Catherine Wissner announced last week that she will be retiring on June 30, 2023. Not only is Laramie County losing a gem but this entire region is losing one of our best resources for horticultural knowledge. The Albin Community Center was full of kids and activities for the evening. For the last few years St. Paul's Fall Turkey Dinner has been canceled due to the COVID pandemic that turned everyone's lives upside down. The stage was set at the Burns High School Commons. On October 18th at 6:30 p.m. the Burns American Government senior class hosted a School Board Candidate Forum. Issues of cleaning was discussed and dog licenses at the Burns town council meeting on October 24th at 5:30 p.m.. The first issue addressed was the acceptance of a resignation by Mayor Jim Clark. Two sets of paperwork are signed with the town of Albin. The Albin Town Council met on October 13th at 7:00 p.m. For old business the lunch program is looking good. Move over, Charlie Brown! There's a new great pumpkin in town. And a new state record. Andy Corbin of Cheyenne broke his own state record this year with a mammoth 1,854 pound pumpkin. In 2019, Corbin broke the state record with a pumpkin weighing in at 1,491 pounds. That's after he set the record in 2015 with a pumpkin weighing 1,268 pounds. Halloween, a fun imaginative time of year is coming through in the cupcakes at the Pine Bluffs High School Food Science class where the students were competing in Cupcake Wars. The kids were lined up for a free pumpkin and activities at the Pine Bluffs Community Center on October 15th for the annual Fall Festival. Every year Pine Bluffs Recreation gives free pumpkins away to the kids. Every year a Pine Bluffs senior student is given a citizenship award. This award is given by the Laramie County Retired Education Personnel Group. If you haven't finished your harvest by now I'm sure you're close. I finally got the potatoes in and the garlic planted but I'm leaving the squash on the vines as long as possible. I was nearly six weeks late planting so they still need more time to ripen. If I can get two more weeks without a hard frost I think they'll come in okay. Every year the Wyoming Centennial Farm & Ranch program honors families who owned and operated on the same farm or ranch for a hundred years or more at the Wyoming State fair.
