I am writing this on Thursday, Nov. 21, and it's snowing. I shoveled an inch or so but it's still coming down. Wyoming weather is an interesting phenomenon, yesterday it was 40+ degrees and today it's 8 degrees and snowing! The Cheyenne library has a wonderful entertainer coming on Thursday, December 12 at 7p.m. It's Jerry Barlowe who is going to give a Celtic Christmas Concert. Mr. Barlowe is an acclaimed guitarist and a world class storyteller. It's going to be a great introduction to the...
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you from the Burns Branch Library! Did you know: In a letter to his daughter sent in 1784, Benjamin Franklin suggested that the wild turkey would be a more appropriate national symbol for the newly independent United States than the bald eagle (which had earlier been chosen by the Continental Congress). He argued that the turkey was a much more respectable bird and a symbol of courage. In 2007, President George W. Bush granted a "pardon" to two turkeys, named May...
The Bountiful Baskets program in Burns was a success for me and I encourage others to try it. I received fruit and vegetables and my family has used it all. I was impressed with how well organized everyone was. I parked at the Burns-Plex, stood in line, picked up my groceries and was back in my car in about 15 minutes. A very nice young man even carried my sacks to the car! The website is http://bountifulbaskets.org/ and the baskets are $15.00 each. A person must place an order the Monday...

Please feel free to call, 547-2249; e-mail, [email protected] or just stop by with your news and information. Who is buried in the middle of the Cheyenne Frontier Days arena? Steamboat was the star horse of the bucking bronco events at Cheyenne Frontier Days from 1901 to 1914. He was named Steamboat because he had a broken bone in his nose which caused him to make a snorting sound like a steamboat. One of the nation’s best, and most distinctive logos, the image on Wyoming’s uniforms depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse. This symbol has be...

Known both as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941; however the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-1783). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle created a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration...

As we waited for “Titan,” the forecasted blizzard to hit last weekend, I wondered why we name winter storms. We’ve had “Sandy,” “Iago,” “Gandolph,” “Q,” and who can forget our favorite little fishy “Nemo” from the Disney movie of the same name? According to the National Weather Service there are five reasons to name winter storms: • Naming a storm raises awareness. • Attaching a name makes it much easier to follow a weather system’s progress. • A storm with a name takes on a personality all its own, which adds to awareness. • In today’s social...
