CHEYENNE - Airmen with the Wyoming Air National Guard's 153rd Airlift Wing were hard at work preparing for a deployment last week. They weren't going to a combat zone, nor were they training for it. The 153rd was preparing to help battle wildfires in Colorado. Since the 1970s, the U.S. Forest Service has partnered with the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard to help fight fires. Wyoming's Air Guard unit flies C-130 cargo aircraft. A typical combat mission can involve troop transport or...
Donald Anderson has called the Albin area home since 1929. Saturday, along with his wife, Vernida, he will take part in the annual Albin Day parade as grand marshal. “He has deep roots here,” Vernida said. “I guess that’s why they asked us to be grand marshals.” Donald and Vernida married in 1988 after their previous spouses passed away. They met through mutual friends, said Vernida. Donald has been a farmer in the area all of his life. Vernida taught school in Colorado before moving to LaGrange and teaching there for several decades....
Republican candidates for federal, statewide and local offices had a chance to meet Laramie County residents and give their reasons to be elected to office last week during the Lawrence Anderson Memorial Politics and Pie Social held in Pine Bluffs Sunday. Event organizers touted that each candidate gets an even footing to speak directly to Laramie County voters be it well-known incumbents such as U.S. Senator John Barrasso or relatively unknown candidates. Each had four minutes to speak....
As many know, the fourth of July, otherwise known as Independence Day is the day that we celebrate the acceptance or adoption, as it is also referred to, of the Declaration of Independence. For some this means a full out celebration including speeches, readings of said Declaration, a BBQ, wearing red white and blue, and of course, a night filled with fireworks. Fireworks were always one of my absolute favorite parts, coming in all sorts of colors and ranging in sizes, filling the night sky with beauty. Fireworks aren’t only seen once a year but...
With summer vacation in full-swing, area children are getting their first taste of America's pastime. On Monday, children from Burns were in Grover for a friendly T-ball game....
Living in a small town has many pros and many cons, one in particular being how many jobs are available and how many people are looking for jobs. Recently I moved to Colorado, and the windows of opportunity seemed much wider, as there were many more businesses around me to look at to find work. However, the jobs still have similar cons as they did when looking for work in a small town. There are still many people searching for employment but only so many jobs. With the population here being around 80,000 and the population of Pine Bluffs being...
Pine Bluffs High School chemistry teacher Kendra Roeder doesn't usually let students take phone calls in her class, but she made an exception for Wyatt Fornstrom last March. That's what you do when West Point comes calling. Fornstrom was sitting in Roeder's college-level chemistry class when he learned he'd been accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. "She's one of the strictest teachers we have in our school," Fornstrom said. "I just showed her my phone, that it...
A Pine Bluffs man is asking the community for help after losing a piece of equipment that helps him get around. Gary Shandera was herding cattle on a dirt bike in 2011 when he hit a badger hole. He fell off the bike and in the process injured his spinal cord. “The cows had gotten out,” Shandera said. “I was out on my motorcycle chasing them back in when I hit a badger hole. “I somersaulted off the bike and injured my spinal cord.” He was life flighted from the site of the wreck to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. After that, he...

Pine Bluffs Town Council voted 4-0 Monday night to allow the practice. Each year, the council wil...
With summer now here, many kids are ecstatic that it means no more school. However, that isn't the way it is for every student. Many schools have kids going to summer school, which is traditionally in June. Summer school was originally to make up for failed classes, to receive one-on-one help, and to recover or make up lost credits. Because of these factors being the primary reason for summer school becoming a need and for some, a necessity, a new plan was devised. PBHS started offering Friday school along with the regular four-day school...
About 100 spectators packed the Pine Bluffs Veterans Memorial Plaza Tuesday to dedicate a tribute to veterans that has been in the works for years now. U.S. Senator John Barrasso, Wyoming Governor Matt Mead and other dignitaries were on hand for Tuesday's ceremony. Earlier this month, a mural stretching across the north wall at the veterans plaza was installed by a crew from Salt Lake City. It includes American landmarks from USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C....
Each year, residents from Pine Bluffs and surrounding areas congregate to put on a community-wide garage sale. This year’s is set to kick off Saturday. Pine Bluffs recreation director Sonja Fornstrom said the event gives people from out of town a reason to come to Pine Bluffs for a morning of garage sales. When people in larger communities like Cheyenne, for example, go on a weekend garage sale trip, they often look for places in the same neighborhood. Pine Bluffs is like a big neighborhood in that regard, Fornstrom said. Twenty-eight v...

