Every week I sit in a meeting with the multidisciplinary caretakers on this team – the nurses who provide the great majority of the hands-on care, social worker, pharmacist, dietician, and pastor. We discuss all the patients currently under our care and discuss how we can improve each patient's suffering and maximize their quality of life. The patients we care for on h...

I want to paint you a picture: a 19-year-old who barely passed his own classes is now in charge of teaching your child, a librarian is hauled off in handcuffs for a book some snowflake found "objectionable," and a school board that is bought-and-paid-for by out-of-state interests. If you don't like this, then buckle up for some alarming news: this dystopian future is at our doorstep. Here are five current state legislative bills that would help make this picture a reality: HB 0100 would allow...
Laramie, Wyo. — Jan. 27, 2025 — Hummingbirds are small but remarkably tough. Some species make migrations of over 5,590 miles a year. Their journeys are largely fueled by nectar, which is sipped from wildflowers and converted to fat. However, climate and land-use change are making the distribution of wildflowers along their migratory routes more unpredictable. To buffer against these challenges, hummingbirds use a process called torpor, a sort of overnight hibernation. In a research paper published this month, researchers from UW and the Uni...
For the last ninety years kids go out into the arena to catch a calf to raise and show for the following year. It began in 1935 with 10 kids catching 10 calves. Now, the contest is set up for 40 kids and 40 calves. Every year the members of Future Farmers of America or 4-H apply to do the program. Once they are approved the kids go catch a calf during the National Western Stock Show. The calf and youth have a sponsor. The sponsor supports the youth through the time with calf. Both are dealing wi...
Pine Bluffs, a town steeped in tradition, boasts a unique program that fosters intergenerational connections within its elementary school. This program, a cornerstone of the school's culture, transcends age and background, uniting students in shared experiences that cultivate essential skills. One such tradition involves sixth graders partnering with their kindergarten "Buddies" for a year-long reading program. This symbiotic relationship, eagerly anticipated by both groups, provides a platform...

What a year for Burns Senior Center. The town of Burns needed a place for the people to gather, do activities, and eat food. Katie Ryan presented an idea to the town Burns council in January of 2024 for a senior center. They gave her ten days to set it up. It got accomplished with her leading the way with volunteers helping from the community. The doors opened on February 5, 2024. At the beginning , it was just snacks, and coffee with people visiting from the community. Then a breakfast club was formed on Saturdays that brought in more people....
The Hornets have won five of their last six games and continue to roll. The Hornets tipped off against the Moorcroft Wolves last Friday in an in-conference game. The first two minutes of the game the play was tight. Both teams were trading baskets and feeling out the defenses. But the Hornets settled down and took control early. Carsten Freeburg put on a one-man scoring display hitting 42 points in the game. As a team they raised their shooting percentage from just above 30% last game to almost...
As the Broncs tip off against the Rawlins Outlaws, they are looking for that combination of offense and defense that will put them back on the winning track. Last Thursday the Broncs hosted the Outlaws in an in-conference game. The Broncs started out a bit sluggish but picked up the pace and found the play that would keep them in contention. The Broncs' defense and offense had a rough first quarter. They did not play well and had a rough time containing the Outlaws offense. The Outlaws were able...
Coming off a strong win against the Mitchell Lady Tigers last Tuesday, the Lady Hornets were buzzing with expectations in their game against the Lady Wolves on Saturday. When you have the one-two punch of Hoffman and Sweeter under the net it is expected that your opponents will plan for that. When you are as deep as the Lady Hornets are and one part is cut off the others pick up the slack. Four Lady Hornets were able to put up double figure scores up in the 13-64 win over the Moorcroft Lady...
Last Friday the Lady Broncs hosted the Lady Outlaws from Rawlins. It was a snowy day and the Lady Broncs were running just a bit slower than the Outlaws and fell to their play 48-34. The Lady Broncs did not play up to par. The defense was a bit off and the offense was not on target. The Lady Broncs shot 23% from the floor and only 35% from the free throw line. Josie Barrett was pretty dominant in the game stealing the ball and shooting. In the first quarter she stole the ball from the Lady Outla...
The Pine Bluffs Hornets basketball team played solid ball during their game against the Mitchell Tigers last Tuesday. The Tigers are a fast-moving team and have the fast break offense down to a science. This took the Hornets by surprise in the early stages of the game, but the Hornets quickly adapted and overcame. If there is any part of the Hornets team that really needs work, it would be their shooting. The Hornets collectively shot 36% from the floor and 50% from the free throw line. Their...
Controlling the key can be the deciding factor in any basketball game. The Lady Hornets have two players that fit the bill. Jessica Hoffman, who has been a deciding factor in many games, controls the key when she is in. Her jumping ability and vision to see cracks in the defense that she can exploit has led her to be one of the top players in the conference. Now she has company and help in the form of Avery Sweeter. Sweeter is also able to jump and pull-down rebounds and missed shots. She can...
The Burns Broncs have found the magic and combination of play to take them to the next level and move to the winning side of the board. You can't change the run of the river overnight and the Broncs have been working on it from the start of the season. It looks like they are starting to turn the corner and play some very solid ball. In their closest game of the season the Broncs lost to the Herders by only four points 68-64. The Broncs were able to score 64 points against the Herders. It...
The Lady Broncs' play has improved greatly since the season started. Their play and ball handling skills are far better than earlier. The still have a ways to go but are definitely on the way to some outstanding ball. In the game against the Lady Herders from Glenrock the Lady Broncs played hard and fast. The defense was covering and blocking but just a bit shy of keeping them from outscoring the Broncs. In the in-conference game the Lady Broncs started off strong and kept the game close. Josie...
