The 86th Albin Day kicked off Saturday morning with breakfast, just as any day begins, sponsored by the FFA. But the festivities soon escalated with what very well may be the first ever Miss America appearance in the history of Albin. Teresa Scanlan, who was Miss America in 2011, stopped in Albin Saturday to experience the fun. She first assisted Albin Mayor Kelly Karkow with the ribbon cutting for the grand opening of the Albin Museum. Scanlan later made an appearance at the Night Show,...
Should women work in coal mines? Should there be a severance tax on coal? Should you be literate in order to vote? Should women be allowed to vote? Should the state own rights to all the water? How many people do you need to become a state? Those were six of the vexing questions that befuddled early members of the Wyoming State Convention who were preparing Wyoming to be voted on to become a state by the U. S. Congress in 1890. That was 124 years ago this month. Each year the Wyoming...

Last week, the warm weather caused a bit of insomnia. Never believing in the sedative nature of warm milk, I turned to the television for a few doses of lousy late night programming, also known as sleep aid. Reruns have improved given all the choices in dramas we now have. However, the commercials could cause you to think you are “not fit enough,” “too lonely,” or possibly and tragically “without the proper flashlight.” One lengthy sales pitch really upset the scratch-is-better-than-box cook in...

Eight seconds on a bull will have a crowd at the edge of their seats. Some viewers don't understand why anyone would want to get on top of a bull. For two young bull riders, it is all about the experience. D.C. Cathcart, 8, rode in the Pine Bluffs Double Bar G Rodeo Friday, in the steer riding event. Cathcart said he started riding bulls because of his dad, J.D. Cathcart, who was one of the bull fighters in Friday night's rodeo. Cathcart said his dad told him stories about when he was a kid...

What is the best part of Albin Day? The breakfast that the Burns FFA provided for donations was pretty tasty. But then the kiddie parade with the Albin Day Princesses in a beautiful carriage drawn by two beautiful black Percheron horses was pretty cool to see, too. The grand parade with all the political candidates was pretty entertaining and the candy provided a pretty sweet spot for the little ones that lined the streets. Team Wanda brought a splash of pink pride and reminded us how important...
The village board met Wednesday, July 9. The health board met before the regular meeting and discussed tackling the issue of unlicensed vehicles as their next project. Ryan Reisdorff from South Platte Natural Resources District was in attendance to answer any questions on the public hearing for the Wellhead Protection Plan. The resolution adopting the new plan was passed. Being in compliance with Wellhead Protection keeps the village eligible for grants for our town water system. The interlocal...
The Hereford Community Church held Vacation Bible School last week. For the special, Rosalyn Reifschneider and some of the Bible School children reported on the week’s activities and sang two songs. The sermon title was “Closed-Fisted or Open-Handed?” The scripture was Mark 10:35-45. In this portion of scripture two of the disciples, James and John, asked for special privileges. Jesus tried to explain to them that in the Kingdom of God, they must be servants. They were not to be close...
Good morning Banner County! hello to friends and neighbors, hope all is well with you. With Oregon Trail Days over for one more year, the summer marches on. We skipped much of the activities, but took in enough to last for awhile. The weather was terrific for the Craft Fair in the park Saturday morning. After the monsoon that they had in Gering Friday evening, I was wondering. Some cars were flooded out during that one along with the streets and over flowing drainage system. I always enjoy the...
Burns Youth Program might play a little harder these next seasons thanks to a donation from Cheyenne Light Fuel and Power. John Thompson, Billy Ward and Sharon Fain, of Cheyenne Light Fuel and Power, presented Harvey Humphrey, director of the Burns Youth Program, with a check of $3,100 during the youth baseball game, Tuesday, on Burns' baseball field. "The city cannot express how grateful we are to Cheyenne Light Fuel and Power for their generosity," Judy Johnstone, Mayor of Burns, said. The...
In 1975 I met a wonderful girl from Pine Bluffs. We hit it off and got married June 18, 1976 at the Methodist Church in Pine Bluffs. We had two great boys. Life goes on and now we have four grandchildren. We visit grandma in Pine Bluffs every year and sometimes get to surprise her. We visited there last week and had to come home back to Texas early Sunday morning. Kathy L. Bymer Sawyer and Gary D. Sawyer started our 38th year last month and as many married people are doing, we’re still working things out. Kathy said she would go out with me b...
1 years ago July 17, 1914 Church dedication at Carpenter Sunday was a banner day for the Methodists of southeastern Laramie county. They came from far and near to help dedicate the new First Methodist Episcopal church at Carpenter, Wyoming. At 10 o’clock in the morning there was a rousing Sunday school with an address by Rev. W.T. Dumm. At eleven o’clock a.m. the organ pealed forth the voluntary, followed by the good old Doxology of many Methodist generations, the saying of the Apostles’ Creed and an inspiring prayer by Rev. Breeden the r...

If you have any information about the photo, contact the Pine Bluffs Post, 307-245-3763 or email [email protected]....
Cover crops have become a hot topic in many regions of the country and are becoming more widely adopted in many growing regions. Cover crops are grown to promote soil health and possibly improve yields of cash crops following the cover crop. Cover crops are also grown as a means of capturing nutrients and returning them to the soil surface rather than losing the nutrients to leaching. Cover crop adoption in high rainfall areas to the east has been increasing substantially. Cover crop adoption...