Twenty-nine students took the first steps of the rest of their lives Sunday at Burns High School before a gym filled with friends and family. "This packed gym is only one of many examples I can remember of growing up in a very supportive community," Valedictorian Reese Burnett said. For Burnett, high school has been a journey of trials and tribulations. When he started junior high basketball, Burnett traveled to Kimball with the rest of his teammates. When the B-team took the court, Burnett...
Pine Bluffs Town Council members on Monday passed a resolution paving the way to relocate the Main Street railroad crossing. The council briefly discussed the resolution at their meeting earlier this month, but did not take any formal action. Monday’s resolution begins the process of relocating the crossing from North Main Street to Butler Street in Pine Bluffs. Mayor Alan Curtis said the resolution has been a pet project of his over the past few years. The Wyoming Department of Transportation will work with Union Pacific Railroad and the t...
Governor Matt Mead and other dignitaries will be in Pine Bluffs next week to dedicate the recently installed “America the Beautiful Mural.” The mural was installed last week after years of work from Pine Bluffs resident Larry Silvey. Located at 211 Main Street in Pine Bluffs, the mural was just the latest piece of artwork honoring veterans to be added to the Pine Bluffs Veterans Memorial Plaza. In 2016, statues representing members of the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy were added. Governor Mead was on hand for that pre...
The Pine Bluffs Hornets capped off an impressive year with a third-place finish at the Wyoming High School State Track and FIeld Meet in Casper over the weekend. Lovell won the title with Pine Bluffs narrowly finishing behind Big Horn. Head Coach Dustin Lee said it's difficult to compete against Lovell at the state level given they're the largest 2A school in the state. In addition to contributing to a third-place overall finish, Tucker Norman won state in the discus throw with a a distance of...

Larry Silvey got a pleasant surprise Tuesday afternoon. The Pine Bluffs resident was running errands when he drove by Veterans Memorial Plaza in Pine Bluffs. Silvey, the driving force behind the statues depicting service members at the plaza, has been working to install a mural at the plaza that shows famous American landmarks while also honoring veterans. Last week, Silvey told Pine Bluffs Town Council members that the mural was to be installed on Monday, but bad weather prevented that. So he...
With graduation just around the corner, all students know what that means, summer time! Well, practically. Although summer doesn't officially start until the last few weeks of June, the weather lately hasn't seemed to notice. Seniors are done! My biggest upcoming priority has to be sleeping in, but that isn't the only thing that I am looking forward to this summer. I mean, come on, warm weather means water fights with siblings, swimming, camping, hiking, and so many other activities that I've...
Following second-place finishes at the Eastern Wyoming Track and Field Regional Meet over the weekend, the Pine Bluffs Hornets and Lady Hornets have reason to be optimistic. Just ask head coach Dustin Lee who said his team has a strong chance of bringing back some hardware. But things have to go the right way. It's not going to be easy though with a strong Lovell team predicted to be a front-runner at this year's state meet. "If Lovell has some bad things happen and we have some kids perform...
Town of Pine Bluffs department heads will revisit assessing fees at the public swimming pool following passionate pleas from concerned citizens at a regularly scheduled town council meeting Monday night. The council voted last month to assess $1 fees for youth and seniors and a $2 fee for adults. Speaking at Monday's meeting, two residents compared charging to use the pool would essentially turn it into a private pool and deprive the town's youth of a vital summer activity. "The pool is the...
