The Hornets saw another defeat this past week with their homecoming game against Southeast. The Hornets are struggling with holding on to the ball and their offensive game needs to be shored up in order to move the ball. Southeast reported a total of 242 offensive yards compared to Pine's 148, almost half! With a final score of 17 to 9 the Hornets are working hard, but struggling to find their rhythm. Donte Jacobsen worked hard and ended up with a total of 148 yards, but couldn't seem to make...
The Broncs suffered a resounding defeat on Friday during their homecoming conference game against the Buffalo Bisons. The Broncs struggled to keep the ball, and couldn't seem to make it to the end zone which resulted in a 41 to 0 loss for the boys. The Broncs will move on to Wheatland next in hopes that they will be able to find their stride. #12 quarterback Kaden Laiken threw for a total of 68 yards for the game with 10 passes failing to meet their intended receiver. The Broncs also lost a...
Once again the Laramie County Cowbelles hosted the annual Agricultural Expo at the Archer Complex in Cheyenne. Fourth graders from all over Laramie County showed up to participate in activities involving bees, crops, cows, and weather. Over 1000 kids showed up to learn about agriculture and where their food actually comes from. Mrs. Fornstrom's fourth grade class was there to take part in the activities, and made a great effort to participate. Some of the booths that were there were bee...
Monday's town council meeting introduced attendees to Pine Bluffs new Chief of Police Chance Walkama. Walkama is originally from Upstate New York and has been in Pine since 2013. Walkama was stationed in Cheyenne in 2004 and fell in love with our great state. He and his wife are both avid outdoor lovers and have added a new baby to their family. Still a member of the Air National Guard, Walkama was just commissioned as a Medical Corps Officer. Walkama has been with the police department here in...
On April 20, 1999, Rachel Joy Scott became the first victim in the Columbine High School shooting. Rachel was known as a bright light, a shining example, and a genuinely nice person. People who knew Rachel often speak of how kind she was, and how much she honestly wanted to make a change in the world around her. There is no way to know what kind of person Rachel would have grown up to be, but even in death, she continues to touch the lives of others. According to the National Center for School...
This weekend at the Pine Bluffs Distillery three new whiskeys made their debut. Chad and Theresa Brown were on hand along with the soulful sounds of Canadian duo Winnie Brave to introduce Pine to these three new flavors. "Spring" sipping whiskey with hints of hibiscus and honey, this smooth creation is a hit with the locals alongside its sister "Summer" with its orange vanilla flavor. I tried the "Summer" whiskey in an Afternoon Tea. With some crushed mint and ice this was a refreshingly cold...
The idea of the challenge coin can possibly be dated back to ancient Rome. It is said that if a soldier performed well during battle he would be paid his daily wages plus one extra coin. Some historians say that the extra coin was specially stamped with the legion that it came from, and many of the soldiers would save that particular coin. It's unclear where the modern practice of handing out coins comes from. There is a story of a wealthy officer from World War I that had bronze medallions...
The Burns Broncs played hard last Friday but were unable to squeeze past the Moorcroft Wolves With a final score of 32 to 38 the Wolves managed to push by the Broncs by the end of the game. Starting in the first quarter the Broncs quarterback Kaden Laiken was able to run 41 yards for a touchdown for the first score of the game. Soon after, Laiken completed a pass to #44 Tanner Wilson for a 31 yard touchdown, bringing the score to 12/0 although the Broncs seemed to struggle to get that extra...
Friday the 13th was certainly an unlucky day for the Pine Bluffs Hornets as the fell in their first conference game to the Wright Panthers. With a final score of 25 to 7 the Hornets are having a hard time finding their stride for the season just yet. “We cant win if we turn the ball over 5 times and allow a kickoff return for a touchdown.” Stated Coach Gray. The lone touchdown for the game was scored by #14 Donte Jacobsen although he struggled to keep the ball as he ended up throwing four interceptions this game. #91 Michael Shain was able to...
Cheyenne Civic Center will get a chance to host legends this Sunday night when they bring in eight time gold record winning Kansas. The band debuted their first album in 1974 and haven't looked back since. That first album solidified the band and created the sound that they would become famous for. A mix of what would be considered American Rock and complex symphonic arrangements cemented Kansas in to the annals of rock and roll history. Kansas has produced fifteen studio albums, five live...
In an emotional and sometimes heated debate the Burns Town Council once again dealt with the topic of using personal vehicles to arrive at emergency calls. In last month's council meeting Mayor Jim Clark announced that the towns liability insurance would no longer cover the use of personal vehicles during an emergency call. Since then there has been a problem getting responders to a call. "I am absolutely freaked out about this because I am going on month number two of no responses." Stated...
Good food, good company, and an election turn out that put the town hall to shame. With an overwhelming 47 votes, Leo Urbanek won a seat on the senior center board. A familiar face from the Lions Club, Urbanek has promised to work hard to serve the senior population of Pine Bluffs. Current president Dema Gilbert wanted to remind all in attendance that there would be an election for a new president during the next meeting. Director Alisha Michaud reported that the center has seen steady numbers...
