  • Veterans Memorial Park receives thumbs up from SLIB

    Polly Taylor|Jul 2, 2015

The Veterans Memorial/Community Plaza project, which has been in the works for more than a year, and spearheaded by Larry Silvey, received the final approval it needed from the State Loan and Investment Board (SLIB) for a $124,000 grant that will be used, along with matching funds from the Town of Pine Bluffs in the amount of $30,000. The site of the project, which is located on Main Street, on the south side of Active Care Chiropractic, first needed the approval of the Economic Development...

  • Pine Bluffs boy succumbs after wandering into reservoir

    Polly Taylor|Jul 2, 2015

This past weekend started out as fun family camping experience, but ended in tragedy for a Pine Bluffs family after their son, three-year-old Bentley Graves, playing near Oliver Reservoir, wandered into the water. The Kimball County Sheriff's Department received a call at 6:39 p.m. on Saturday evening, and Sgt. Brandon Loy, who was in the Oliver Reservoir area in response to another call, was able to respond within 60 seconds. He said, “By the time I arrived the family had already retrieved B...

  • Visiting Yellowstone in late June challenging for regional tourists

    Bill Sniffin|Jul 2, 2015

Surprisingly, we saw some “local” tourists from Wyoming, Montana and Idaho in Yellowstone this past week while making two trips through the world’s first national park. Most regional folks try to get there in early May, late September or early October. The crowds, well, they are just too much for most of us who live in such isolated states. Have you ever been in Disneyland? In a typical day, more people are there than are in the entire state of Wyoming. In many ways, Yellowstone is getti...

  • Rodeos, cowboys....and dirt

    Polly Taylor|Jul 2, 2015

It was a beautiful but dusty evening at the Double Bar G Rodeo Friday night. Someone forgot to spray water over the floor of the arena, and it didn't take much to create big clouds of dust. By the time it was over a lot of people wanted to do nothing more than stand under a shower and rinse the dirt off. This writer was feeling the grit between her teeth, and scrubbing dirt off her camera and bad, and from places she never expected to find the annoying stuff. This week wasn't a good one for...

  • 2016 Dairy Margin Protection Program enrollment begins

    Submitted|Jul 2, 2015

Dairy farmers can now enroll in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Margin Protection Program for coverage in 2016. The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating dairy operations when the margin – the difference between the price of milk and feed costs – falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer. "More than half of our nation's dairy producers enrolled in the 2015 program, which exceeded our expectations for the first year of the program," said Harden. "We are confid...

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Jul 2, 2015

Musician Rusty Hooker, from Red Hook, Brooklyn, performed a musical concert for the people in the Hereford area on Saturday. He was visiting his sister, Cynthia Shlaer, for a few days. He hopes to come again next year and do another concert for the local people. For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church, Karel Smock read I Am Your Flag and He Who Died For Me. Renee Martin and Carolyn Ragsdale celebrated birthdays. The sermon topic was Power Under Control. Next week Holy...

  • Albin News

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Jul 2, 2015

Some people work just enough to keep their job. Some people volunteer their time but do no more than show up to claim the accolades. Then, there are those special few folks who put their entire selves into whatever it is they are doing every moment of the day. Curt Fox is one of those people. And we are lucky to call him a neighbor. When one mower broke down, and a fellow worker went back to town, Curt finished mowing the cemetery on his own, most of it with a push mower. He never complained or...

  • Banner County News

    Barb Cross|Jul 2, 2015

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Here in the big city things are pretty quiet. As you all know we had a hard rain last week and ended up with another inch in the gauge. Just in time for me as I needed to water the lawn. So far this summer I have not done that as nature has done it for me. This past week Vacation Bible School was held at the Harrisburg Community Church. At least on a day or two, eighteen children attended the session and several performed for parents,...

  • Looking Back

    Jul 2, 2015

1 Years Ago July 1, 1915 Our Celebration Here where but a few years ago the dismal wail of the hungry coyote broke the solitude of the plains and the jack rabbit played unmolested is today the abode of a happy and prosperous people; on the 4th day of July 1776 when Liberty bell gave the signal to a waiting people that a new nation had been born, Wyoming was unknown to civilized man; but now on July 5th thousands of patriotic, enthusiastic people will congregate in Pine Bluffs to commemorate the 139th birthday of this great new nation. Everyth...

  • No Till Notes: Reminiscing

    Mark Watson|Jul 2, 2015

I recently attended No till On The Plain’s Whirlwind field day at Steve Tucker’s farm near Venango, Nebraska. These are educational field days on all aspects of continuous no till crop production. I was invited to speak on crop rotations on dry land acres in our semi-arid region and I also spoke about water conservation on our irrigated continuous no till production acres. No till crop production has allowed producers in our area to continuous crop with the extra moisture stored in the soil on...

    Submitted|Jul 2, 2015

Beginning July 2, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will be accepting applications for early season sandhill crane permits and limited quota fall turkey licenses. Applications must be received at the Game and Fish Cheyenne office by July 31 for both the sandhill crane permits and fall turkey licenses. The sandhill crane application is unlike other applications in that residents and nonresidents can apply for crane permits together as a party. The maximum party size is two but waterfowl licensing regulations apply. Drawings for resident and n...
