  • Support your local Farmer's Market

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Jul 11, 2019

Yummm! Fresh veggies. Absolutely delicious. And where do you get them? Definitely not at the grocery store. Not that the grocery store is bad, but they all have to deal with the logistics of getting the vegetables from the farm to your house. That takes time and a lot of it. The logistics chain of today is pretty good but, out of necessity, it has a lot of links and they all delay the food getting to you. Let's start at the farm. And no, children, your food doesn't come off the grocery store...

Governor Gordon stated that his goal was to develop a true two year budget, thus eliminating any “across the board c...

  • Summer Really is Here!

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Jul 4, 2019

What a contrast! Last week as I wrote the article it was still cold. This week we've had temperatures over 90 degrees nearly all week. Maybe summer really has made its appearance after all. At least, summer in Wyoming. Now the question becomes one of what will those extreme temperature fluctuations do to the plants? Unfortunately, not much that is good. All plants need at least a little time to prepare for a change in season. That means that the more gradual the temperature change, the better...

  • Women Vote

    Victoria Smithey Pine Bluffs Post|Jul 4, 2019

December 10, 1869, marked the day when the unconditional law allowing women to vote and hold office was passed in Wyoming. Fifty years ahead of the rest of the nation in this single act Wyoming earned its nickname as the Equality State when twenty-one years later it became the forty-forth state in the Union. Originally told that Wyoming would only be allowed in the Union if it rescinded the suffrage law, Wyoming legislature was quoted to say, "We will remain out of the Union one hundred years...

  • The Equality State must lead by example in providing equal work for equal pay

    Robin Sessions Cooley JD Director|Jul 4, 2019

CHEYENNE – Wyoming's official nickname is The Equality State. Wyoming has work to do to live up to that moniker. June 10 was Equal Pay Day in Wyoming. It's the day of the year that represents the extra days in 2019 a woman has to work to earn the same amount of pay a man received for working in 2018. In other words, a woman in Wyoming has to work 17 months and 10 days to earn what a man in Wyoming earned in only 12 months. Remember also that the national Equal Pay Day was April 2. Wyoming does not score well here either. We are behind the n...

  • Summer? Really?

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Jun 27, 2019

According to the calendar, Friday, June 21st, was the first day of summer. Well...you couldn't prove it by me. The Advanced Master Gardener class was at the University of Wyoming Entomology Lab that day. First, we had to drive through snow on the summit. Then it was rainy and cold all day. Summer? Sure didn't feel like it. I think I'm ready for a little bit of that global warming. This cooler, wetter weather pattern we seem to be stuck in was predicted last winter by Don Day and, once again,...