Taking part in the Veteran's History Project (VHP) this weekend was more than just an interview for me. In 2017 there was an estimated 47,220 veterans living in the state of Wyoming, of those only 267 have participated in the VHP. What this means for the state is that there are approximately 46,953 vets here that have not had their stories recorded. Those of us who served in the past know that today's military is very different from the one that our forefathers served in and the one before that...
In their first home game the Burn's Broncs were able to put away the Wright Panthers on Friday with a final score of 32-6 even though the game was stopped in the 4th quarter due to lightning. Defense played well only giving up 138 total yards. Seniors Ben Banville and Tanner Wilson were also excellent defensively. Offense was on point with #34 Boe Clayson amassing 277 yards rushing on 21 carries that included an amazing 95 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Quarterback #1 Kaden Lakin...
September is Wyoming Archeology Awareness Month, and as luck would have it Pine Bluffs is home to its very own archeology dig. Nestled up in the side of the bluffs the High Plains Archeological Center is one of Pine's hidden gems. Staffed by tour guide Lucy Waldroupe and project leader Fran Purkey, the site is home to much of the history of Pine Bluffs. Charles A. Reher, University of Wyoming's professor of Archeology and Anthropology grew up in Pine Bluffs, and thought that the area would be a...
For those with school aged children, testing has been something that is an inevitable part of every school year. For those of us that are long done with school, memories of the all day long SAT testing still linger somewhere in the backs of our minds. Endless hours of filling in bubbles and flipping pages in the test booklet still haunt our dreams. The problem with these tests was the fact that neither students nor parents really knew what the scores looked like until the next year. Wyoming hopes to correct this with the WYTOPP test. Adopted...
Tuesday’s town council meeting opened with a discussion of the water main break this past winter. While crews worked diligently to open and close valves to divert the water, there was still several hours that residents went without water. This time could have been shortened drastically had there been a map of the current water valve and hydrant system. The system in place now will get town workers within three meters of a valve; however, there are still about forty to fifty valves in town that need to be mapped. The infrastructure is already m...
America’s veterans have shaped the history of this country from its inception, and many of those histories are being lost as these brave men and women pass. Senator Mike Enzi and his wife Diana are encouraging Wyoming’s veterans to do their part to keep this from happening. On September 7, 2019, the Library of Congress in collaboration with the senator are sponsoring the Veteran’s History Project. Congress established this project in 2000 as an effort to preserve the stories that veterans are willing to share about their service. By colle...
In an effort to show support for the volunteer firefighters that give of their time across the country, Anheuser Busch and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) have pledged to provide one million cans of emergency drinking water for wildland firefighters. One of our local fire departments has actually received one of these deliveries. Laramie County Fire District #3 (Albin) took delivery of their water on August 16, 2019, Corey McNair was on hand that Friday to take delivery of the water...
In this day and age the question many people will ask themselves when it comes time to vote is whether or not their vote even counts for anything. That question is especially relevant when it comes to Wyoming’s optional one cent tax, or in this area better known as the “six penny money”. Although many folks will faithfully show up to the polls whenever they are open, not everyone will understand exactly what they are voting for especially when it comes to the propositions that often come at the end of the ballot. Hopefully, this will clari...
On August 9, 2019, at about 9:50 a.m. two fire trucks were dispatched to Blair St. at the 400 block in response to a fire there. When they arrived there was a shed actively on fire. Firefighters were worried that the neighboring houses could possibly catch, so they worked quickly and had the fire our in about 20 to 25 minutes. No one was hurt, and there was no obvious cause of the fire, so as of this date there is still no determination. On a side note, the LCFD #5 would like the residents of Pi...
Pheasants Forever partnered with the Wyoming Game and Fish pulled off another successful Family Fun Day this last weekend complete with an amazing pulled pork lunch prepared by Pine's one and only Chad Brown and his hard working volunteers. A beautiful day that culminated in good food, awesome education, and family fun. Upon arrival Kristie Gade and Theresa Brown were there with smiles on to check in those that had registered and hand out free t-shirts, eye protection, and ear protection. Next...
School has started and for some of our kiddos that means new teachers. This year Laramie County School District number 2 has found some of the best and brightest to grace our school hallways, and educate our children. Superintendent Abrams feels much the same way. "You can only build a great school district with great people, and we have the greatest old and new staff around. We also encourage parents to participate as well letting us know where we are succeeding and where our challenges are as...
Mondays town council meeting opened with the introduction of Resolution 2019-07, a JPA loan application for construction of a new terminal and hangar at the airport. While the terminal is federally funded the hangar itself is locally funded at a cost of approximately 200,000 dollars which would be covered by the loan. It is anticipated that there will be a tenant in the hangar itself and those lease fees would be covered by said tenant. The application is to be submitted before the December board meeting with hopes that a decision would be...
The Pine Bluffs Library finished off their summer reading program with a party at the Texas Trail Museum this last Saturday. Molly Williams was on hand with ice cream and pony rides to reward those kids who were able to complete either their 25 books, 25 days, or 25 hours of reading this summer. Jim Vancise, Robin Roberts, and her daughter Gabby Roberts were there as well donating their time and their horses to help with the fun. Offering big rides on So Quili and rides for the little ones on...
