opportunity. The meeting began with public...
For the last five years, I have had the great privilege of serving my local health system as Medical Director for Home Hospice. Every week I sit in a meeting with the multidisciplinary caretakers on this team – the nurses who provide the great majority of the hands-on care, social worker, pharmacist, dietician, and pastor. We discuss all the patients currently under our care and discuss how we can improve each patient's suffering and maximize their quality of life. The patients we care for on h...
I want to paint you a picture: a 19-year-old who barely passed his own classes is now in charge of teaching your child, a librarian is hauled off in handcuffs for a book some snowflake found "objectionable," and a school board that is bought-and-paid-for by out-of-state interests. If you don't like this, then buckle up for some alarming news: this dystopian future is at our doorstep. Here are five current state legislative bills that would help make this picture a reality: HB 0100 would allow...
Laramie, Wyo. — Jan. 27, 2025 — Hummingbirds are small but remarkably tough. Some species make migrations of over 5,590 miles a year. Their journeys are largely fueled by nectar, which is sipped from wildflowers and converted to fat. However, climate and land-use change are making the distribution of wildflowers along their migratory routes more unpredictable. To buffer against these challenges, hummingbirds use a process called torpor, a sort of overnight hibernation. In a research paper published this month, researchers from UW and the Uni...
For the last ninety years kids go out into the arena to catch a calf to raise and show for the following year. It began in 1935 with 10 kids catching 10 calves. Now, the contest is set up for 40 kids and 40 calves. Every year the members of Future Farmers of America or 4-H apply to do the program. Once they are approved the kids go catch a calf during the National Western Stock Show. The calf and youth have a sponsor. The sponsor supports the youth through the time with calf. Both are dealing wi...
Pine Bluffs, a town steeped in tradition, boasts a unique program that fosters intergenerational connections within its elementary school. This program, a cornerstone of the school's culture, transcends age and background, uniting students in shared experiences that cultivate essential skills. One such tradition involves sixth graders partnering with their kindergarten "Buddies" for a year-long reading program. This symbiotic relationship, eagerly anticipated by both groups, provides a platform...

What a year for Burns Senior Center. The town of Burns needed a place for the people to gather, do activities, and eat food. Katie Ryan presented an idea to the town Burns council in January of 2024 for a senior center. They gave her ten days to set it up. It got accomplished with her leading the way with volunteers helping from the community. The doors opened on February 5, 2024. At the beginning , it was just snacks, and coffee with people visiting from the community. Then a breakfast club was formed on Saturdays that brought in more people....

"Life is better when people are laughing". Author unknown. This is a motto Luke Person lived by most his life. Luke Person had worked for the Pine Bluffs Elementary School for thirteen years as maintenance. At the beginning of 2024-2025 school year, the town, school, and his family lost him. It was devastating for everyone who knew Person, and it happenned very suddenly. His wife Leanne said, "He loved the kids." Everyday he would tell a joke to the students. They would look for him to hear the...
Some people like to go for a walk and some people like to hike. Getting out and enjoying the fresh air can boost your mood. Seeing a pretty rock in the road, on a hill, on a bluff or at the lake gets most people's attention. Every rock is made of a mineral. Geology is the study of them. Being located around hills, bluffs, and mountains people like to study the rocks. The University of Wyoming outreach program received an Aging Grant for student to road show different areas of Wyoming. They have...
The new year has finally brought winter to Pine Bluffs as our extremely cold temperatures Sunday night caused an issue with our electrical system. A portion of the town was without power for about an hour while the rest of town was experienced a short outage. I would like thank Loren, the Public Works Department and High West Energy for their quick response and the citizens for their patience. One of the take-aways from this outage is the need for a formal reporting process, and a way to update those impacted. We will work towards finding a...

Lately I've been reminded of a blockbuster movie from my youth. It contains a scene that even those who never saw the film are likely to recognize. A sleeping family is jolted awake, and from the foot of the bed the young daughter sings "they're here!" One might wonder why I'm thinking so much about Poltergeist. That quote started ringing in my brain during our last monthly clinic meeting, when our lab director reported on the previous day's influenza statistics. Nearly 90% of the tests were...
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) introduced legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to honor wildland firefighters in the United States. My wife has a saying for me, and justifiably so, I suppose. She tells me, "More isn't always better. Less is more." Usually, she is using it in the context of my desire for an incredibly full schedule, or maybe in my quest to try nearly everything on the menu, all at once. She reminds me I am no longer a teenage boy who can eat without consequences. Or she may use it in the context of my need to conquer every possible restaurant and place of interest on what is supposed to be a "relaxing"...
Sirens always have people on the edge of their seats. They are curious to know what is happening. The noise usually means that there are accidents, an arrest, or people are in trouble. Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. The year 2024 was one of the most destructive wildland fire years in Wyoming history. Now the current fire in Los Angeles, California has become the worst structure fire in Los Angeles history. In our small town of Pine Bluffs, we have only a couple of dozen volunteer firemen to protect our homes and grassland with only a few quick responding local fire fighters when these fires are...
CHEYENNE - Today in his inaugural address, President Trump outlined his policy on illegal immigration and securing the nation's border. We must take decisive action to follow his lead and work at all levels of government to implement these policies. Wyoming, often perceived as remote and insulated, is not immune to the impacts of illegal immigration. Despite being far from the southern border, Wyoming is - in many ways - a border state. The challenges posed by porous national borders ripple across the nation, reaching even the Cowboy State....
