  • Town council approves plan for mosquito spraying

    Polly Taylor|Jun 4, 2015

The Pine Bluffs Town Council approved a request from Circle S Aviation for a congested area flight plan. It's that time of the year when mosquitos are going to become more evident, with the heavy rains the area has received. In the past Circle S has provided the Town of Pine Bluffs with aerial coverage to help eradicate the disease-carrying pests. This year, in anticipation of deluge of applications to the FAA office by other companies providing the same type of service in other areas, Circle S...

  • Wyoming once part of four areas controlled by four different countries

    Bill Sniffin|Jun 4, 2015

It is highly possible that there is a small spot in Wyoming which once was bordered by four different territories, parts of which together became the future home of our great state. This spot is somewhere in a corner of Sweetwater, Fremont, Natrona or Carbon County, according to a map created by Velma Linford in her amazing history of Wyoming in 1947 called Wyoming Frontier State. This one amazing spot touched what were once Texas in 1845, Mexico in 1848, the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and...

    Polly Taylor|Jun 4, 2015

The Friday Night =G Rodeo series resumed in Pine Bluffs last week, with cowboys and cowgirls from all over the states of Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. One cowgirl was from Colorado by way of Florida. Despite the cold, damp windy weather the rain stayed at bay, and all of the events were completed, although the Steer Riding and Open Bull Riding events did not pay out as the steers and bulls were in rare form, and not one of the riders was able to stay on for the required six or eight seconds....

  • BLM extends public comment period on oil, gas royalty rulemaking

    Submitted|Jun 4, 2015

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced it is extending the public comment period on its Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) to seek public comment on potential updates to BLM rules governing oil and gas royalty rates, rental payments, lease sale minimum bids, civil penalty caps and financial assurances. Modernizing the BLM’s royalty rate structures can provide greater flexibility, especially given the dramatic growth of oil development on public and tribal lands, where production has increased in each of the past six years, a...

  • Albin News

    Charlene Smith|Jun 4, 2015

Have you ever heard of that saying, "Dancing in between the rain drops"? Well, most of us have been mowing between the rain drops. Not that you will hear many complaining. At least we won't complain too loud. The farmers who are stuck in the mud and the lawn enthusiasts might be a little louder with their wishes for dryer days. But dryer weather will come soon enough and we will groan about dancing around the sprinklers when we move them. The Albin Baptist Church will be dancing around a bunch...

  • Banner County News

    Barb Cross|Jun 4, 2015

Good morning Banner County. What a beautiful morning it is with blue skies and no rain in the forecast for several days. My backyard looks like a jungle so maybe that can be taken care of as I have a young man in mind for that particular job. I apologize for not having any news in last week as I was under -the- weather so to speak. One of the two events that I would have mentioned would have been the passing away of Norma Soule, longtime Banner County resident. Norma will be sadly missed by...

The work will include rehabilitation of the Shoshone River and Trout Creek bridges at each end of the project, and a new layer of asphalt between the...

  • Looking Back

    Jun 4, 2015

1 Years Ago June 3, 1915 May a Wet Month During the month of May nearly five inches of rain fell in this vicinity, to be exact it amounted to 4.85 inches. The ground is well soaked and this with the warm sunshine is giving crops a great boost all over the district. The farmers all have a very optimistic outlook for big crops this fall and very often we hear the expression “This reminds me of the spring of 1912”. On Saturday afternoon we had a very heavy rain and then it continued raining gently all that night and most of Sunday and Sun...

  • No Till Notes: Saying Uncle

    Mark Watson|Jun 4, 2015

We had a flock of pelicans fly over the farm a few days ago. Not surprising considering western Nebraska has turned into the land of a thousand lakes. There is more rain in the short and long range forecasts. We received almost 3.5 inches of rain over Memorial weekend. This brings our total precipitation for the month of May up to 9.5 inches. Included in that total are two separate snow storms totaling 14 inches of snow along with freezing temperatures. We’ve recorded a little over 12 inches of...

  • Platte Lines: Natural resources protections provided through new legislation

    Rod Horn|Jun 4, 2015

With the end of the current session, this is a good time to give you updates on some of the bills we have been watching during the first session of the 104th Nebraska Legislature. Most bills passed and approved by the governor become law three calendar months after the Legislature adjourns. However, bills may take effect before that date if they contain an emergency clause or a specified operative date. None of the bills reviewed here contain an emergency clause. LB 206 – The Legislature gave final approval to LB 206 on May 20th by a 47-0-2 vot...
