  • If pets can't be controlled, at least control pests

    Allie Hurley|May 15, 2014

Summer is getting closer. More animals are roaming the fields and plants are starting to bloom. Some of these wild animals and plants can become a problem this summer. Pests can be big or small and are seen in town and on the range land. It is important to be aware of common pests and know how to control them. “A pest is anything that is going to cause disease or injury to livestock, pets or people,” Dr. Brianne Simonsen DVM, Associate veterinarian at Bluffs Vet Clinic, said. An easy way to prevent pests is going to the local vet clinic. Shots...

  • Spring offers opportunities for Wyoming saver-hoarders

    Bill Sniffin|May 15, 2014

At a recent meeting of the Lander Planning Commission, of which I have been a member for years, it was mentioned that we would soon be deciding on the addition of yet another “storage” facility on the east edge of our town. To which, one of our members exclaimed: “What on earth do we need another storage facility for? The town is full of them!” And not just Lander. Every city and town in Wyoming is stocked to capacity with those ubiquitous steel facilities known as storage units. When I related...

  • Albin News

    Charlene Smith|May 15, 2014

It is a little odd to start the second week in May with a snow day for the schools. It was an early taste of the lazy summer days to come for the students in a couple of weeks. And as the overused saying goes, “we needed the moisture.” If you missed the book fair earlier this week, there is still time. It goes on through Friday and it is “buy one get one free.” Stop by and support the Albin Elementary and pick up some great books for summer reading. The spring concert is tonight, Thursday, start...

  • Banner community news

    Barb Cross|May 15, 2014

Hello to all! Was this past Sunday a Mother’s Day one to remember? We had semi-planned a barbecue. With 6+ inches by 1p.m., we cranked up the grill and continued on. It was a fun time, but not exactly as we had expected. I thought they had canceled the snow prediction, and found much to my dismay, that I was wrong. Oh well, all is well that ends well, and we do need the moisture. School was canceled Monday morning and looking out of your window you may not have seen a reason for that. H...

After a few days of sunshine and rain, a snow storm has hit Wyoming. This is not a record breaking storm however, it is server, according to the National Weather Service. Interstate 80 was closed down, schools had snow days and residents were asked to refrain from unnecessary travel. The snow storm began late Saturday night, said Richard Emanuel, meteorologist at the National Weather Service. Emanuel said the snow storm ran its course and stopped Monday. This should be the last server snow storm of the season, with a few small snow falls until...

  • Looking Back

    May 15, 2014

1 years ago May 15, 1914 The city election last Tuesday was a warm one event though the day was cold. The citizens and the Drys were the rival factors, the Citizens standing for a licensed saloon and the Drys for no saloon. The outcome is that Pine Bluffs is to have a saloon for another year. The Drys feel the sting of defeat less strongly this year than before, as they were defeated by a smaller majority. This will encourage them to put forth a stronger fight for their side next year. The returns of the election given us are as follows: For...

  • No till notes: 'Cheat grass'

    Mark Watson|May 15, 2014

I wish I had all the money I’ve spent over the years trying to control cheat grass on our farm. Cheat grass has been a problematic weed in winter wheat production for as long as anyone can remember. My grandfather and father were battling cheat grass when I was a young boy starting out farming. We were conventionally tilling our ground in a winter wheat/ summer fallow cropping rotation. Dad would use a stubble mulch farming practice to maintain more residues on the soil surface. This would u...
