The year 2020 is forever going to be synonymous with the COVID-19 pandemic, online schooling and students being deprived of some of what should have been the greatest moments of their young adult life. With that being said you would have struggled to see that with the momentous graduation that took place on the Pine Bluffs Football field Sunday May 17th, 2020. The day started off like the ending to a fairy tale, mother nature blessed students, teachers, families in attendance with a gorgeous...
While the wind carried away the soft sounds of Pomp and Circumstance the 46 Burns High School seniors walked across the football field to their futures. For the first time in the school's history graduation was held on the football field, another first for Burns was the graduation of more than 45 students. Students that began their final year never expected to have to finish online, they never expected to miss their prom, their class trip, and everyday lunches with friends, but they held their...
This time of year always brings people back to their own graduation, their own entry into the adult world. It’s about this time that we start to hear us old folks saying things like, “If I only knew then what I know now,” or “I wish I had the energy that I had back then with the wisdom I have now.” As well meaning as all of us old folks are, I can almost hear the eyes of every senior rolling when we start talking. This year was even more of a challenge with the introduction of COVID-19. In mid-March seniors went home from school only to find ou...
Monday’s town council meeting opened once again with a larger number of building permits as residents continue to fix home issues throughout the COVID-19 shutdown. While many can work from home, this seems to be the best time to get that garden planted or that fence built. Keeping with the new standard of social distancing, residents are being seen outside working in their yards and tending to their homes. The council also had the second reading of the FY 2021 budget. While many citizens are seeing the necessity to tighten their belts and w...

Background: Colorado, Missouri, and Wyoming will be a...
It's that time of year again. We've had a really strange bout of weather so far this year, hot one day and cold the next. But I've noticed that the grass has certainly started growing with abandon the last couple of weeks. I spoke with a friend yesterday who was telling me that he has already mowed four times this year. I didn't know it was growing that fast. Of course, he lives in Pine and I'm south of TA. That's a fair change in altitude and climate. Plants usually are earlier coming out in Pi...
Growing tomatoes in Wyoming doesn’t have to be difficult or result in green tomatoes in October. Tomatoes, like very warm soil to grow in, 65 degrees or warmer. The best way to achieve that is by using black plastic or black weed barrier fabric to cover the soil and keep it warm. Use a meat thermometer to take the soils temperature. After you’ve prepared the soil with, either or all; peat moss, grass clippings, kitchen compost, or a slow release fertilizer like osmocote, but not manure. Place soaker hose or drip tape down next, this will go und...
Monday night’s town council meeting saw some residents frustrated over the closing of the pool for the summer due to the COVID-19 situation. The council and the local census representative Stephanie Freeman would like residents of Pine Bluffs to understand that failing to respond to the census could impact some of our local amenities even more. Numbers from the current census will impact things like school lunch programs, firefighters, families in need, and plans for highways. According to 2020census.gov “Census results affect planning and fun...
My service goes back, way back to the Battle of Bunker Hill. I was in the (Continental)Army (formed June 14, 1775) with a rank of field officer and my rank could be seen on my hat with a pink or red cockade. I was a captain. Serving under General George Washington. I fought with my flintlock musket, a pistol and my bayonets. It was a tremendous battle, where over 400 of my fellow soldiers died for America. The British wounded and or dead topped 1,000. This battle was called the bloodiest of the Revolutionary War. I was proud to serve and I can...
May 17 - 23, 2020 is National EMS Week. We are lucky in our area to have wonderful volunteers who give up time from their families, jobs and their everyday lives to come to the rescue during emergencies and time of need. As with many small town and surrounding areas, an ambulance crew may cover a wider area than just their own city or town. Pine Bluffs Ambulance covers an area of the southeastern corner of Laramie County, which reaches to the Colorado border. In 1974, President Gerald Ford...
