  • Bang

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jun 27, 2013

So, the kitchen is where the firework got its humble beginning. I guess the saying, “It’s too hot in the kitchen,” is not just about the stove. From scaring spirits away at the Chinese New Year events to warm July evenings across the United States, I’d say that is one recipe for success. But what about those folks who knowingly get down low and close to four inch mortar shells containing enough firepower to light up the night sky? And with a lighted flare nonetheless. That is the job, albeit...

  • Thought for the week

    Jun 27, 2013

I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker. Helen Keller...

  • July 4th in Wyoming unique but Lander's blast-off is All-American

    Bill Sniffin, www.billsniffin.com|Jun 27, 2013

In cities and towns across Wyoming, people see July 4 as a time of fireworks and blowing things up. But one town tops all the rest in the state and perhaps the nation. While watching televised images of the nighttime bombing of Baghdad during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, I turned to someone and said: “I’ve seen that before.” It looked just like a typical night of July 4 in my hometown of Lander. The Independence Day holiday has always been a big deal for Lander since it is the home of the oldest p...

  • You can't push a rope

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jun 27, 2013

Monday morning I sat in a quiet church next to my beautiful seven-year-old dressed in a new pink dress, listened to the organ, and waited. Waited for a pain that was as sure to come as the ache after stubbing your toe. We sat, sang songs and said “amen,” two things she loves to do. And, although the day was about love, it was also about letting it go. I helped her say goodbye to her desk-mate, lunch-mate and one of her best friends. Something a seven-year-old shouldn’t have to do. But life...

  • Zitek finds the comfort zone, shoots a 300

Matt Cannizzaro Jim Schroeder, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jun 27, 2013

RENO, Nev. — There’s no bigger stage in bowling than the National Bowling Stadium, but when Jared Zitek of Cheyenne, found himself on the verge of perfection at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on June 4, he wasn’t intimidated by his surroundings. Instead of focusing on the magnitude of the one-of-a-kind 78-lane facility and the hundreds of bowlers and guests around him, the 37-year-old right-hander pretended he was at home at the Pine Bowl — his family’s eight-lan...

  • Matthews battles to dual victories in Douglas

    Submitted|Jun 27, 2013

Although she had never been to the Douglas motocross track before, Cheyenne Matthews went ready to win last Sunday and that is exactly what she did. The competition was fierce, but Matthews pulled the Hole Shot in the first moto and leapt into the lead. She was able to hold the lead for two laps, but went wide on a corner allowing another racer to slip by on the inside. Matthews stayed right in the throttle and forced the other rider to make a mistake to reclaim the lead position and the checker...

The commissioners moved on to accept a grant agreement with the Wyoming Business Council for the Niobrara Energy Park project, which had amended the number of jobs the project would ad to the community. In other... Full story

  • History opens eyes

Wyoming Lions Club state treasurer and Pine Bluffs club member Gary Roadifer is not shy about his enthusiasm for the Lions Club. “Our job is to serve the community and help the eyes of its members,” Roadifer said. But serving costs money and often eye care is not cheap. Roadifer explained the Pine Bluffs club hold small events throughout the year, but still struggles with funds. They noticed the Cheyenne club’s “Ride for Site” and how well it did and thought, “what can we do?” “Our communit... Full story

  • Packing picnics away from cold cuts

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jun 27, 2013

If you’re like most, sometime this summer, you will go on a picnic. Sometimes, you are actually at a picnic but don’t take the time to call it that. Farmers get the “luxury” in their job description to “picnic” every day. Little children get such a kick out of the word, I think they’d be happy eating off a blanket in the kitchen three meals a day. But, for the interest of this conversation, let’s think more of planning to eat away from home for a neighboring town’s festival or a ball game. Just...

  • Hereford News

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Jun 27, 2013

The message at the Hereford Community Church this week was “Hope” — God is a god of hope. When you have hope, you are trusting God. Hope is the anchor of the soul. Luke 2:22-35 tells the story of Simeon. God promised Simeon that he would not die before he had seen Christ the Lord. Simeon held on to that hope for many years. When Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to the temple, God told Simeon to go to the temple. Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God, because God had fulfi...

  • Banner News

    Barb Cross|Jun 27, 2013

Last week I referred to our weather conditions as “a roller coaster ride”. Boy, if I had only known how true that was going to be a few days later. Definitely not a good time either. Torrents of rain, hail, and worst of all high winds that did unbelievable damage in a fairly short amount of time; it hit Banner County over the course of two nights and will take much more time than that for folks to repair all of the damage. Some of the damage is irreparable, crops, but most is thankfully windows,...

  • Burns News

Sharon Stacy or Janet from the Burns Library|Jun 27, 2013

Known both as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941; however the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-1783). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle created a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration...
