Pine Bluffs dispatcher Carleen Graves was recognized Monday evening at the Pine Bluffs town council meeting for her excellent performance on a recent emergency call. “She was very calm and precise with her information,” said police chief Robin Clark. “Carleen remained clear and at an even level, even when handling multiple agencies. At one point, she was dealing with Kimball county sheriff, Kimball city police, our police, the Laramie county sheriffs, and the school.” Mayor Bill Shain thanked... Full story

Like many of you, my family and I celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday. As we sat down to our meal of corned beef, cabbage, carrots and potatoes, my youngest son asked why it was we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. He said it wasn’t like Christmas, Easter or even Halloween, so why, he asked. My wife, not being big in history looked at me. She said, “Your name is Patrick, you tell him.” I am not sure how the two relate, but I knew I wasn’t getting out of it. Lucky for me this is a topic I hap...
I have a really nice dining room set. When it was first purchased, my family was growing from two young parents and two little boys to welcoming a pink bundle in a few months. And a year later another pink bundle came along. For the first couple of years, the set worked well, with three in high chairs, we had three chairs left for company. But as life goes, through loss and growing up, family members left the table. Not all left for good, but what once was a table I added folding chairs to for...
I would like to again thank the drivers of the snow plows that come out here north of Pine Bluffs. You have come out in the very early mornings and have worked late into the nights. Long hours and can be a dangerous job. Seeing you coming down the highway or driving by on the highway with your bright, colorful lights boldly flashing, and house always felt a sense of safety and security when in the middle of a storm of snow and the constant winds. I pray for your safety and thank you for the...

Mecedes is the daughter of Jeff and Lysa Bartels of Burns and sister of first grader John. When asked what makes her smile as she comes through the school door in the mornings, she said, “math.” “I get challenged in math and Mrs. Ana (Elisabeth Anadiotis) lets us work ahead,” explained Bartels. “I don’t like the school lunches. If I had it my way...

The decathlon tests students’ knowledge through a series of 10 tests focused on a specific topic each year. Russia was the topic this year. High school students from Burns, Douglas, Evanston, Gle...
The signs that spring is here are pretty hard to miss. And even the most ardent change-haters have to smile when they see spring coming around again. Who wouldn’t like a season of clear, dry roads, moist soil good for planting, a brackets filled with 68 Cinderella story teams, and temperatures anyone can enjoy. The birds start to work as alarm clocks. The flying snooze buttons are making their northern migration back to their western nests. The top 68 teams in NCAA mens basketball are making t...
As I begin on news here around Banner County from this past week and looking somewhat into this one, the most current event has been St. Patrick’s Day. Mine started out with a fairly early telephone call from my sister-in-law out in Nevada. She was driving home from just finishing working the night shift and she asked if I was cooking up corned beef and cabbage for today. No way says I, as no one at my house would be interested in eating it. I did wear green socks though, self-protection b...
The village board met briefly last week, as there wasn’t much on the agenda to discuss. The sewer project is complete, and no major maintenance problems were found during the survey. Just lots of tree roots and sand in the pipes … the board is considering investing in a hydraulic root cutter for the sewer jetter so they can keep up maintenance on the pipes more easily. The village is still working on grants for the new street signs. Rick reported that Hometown Hardware in Kimball has the bes...

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Anita Hartinger told about “Common Core” which is a new educational system that will be introduced for the 2014-2015 school term. Everyone needs to get informed about this new system. The sermon topic was “Two Criminals.” The first was Barabbas, the terrorist and murderer who the Jews asked to have released rather than Jesus. The second was the thief on the cross who rebuked those making fun of Jesus. Both men sinned, but only the thi...
1 years ago Chicago. - A thread of romance spun fifty years ago between the lives of John Goode and his then girl bride, was broken when the white-haired couple stood tottering before the bar in the court of domestic relations. It was the little, bent old woman who first quavered out her story. “I guess John and I’ve come to the parting of the road,” she began. “And – and, judge, we - we were married fifty year ago - fifty year ago.” The old man raised his head for a moment. He looked at Judge Gemmill with apology. “You see, judge, I am a...
At their monthly meeting Thursday evening, the Albin Town Council listened to Shawnae Branigan, Albin Community Center board president, read a letter from the board asking the council to dissolve the board. “The board feels the community involvement will be greatly increased and we believe a board is no longer necessary,” Branigan said. “The board is a middle man between the town and the director, which restricts the director.” Branigan explained each event could have a committee which would m...

The Pine Bluffs Hornets track team has been rebuilding and this year that process continues under two-year head coach Dustin Lee. Even under construction the team fared well last year, taking first in the SEWAC, and fourth in both the regional and state meets. Lee experienced the graduation of quite a bit of talent last season, but said he is working with a large freshman class that is showing potential. “So the rebuilding will continue,” he said. “My goal for the team this year is to conti...
