  • Lessons from the weekend

    Patrick Cossel, Stevenson Newspapers|Mar 14, 2013

There are two things I learned this weekend: 1. Bountiful Baskets are pretty cool. 2. Daylight Savings Time is not so cool. As you are all aware this weekend we did the whole “Spring Ahead” thing. You know, when we begrudgingly turn our clocks ahead an hour. This means that many of us struggled to shake the fog blanketing our brains as our bodies tried to adjust to the time change. So why do we do this? Daylight Savings Time was started in 1918 in an effort to conserve energy but was rep...

  • It's time to fish or cut bait

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Mar 14, 2013

Spring is a week away, our clocks have sprung forward, and the chill is breaking away to warmth in the air. Time to cast a line, throw a hook, and reel in the big one. Fish or cut bait! “Fish or cut bait” is a common colloquial expression which dates back to the 1800’s in the United States. It advised for “swift decision-making,” and cautioned against procrastination and indecisiveness. The meaning of the expression has expanded over time and is now interpreted in many different ways. A true fi...

March Newsletter Can you believe that it is already March? It is hard to believe that our students will be gone in a couple of months. Where did the year go? Academics The students have an intense (and extremely important) couple of weeks coming at them. Next week our seventh and eighth graders will be taking the PAWs test. As you will recall, last year we had some groups do extremely well. Looking at those results, I don’t think it is unrealistic to have one of our classes win the Class 2A title. You can help by making sure that your s...

Chairman Troy Thompson and commissioner Diane Humphrey were absent from the Laramie County Commissioners meeting last Tuesday. They were attending the National Association of County Officials conference in Washington D.C. Commissioner M. The NACo Legislative Conference is held annually and brings over 2,000 elected and appointed county officials from across the...

  • Student of the Week

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Mar 14, 2013

When you first meet Scout Pachel, the first adjective that comes to mind is quiet. But the streaks of passion you see light up her eyes is due to school and family. Pachel, a seventh grader at Pine Bluffs Junior High School, is the daughter of Mike and Paula Pachel. “I really like science,” Pachel said. “We are working on ecology now, and I like the different environments. It’s pretty cool.” Pachel thinks her family is “pretty cool,” enjoying being the middle of child of two brothers and...

  • Pawnee Coyotes season ends at regionals

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Mar 14, 2013

At the end of the first day of regional basketball action in Sterling, Colo., the weekend looked promising for the Pawnee Coyote boys team. An opening day 50-44 win over Denver Jewish Day sent the Coyotes to Saturday’s round two. “We were excited to get this win. Denver Jewish Day is the only team that has beaten Shining Mountain this season, and after playing them, I can see why,” said Pawnee head coach Tim Brunelle. “Their defense is very solid as a team, and it is hard to get good shots. It i... Full story

The Pawnee Lady Coyotes traveled to Sterling, Colo., to play at Northeastern Junior College in the 1A Regional Tournament Thursday and came home with a big 61-54 win against the Otis Lady Bulldogs. “This was a high scoring, tough win,” said coach Dean Smock. “Otis’s 54 points was the third highest points scored against us all year. • Beer, the staple of any kitchen on St. Patrick's Day

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Mar 14, 2013

What a holiday! Beer infused into all the meals, even the desserts. “Warm beer and bread they say can raise the dead,” probably because “in heaven there is no beer.” Or at least the University of Wyoming student section think so. As long as they aren’t chanting ugly slurs about it. St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day of obligation for the faithful, and we are supposed to abstain from work and worry, and have suitable relaxation of the mind and body. Which is what I suppose leads many people to p...

  • Banner News

    Barb Cross|Mar 14, 2013

Hallelujah! We had snow, some moisture, not enough, but all of it is appreciated. I looked at the 10 day forecast, and 47 was the predicted low for the next week-and-a-half. Like the blizzard, guess we will get what we get. The warmer, nicer weather will be great for the track athletes who have been running around town, so please be on the lookout for them, especially when they are on the hill out east of town. Did you make it to the school open house last Thursday? I was in several different pl...

  • Burns News

Sharon Stacy or Janet from the Burns Library|Mar 14, 2013

As we waited for “Titan,” the forecasted blizzard to hit last weekend, I wondered why we name winter storms. We’ve had “Sandy,” “Iago,” “Gandolph,” “Q,” and who can forget our favorite little fishy “Nemo” from the Disney movie of the same name? According to the National Weather Service there are five reasons to name winter storms: • Naming a storm raises awareness. • Attaching a name makes it much easier to follow a weather system’s progress. • A storm with a name takes on a personality all its own, which adds to awareness. • In today’s social...

  • Albin News

    Monte Lerwick and Charlene Smith|Mar 14, 2013

Once again, neighbors, we find ourselves getting a little cardiovascular workout by shoveling and sweeping snow off our walks. The snow was very pretty, students wished it had hit on Thursday or Monday, and I personally would have liked to have the foot of snow that was predicted, but everyone still enjoyed a quiet storm. The town maintenance man recently quit. The council will be in search of another individual to take care of our community. Contact the town office for more information....

  • Hereford News

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Mar 14, 2013

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Carol Opdycke read “Jerusalem Obituaries 33 A.D.” The sermon topic was “The Governor and His Wife.” As we approach Easter Sunday, Pastor Opdycke has been focusing on those people who played a key role. This week the focus in on Pontius Pilate and his wife. Pilate was the Roman governor appointed by the emperor of Rome to rule over the southern part of Israel. The Jewish leaders brought Jesus before Pilate asking for the death sentenc...

  • A different way to home ownership

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Mar 14, 2013

Albert Einstein helped us understand insanity by saying it’s doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Einstein is also credited with saying, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Terry Williams, director of Wyoming Family Home Ownership Program, hopes to help families realize their genius and own their home and futures by trying something different, investing in their fu...

  • Looking Back

    Mar 14, 2013

1 years ago With the pleasant, matchless spring weather, activity begins among our neighboring farers. The weather conditions during the past winter have been almost ideal for another bumper grain crop and we predict a harvest which will cause some of our older farming states to sit up and take notice. Wm. R. Black is fitting up a gymnasium for the boys and girls in the old Davison building. There will be several classes organized, which will include classes for boys and girls, base ball volly ball (sic), and basket ball (sic) teams ect....

  • Isn't it funny how things come in three's?

Cynthia Shroyer, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Mar 14, 2013

I am not a superstitious person. In fact, I think the number 13 has been given a bad rap. I mean, it is an odd number, but aren’t we all a little odd? That thing about walking under a ladder? Not bad luck really, just stupidity running rampant. I mean, really, do you think it is smart to walk under or near a piece of equipment when your action could cause someone to fall or them to fall on you? Really? And black cats are just cute, like all other cats. Anyway, I do believe in what could be t...
