On a spring morning, when Burns high was abuzz with chatter about the regional track meet, a special announcement came across the airways of an all-school assembly Thursday morning. As track team members high-fived and knuckled each other as they walked into the gym, the level of respect and honor for the school and team would rise even higher as one of their own received a highly selective national award. Track coach Cole Manlove took the podium and welcomed Laramie County School District No. 2...

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. ~Quote compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr....
Like a race car going from zero to 60, we have have transitioned from winter to summer here in Wyoming. It’s mind blowing! As I write this the temperature is more akin to a late summer day as the thermometer hovers near the 90 degree mark. To think, just two weeks ago we had snow on the ground! I suppose this gives weight to the thought, “If you don’t like the weather in Wyoming, just wait, it will change.” Truth is, I have heard this in many of the states I have lived in. And, while I am sure...
I went on a long bike ride this weekend. The first of the season. So the butt ache wasn’t too surprising. But it was worth it, having the warm asphalt underneath, the smell of the fresh tilled soil of the fields, and the bright colors of the grass and flowers rolling by as I crept up the hills not able to pass the six-legged traffic. 65 area youth will be taking a long ride out into the world these next couple of Sunday’s. In my best “Forrest Gump” accent, I think life is like a bike ride, b...

Amanda Harrision and David Gifford placed well at district and will be headed to Omaha for state competition this Friday, congratulations! Last Thursday, the fourth through twelfth grade students in choir and band performed during their annual spring concert. It was very enjoyable, thank-you students and to instructor, Mrs. Woundedarrow. I do not have any skivvy on...
I think spring is here. I mowed the lawn for the first time last week, and saw the black rooster walking around town, almost exclaiming, “It’s time for yard work.” I hope he doesn’t have the same fate as the black bunny. Some of the town got together for a fundraiser for one of our own. It is so nice to hear the sounds of a neighborhood in a small town lifting others up. Please help out if you can. The Albin elementary will be taking their all-school field trip to F.E. Warren Air Force Base Tu...
In honor of Mother’s Day the mothers chose the hymns for the day at the Hereford Community Church. For the special Shirley Wiggin read “What My Mother Taught Me” and “Mother’s Love.” The sermon topic was “Mother, Be Fearless.” Mothers worry about their children’s safety, health, future, etc. Mothers, lift up your children in prayer and seek God’s protection. Sometimes our plans for our children are not the same as God’s plans. We should pray for our children to follow God’s plan for their...
The village board met on Thursday, May 9. It was a long meeting since it covered business from both April and May. Shirley announced that she is retiring on July 15. We will miss you, Shirley! The power outage last week caused some hiccups in the water supply — if your water pressure was low for a while, that’s why. There was some discussion over a possible variance for the allowance of goats and a llama at a property along Highway 30. The board will make a decision at the next meeting. Verne br...
Our warm spring weather has finally arrived and along with this warm weather everyone probably wants to get out and work in their yards. Here at the Burns Branch Library we have several books on gardening and landscaping to check out. Congratulations to the Burns High School girls track team for winning the 2A Regionals in Gillette this past weekend! The Burns boys came home with third place. Everyone who made state will be headed up to Casper this next weekend to participate. We want to wish them the best of luck and to go for the gold!...

Lisa and Seth departed from the US and headed to Tanzania in August 2010 with the intention to volunteer at the Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT) for one year. After over two-and-a-half years, they returned home to southeastern Wyoming in April. Speaking humbly, Lisa explained ...
It is that time of the year when we send off young graduates to a world of unknowns. Maybe they enter the work force, military, or another level of education. Or some quite possibly enter the family room for a semester, a portion of time dedicated to finding self worth and a road map for their life while living at home. Wherever they go next, it’s nice to acknowledge their accomplishments up to this point in life with gifts of love. And in small towns where family and close relationships are f...
Aaron Tekansik a first grader at Pine Bluffs elementary wins you over with his big brown eyes and gap-tooth smile. His friendly personality assumes you are a friend and someone he will enjoy talking to. “I like math,” declared Aaron. “Grace (his older sister) has taught me a lot about it. I can almost do ‘times’. She is in third grade and knows a lot!” Aaron is also a normal first grader and prefers recess to almost everything else. “I get to play with my friends,” smiled Aaron. Aarons parents,...
Getting a jump start off the last community assessment completed in 2006, the town of Pine Bluffs has completed many improvements to the infrastructure as well as new amenities. Linda Jeffres surprised eight grader Nicole Kimble Monday afternoon with a $100 check and the news that Kimble’s design won the Pine Bluffs Boosters t-shirt design contest. “I have t-shirts that just have words on them and I thought it would be nice to have one that would stand out and pop,” explained Kimble. The t-shirt design contest was open to all students and the booster club had six entries. Jeffres said the shirt will be purple this year with the design laid out in yellow. The boost...
