The Gardening for Success 2018 regional conference closed Sunday after finishing an information packed weekend with a lot of fun mixed in. The conference kicked off Saturday morning with Scott Skogerboe's presentation on edible landscapes. His presentation was the beginning of a morning of seminars on trees, plant diseases, soil composition, herbs and flowering plants. Whew! With so much to take in, how do you do it all? Well, the answer is that you don't. Attendees had to pick and choose what...
Once every year, thousands of students and teachers gather together in the Casper Event center to view the best artwork from high school students throughout the state. For the first time in many years, the Pine Bluffs High School attended the Wyoming High School Art Symposium. There were over five thousand pieces of artwork on display. This year, Pine Bluffs had fourteen students participate, and Burns had three. Pine Bluffs students brought home four blue ribbons and Burns brought home one as...
This past Friday, I had the pleasure of attending Casper's Annual High School Art Symposium. The kids that went spent approximately six hours on a bus, three one way and three back. In my opinion, it was worth every second. There was just about everything there, from taxidermy, to 3D sculptures, to paintings, fused glass, ceramics, and everything in between. It was incredibly eye opening to be around that much quality artwork, and honestly pretty overwhelming. The beauty of art, in my opinion,...
Several strong performances in Pine Bluffs landed Burns a third-place finish at the Pine Bluffs invitational track meet Thursday, April 19. Keenan Manlove was the only Bronc to outright win an event. His 10-07.00 effort in the pole vault carried him to first place in that event, ahead of Boe Clayson who finished with a 10-01.00 vault. However, because a number of Broncs chipped in to place and thereby earn points in other events, they were still able to walk away with third-place honors. The...

Maddie Fornstrom put together several strong showings during Thursday’s meet, including a win in the 300-meter hurdles. Thursday’s meet marked a turning point in the season as the meets will begin to get “more serious” as the stakes are raised. This week, students from Pine Bluffs and B...
Operating a swimming pool is expensive. As an example, Pine Bluffs pays about $60,000 each year to operate its swimming pool, which is only open three months out of the year. That’s why council members voted Monday to assess fees at the swimming pool this summer. It will cost $1.50 to visit the swimming pool this summer. “A pop costs a dollar,” Council Member Donn Randall said. “We’re squabbling over a dollar.” In addition to $1.50 being nominal, Randall said the future fees will encourage p...
A Cheyenne woman faces more than a dozen charges after she was arrested following a high-speed pursuit that ended near Egbert last week. According to a Wyoming Highway Patrol press release, Natsha Jo Dawn Patnode, 29, was arrested late Tuesday night following a pursuit that originated in Cheyenne. The previous night, Patnode was observed traveling 104 mph in a posted 75 mph zone on Interstate 25. When troopers attempted to stop her, she fled into Colorado before the chase was terminated, the patrol alleges. Tuesday night, Patnode was observed...

Practically synonymous with each other in description, except for their Scientific names and the exact type of damage they do, the Mountain Pine Beetle, Pine Bark Beetle, Black Hills Beetle, Rocky Mountain Pine Beetle...and sometimes described by other, more colorful explicative terms, are all the same little guy but, NOW we have added to the list, the IPS beetle and for purposes of this article I will group them all: Generally and collectively: "Bark Beetles". The dangerous little tree killers...

