Hello from everyone at the Burns Branch Library! We would like to let everyone know that the library will be closed Monday, Feb. 18, in observance of Presidents’ Day. While we are on the subject of holidays did you know that February is National African American Month? Stop by the library and check out our display of books on presidents or check out a book about African American history. Did you know that Presidents’ Day never falls on the actual birthday of any American president? Four chief executives — George Washington, William Henry Harri...

Can you believe February is already here? I was going to say I’m ready for spring but I think we have had spring weather all winter. Does that mean we will have winter in the spring? Maybe we will just skip winter this year, but we need some moisture! A wet rainy spring could be nice. Burns Branch Library is hosting Cupcakes and Canvas on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. Families and children will create a mural and we’ll hang it on the library wall. You’ll also have fun decorating a cupcake or two! The library partners with the ALEX program so on...

We want to thank the ten young people who braved the weather on Friday and attended our Buckaroo Days! They had a great time making chocolate cake in the microwave and participating in the bubble gum contest! Here’s the recipe for a one-serving chocolate cake made in the microwave. This is a delicious mix between a brownie and cake. Emergency Chocolate Cake (individual serving) Spray the inside of a mug with nonstick spray, then add the following ingredients: 2 Tbsp. cake flour (regular flour is also fine) 2 Tbsp. sugar ½ tsp. baking powder 2...

Sorry to have to disappoint the Mayan Calendar that predicted the end of civilization that we know of, but we are all still here. As Friday’s dawn began sweeping across the globe, there was no sign of an apocalypse. Do you ever wonder why we fall for such nonsense? Maybe we should just live for the day and be thankful for what we have and not worry so much about will happen in the future. I know I’m very thankful for the past week’s snow storm that dropped 8 inches. We hope everyone was home when the snow began to fall on Tuesday night. I, of c...

How is everyone doing with their Christmas shopping and decorating? I think I’m about finished with my shopping. I have one more present to buy and two stocking stuffers and I’m finished. Now, as far as decorating at my house … well, I’ve not done it yet! I need to get busy or it won’t be worth carrying all the decorations up from the basement. How about wrapping presents? Do you have all your presents wrapped? I say every year that I’m going to wrap them as I buy them so I don’t have to do a wrapping marathon the night before, but it seems...

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the Burns Branch Library! In 1620, a group of pilgrims sailed from Europe to the United States, on a ship called the Mayflower. The pilgrims settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was winter when the pilgrims first arrived and nearly half of them died that first year. Two Wampanoag Indians names Squanto and Samoset helped the pilgrims by teaching them how to farm the land and build their homes. That next fall, the pilgrims had food to eat and homes to live in. The pilgrims invited the Indians to eat with...
