For Pine Bluffs Police Chief Don Taylor, the presence of drugs in the town is not any worse, or any better, than similar towns in Wyoming and the United States. But the presence is there. "We make drug arrests just like any other community," Taylor said. However, the legalization of marijuana in Colorado, which went into effect Jan. 1, could mean an influx of the drug's illegal presence in Wyoming. Taylor said the Pine Bluffs Police Department is aware of the law change, but does not have a...
Contractors working on the Pine Bluffs water distribution project laid the last of about 15,000 feet of water main Friday, putting a close to the project which began August 2011. "It's been a tough project, but the town's water main system has been completely revamped," said project engineer for Lindstone and Associates John Goin. Goin, who was at the sight between the community center and NAPA, said contractors with Mechanical Systems Inc. (MSI) started the construction phase of the project...
I like to believe We all have a place where we feel safe and comfortable — a sanctuary. That place can be as simple as your living room or as complex as a fallout shelter. Granted, I think most of us would feel safe in a fallout shelter under the right circumstances, but my point is, I think most people define their sanctuary as a place — a stationary place that does not move. I don’t look at it that way. For me, a sanctuary is a state of mind, not a place at all. I guess you could say my perso... Full story
Bushnell resident Wilma Sigette got a Christmas present a littler early this year. Sigette became the recipient of a $200 gift certificate to Texas Trail Market after participating in a Texas Trail Museum/Texas Trail Market raffle the week before Christmas. Sigette said she had used about $99 to buy groceries for...
Third-grader Josiah Clark at Carpenter Elementary School says his favorite subject is reading, and likes to entice himself with adventure novels. Many may think those materials are too advanced for a third grader, but not for Josiah, who claims he can read at an eighth-grade level. Josiah's teacher, Amber Imel, said it's hard to determine what grade level he can read at, but confirmed he can read at a much higher...

The Pine Bluffs Boys Basketball team won at home and in Saratoga Dec. 20 and 21. Dec. 20, the Hornets faced off with Lingle, and played well averaging about 22 points per quarter, while Lingle only averaged about 9 points per quarter. "Once we settled down, the boys took off and executed very well." The Hornets put a lot of pressure on the ball in the first... Full story
I get a lot of satisfaction out of writing. I like gathering information and flowing it into what will hopefully become a nice narrative, news story or whatever I am writing. But the most satisfaction I get out of writing is watching a project all come together. The first newspaper job I had was at a small daily in Rawlins. My beat was the Rawlins area and the Rawlins Town Council. All I was ever required to do was write stories daily and hand them to my editor. After that stage, I left for the...

Texas Trail Market General Manager Bill Cushing said the cooperative grocery store is doing well, but not making enough to make a dividend. The store held its annual meeting Dec. 9 at the Pine Bluffs Community Center gym, serving dinner to 190 people. Cushing said the number of attendants was up from last year by about 40. Cushing presented the numbers and also gave a speech to all store stakeholders,...
Cold equals misery in my book. During the winter, I am forced to get up 20 minutes earlier than usual to be greeted by the cold and a car that doesn’t want to start. Once it does start, I continue my morning ritual by brushing and scraping the snow and ice from my windshield. If I am very lucky, the wind isn’t blowing during the whole process. Just writing about it makes me cringe. However, despite being frostbit every morning, I enjoy this time of year for reasons I don’t quite under... Full story

My Monday in early November, was beginning to look bleak, before I got the call. I was backtracking from Cheyenne to Fort Collins the weekend before, after I learned Interstate 80 was closed due to a crash. I could have stayed in Cheyenne, but doing so would have meant arriving late to work Monday, and I had too much work to do in Saratoga, and, for some reason, I decided it would be a good idea not to take my laptop on this particular trip. Backtracking to Fort Collins to take Highway 287 back... Full story
