Granite Peak Development and AVI PC presented the commissioners with a framed photograph of the Swan Ranch Rail Park Tuesday at the Laramie County Commissioners meeting. “This project was a game changer,” said Bruce Perryman from AVI PC. “The park created 650 jobs on 3,000 acres and still has room for expansion. And all this would not have been possible without your cooperation.” Scott Sutherland of Granite Peak Development echoed Perryman’s words and offered to take the commissioners on a tour... Full story

I received an e-mail from a Wilson Yin this morning telling me he wanted to talk to me about a $48M confidential matter. I couldn’t believe it! Someone in China — the e-mail showed that it has been translated — was wanting to talk to me about a confidential matter. How could this be? Who could this be? I must be truly blessed! I was stunned. I was shocked. I was … entertained. Like many of you who receive e-mails like this, my first thought was to delete it. Obviously this is a scam like so...
There is a dog, a big floppy-eared bloodhound German Sheppard mutt, that lives in a house on a road well traveled by the Smiths. The first time I noticed him, he was laying on the front porch. He was new to the neighborhood, and it was nice seeing activity in the lonely house. Until I realized he is an odds breaker; he races cars. Not the tire-biting-fear-you’ll-run-him-over type, he just likes the chase. I’m pretty sure he knows he won’t win. And sometimes he lets us go by without even lifti...

Bryce Schnug, an eighth grader at Pawnee junior high in Grover, has a passion for math and Albert Einstein. “He seemed really cool,” Schnug said as a sly grin travels across his face. You get the impression that the eccentric trickster personality is present in this 21st generation number cruncher. Schnug credits his math teacher for “caring and making us learn.” “He’s pretty enjoyable,” Schnug claimed. Schnug also finds time to calculate the steps between hurdles on the track. He runs hurdles...

There are a few things fans learn after a few years of watching sports. One of those is to not leave the game too soon. Such was the case for the first game on the diamond at Pawnee High School last week. Facing off with the team from Highland High School, the Pawnee Coyotes found themselves battling not only strong winds, but an 11-point deficit after three at bats by Highland were in the books. But, as fans know, it’s not over ‘til it’s over. “After allowing seven runs in the first and fou...

Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail, hip-pity hop-pity, Easter’s on its way! Now that the little jingle is lodged in your head, how about a story behind that egg-dropping hare. And maybe a couple of recipes to serve Peter or anyone else who might happen by on Sunday. An ancient Anglo-Saxon myth says that Ostara is the personification of the rising sun, and associated with spring. Ostara is considered to be a fertility goddess and a friend of all children. To amuse them, s...

Well, it seemed like we had snow more days last week than any month last winter. It was the nice, light spring snow, and melted quickly. Maybe it helped usher in spring. And spring is here. The irises are sneaking out of the ground, and the green grass is stretching its blades. It might be time to dust off the rakes and hoes, get that yard looking great for the Easter bunny. The Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, March 30th at 11:00 a.m. in the baseball field. Contact the community center...
For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Shirley Hall played “The Palms” on the organ. Pastor Opdycke told about Palm Sunday by referring to the palm of your hand. Each person’s palm print is unique. Just like fingerprints, palm prints can be used for identification. She pointed out that Jesus worked with his hands. He did miracles with his hands. The sermon topic for the day was “Two Witnesses.” The first witness she spoke about was Simon from Cyrene who was chosen to carry th...
This week may be somewhat less active. At least I am hoping so, as the weather looks like it might warm up quite a bit. However, I am beginning to believe that the only sure thing that the weathermen predict is the wind. If I were a weatherman and I said that the wind was going to blow today in all of beautiful Banner County, or maybe it will not, guess I would hit it on the head! Okay, enough nonsense. One of the reasons I am looking forward to some nicer weather is because I am ready to be...

There are a few times a year that people tend to take a look at their lives and are either pleased or become determined to make changes. Those times are usually at the dawn of a new year, or at a birthday or anniversary. We also assess our lives, or at least our lifestyles when we file our taxes every year. It gives us a picture of how healthy we are when we add in the deduction of health care expenses. It shows us where we’ve been when we pop in the mileage numbers. It shows what matters to u...
Last week I looked at some of the budgets Jessica Johnson, Ag Educator with the UNL Panhandle Resource and Extension Center, put together for winter wheat production on dry land acres for the Panhandle. Jessica’s budgets were for conventional winter wheat/summer fallow, winter wheat/chemical fallow, and winter wheat grown in a continuous no till crop rotation. These budgets indicate a yield of 28.01 bushels/acre is required to cover all costs associated with winter wheat production grown in a co...