If you've ever been around baby animals, I'm sure you're able to recognize the warm, cheerfully-serene feeling that seems to radiate from around them. Personally, it doesn't get much better than walking out to the barn and seeing the small, adorable, fuzzy face of a week old lamb staring back at me. With our final ewe deciding to have her lambs around the sixth of this month, we had two last lambs added to the mix, Dopey and Pongo. Around my house you would find multiple hints at springtime....
BURNS - Four Pine Bluffs Hornets added to already impressive seasons last week with wins on the track and in the field at the Burns Invitational track meet last Thursday. Riding an outstanding year in the 100-meter dash, Seth Tangeman took home first-place honors in the event. For his 136-foot throw, Tucker Norman earned first place in the discus toss. Haize Fornstrom won the triple jump by nearly three feet with his 40-8.50 effort. And Ishmael DePaullite, who is also having quite a senior...
BURNS - Kendra Sloan might have earned the Lady Hornets' only event win last week at the Burns Invitational track and field meet, but several of her teammates put up strong performances to help the team take second-place. Sloan won the pole vault at 8-10.00, but a number of her teammates earned several top-four places. Head Coach Dustin Lee has referred to it as nickel and diming in the past. The team's diversity showed yet again this year as Lady Hornets were represented - and well - in events...
BURNS — Arguably the nicest weather for track this year set the stage for the Burns High School track and field invitational last Thursday. And the Broncs took advantage of it as team members put up several strong performances to earn third place. They were led by Wyatt Ebben and Tyler Norris, who each won an event. Ebben blazed a 54.42 400-meter dash, earning himself gold in the process. Norris continued and already stellar season on the pole vault at 13-01.00. Teammate Keenan Manlove finished behind Norris in second at 10-07.00. Alex Pyle h...

Her teammate Layne Burnett dominated mid-distance events with wins in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs (2:40.15 and 6:07.87). But they weren’t the only Lady Broncs to have strong showings last Thursday. The result sheet from the meet is riddled with Lady Broncs. Joining Perez in the 400-meter to place were Schuylar McDonnell, Mackenzie Faircloth, Madison Thompson and Cassidy Wei...

CHEYENNE-Wyoming Insurance Commissioner Tom Glause is asking Wyoming consumers and Wyoming clubs and organizations to be aware of some recent scams and fraudulent schemes that have been perpetrated against fundraising efforts. Glause said, “Summer is coming and it is the season for many fundraising events such as golfing or fishing tournaments. Wyomingites should ask questions and be certain that the companies insuring these fundraising programs are legitimate.” Frequently, when a business or organization intends to host a fundraiser with cas...
As Wyoming’s snowpack begins to melt and rivers and streams begin to rise, it's important to remember that flooding is not covered by homeowners insurance. Wyoming Insurance Commissioner Tom Glause encourages renters, homeowners, and business owners to better understand their flood risk and insurance coverage following the heavy winter snowfall in some portions of our state. Glause said, “Flooding of Wyoming rivers typically occurs in late spring or early summer as the mountain snowpack melts. Although parts of the state have had a relatively m...
Have you ever wondered which town in Wyoming deserves the title of the track and field capital of Wyoming? If one looks at the state archives of individual champions, a likely place to start is the 200-meter dash. The oldest event in the Olympics was called the stadion in which the runners sprinted over the distance of 1 stade (192 meters). A stade was the length of the original Olympic Stadium in 776 B.C and the stadion was the only event competed in the first thirteen Olympics. Since 1972,...
EGBERT - Just off a dusty dirt road somewhere in southeastern Laramie County, Jeremy Fryda and his crew of linemen are hard at work ensuring the area's most rural residents have electricty. Today, it's a warm April afternoon with a light wind. Fryda likes today's weather, but he's quick to note linemen often work in the worst of conditions. "It's really nice today," he says. "But these guys are out here working when the snow is flying." Fryda is one of dozens of linemen who work for High West En...
BURNS - A two-second glance at your phone while driving can kill you. Or maybe it's having one too many beers before getting behind the wheel. And who knows what could have happened if you chose to wear your seatbelt. That was the message law enforcement had for students at Burns Junior/Senior High Thursday. Representatives from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Laramie County Sheriff's Department and Laramie County Fire Protection District 6 were on hand at the school to remind students of the...
Most people will look at soil and just see dirt. What is soil, really, and what makes good soil? Soil is productive. That means it will grow your plants from seedlings, whether flowers or vegetables, into vigorous, healthy mature plants. Soil starts out as rocks. Over the years the rocks are ground down finer and finer until they become dirt. It's easy to tell how fine the rocks have been ground by how fine the particles are in the dirt, from coarse sand to fine, slippery clay. But, it takes a l...
