On Saturday afternoon the Pine Bluffs Lions Club hosted their annual Easter egg hunt at Leaning Rock Golf Course hiding Golden eggs, one in each age category. For each special egg turned in, a new $5 bill was given to the lucky finder. Such was the case with the youngster above. He willingly gave up his egg for the money, but didn’t to have his picture taken, so mom happily came to the rescue. How the kids claimed their eggs didn’t matter, like the young lady on the ground. Afterward, eggs wer...
Does size matter? It sure does when you are Wyoming, whose massive geographic size has nothing to do with its great advantages of being the smallest state in the union when it comes to population. Spanning 97,818 square miles, the 563,000 people occupying our state are unique in all the USA. For example, we are the only state that does not have a city larger than 65,000. The New York Times did a story a few years ago bemoaning, in the writer’s opinion, the horribly unfair U. S. constitution, and...

Dear Editor: It was with some concern that we, the board of directors for the Wyoming Press Association, read recently of the American Civil Liberties Union’s decision to close its Wyoming office. Over the years, the ACLU and its Wyoming staff have been crucial in the ongoing effort to maintain government transparency. Without the steadfast support of the ACLU, some of the advances made in Wyoming’s open meetings and public documents laws would never have occurred. The ACLU has been a true and loyal supporter of the cause of open government. Bu...

“It was a good day at Bayard for the Burns track and field teams. The weather cooperated for the most part, and a number of our athletes took advantage to put up some solid marks for the second meet of the season. I think that we will continue to improve our marks as the season progresses, and we get more time to build our training,” state Burns Girls' Track and Field Head Coach Brooks Hoffman. The Burns Girls' team finished third overall, with a total of 54 points, with six individual mem...

In a short meeting, the Pine Bluffs Town Council made short work of the town's business, which included announcing the date for Town Clean-up Day. Lamb also said that he is still working on getting something set up for recycling tires. I like to play with people by approaching strangers and making a comment to them which they are not expecting, and then waiting for their reaction. Often I do this in a grocery store where I see a gentleman pushing the cart while the lady is out grazing or gathering items. Many times a lady's purse is in the child seat of the cart. I start by walking up to the gentleman and say to him, “I like your purse.” Usually the lady, who is nearby, will start laughing, and the guy will realize it is a joke. Here are some of the reactions I have got...

The Pine Bluffs Lions Club, which has been hosting the area's 'big' Easter egg hunt each year for almost a hundred years, once again provided area children with the opportunity to hunt for the brightly colored eggs. This year the organization added a new twist by planting one gold egg in each age-designated area. Children who were lucky enough to find the golden oblong orbs were rewarded with a crisp new $5 note. Once the eggs were all found little slips of paper inside of them were collected by...
This past Sunday was Easter and it could not have been any more beautiful weather wise. Many of us enjoyed family, friends, and food, some at home and some away. Whatever your circumstance I hope you had the nicest time. Although my grands are getting fairly big, there is still one little one that we all get just a huge kick out of watching during the holidays. They have a whole different perspective on things don't they? We worked around the yard a little this past long weekend, but not as...
That little bunny delivered some tasty treats and good times to the little ones of Albin at the annual Easter egg hunt. The Albin Community Center sponsored the event that over 35 children and their families attended. A big thank you to the community center and town hall staff for helping with the day. The next thing hopping your way is the Albin Garage Sale April 16, 17 and 18. Dixie Malm is in charge of the event. Give her a call if you want a table at the community center, or would like your...

Wyoming’s U.S. senators have signed letters to Senate appropriators requesting that they include language to prohibit spending on implementation of the United Nations (U.N.) Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). In the letters Senators Mike Enzi, John Barrasso, both R-Wyo., and other senators led by Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., expressed concerns with both the substance and the process by which the treaty was adopted. “We are deeply concerned that the ATT does not expressly recognize, in the body of the treaty text, the fundamental, ind...
1 Years Ago April 8, 1915 Buster Again in Jail Buster Byers who was recently acquitted in the grain stealing case is again in the county jail. On last Friday Buster imbibed too much artificial patriotism and armed himself with a six-shooter, and decided he would paint the town red. He got so boisterous and made such desperate threats that it was thought best to put him in the hands of the receivers. The officer was called and Buster was disarmed. When they attempted to take him into custody Buster balked and showed considerable resistance....
In the last column, we introduced a general overview of the allocation system used by the NRD as one of the tools used to maintain adequate ground water supplies. As the District moves forward to set allocations for the irrigation years 2016-2018, we want to share how the process works and what we’re trying to accomplish. In 2004 the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources designated the entire South Platte NRD as full appropriated, or using as much ground water as there was ground water recharge. Later that same year, the South Platte R...
There is a developing feed source for the cattle industry here in our region with the introduction of field peas as an alternative feed source for the livestock industry. The production of field peas across our region has come about as producers look for alternative crops to transition back to winter wheat in their crop rotations. The addition of field peas has proven to be a sound agronomic practice in crop rotations which benefits the winter wheat production. As producers we are attempting to...
