A funeral service for James W. Adams, 85, was held Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel in Wheatland, with Pastor Jim Welch of the Wheatland United Methodist Church officiating. Robert M. Richmond, 71, passed away at his home in Pine Bluffs on August 30, 2015. He was born in Cheyenne on July 30, 1944 to Merle and Edna Richmond. Raised in Pine Bluffs, he began working for LuVerne Gade in 1966 at the Frontier Truck Stop, and continued working there throughout its many name changes and ownerships, the last being the Sinclair Truck Stop. He married Barbara McCarver on Sept. 22, 1969, moving to Loveland, Co., in 1971. He returned to Pine Bluffs in 1980, and resumed working at the Husky. He is survived by his former spouse,... He's been on the job almost three months, but arrived in Pine Bluffs long before July 1 in order to get acquainted with the town and Laramie County School District 2. It has been a long time coming, but the Pine Bluffs Hornets opened their season on a positive note against their biggest rival with a convincing 49-18 victory over the Burns Broncs (0-1) on the road Friday evening. The Pawnee Coyote football team traveled to Briggsdale to play the Falcons and came home victorious winning 48-28. Senior Luke Duggan led the Pawnee scoring effort with six touchdowns. Zach Hastings, Bryce Schnug, and Drew Ellis each had one. Duggan totaled 242 yards on the ground, Trent Holzworth had 72. Leading the Coyotes in receiving yards was Ellis with 57. After dropping the first two games to the Burns Lady Broncs 23-25, 23-25, the Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets pulled out the match win Friday night at home. Analyzing the game, coach Chris Nusbaum was able to nail down the troubles with the first two games. “We got off to a very slow start and our lack of communication was an issue,” said the coach. The Pawnee Coyotes hosted Merino Thursday, Sept. 3, for a non-league game, and lost in three matches against 26 players. On Friday, Sept. 4, they traveled to Briggsdale, and had only five girls playing against 17 on the Falcon team. The 42nd annual Ed Dulaney Canoe Derby will be held Sept. 11 thru 13 at the Bridgeport State Recreation Area. Founded in 1974 by the late Ed Dulaney, a scoutmaster from Gering, Ne., the derby is now one of the longest running scouting events of its kind in the nation. The derby involves Boy Scouts, Weblos and Cub Scouts from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado. John Zerck, a scoutmaster from Alliance, Ne., will serve as chairman, assisted by Dick Ross of Gering. Everyday, each of us labor over something. Some with physical jobs in the sun. Some in tractors plowing, cultivating and harvesting goods for all of us. Some watering and feeding cattle, pigs, chickens and lambs so we can eat. Some sit in an office and invent, cure, design and build better ways for us to live. I had a nice visit with Dr. Dwayne Beck the other day. Many of you are familiar with Dr. Beck as he has been a pioneer in no-till crop production in the High Plains. Dr. Beck manages the Dakota Lakes Research Farm near Pierre, South Dakota and will be celebrating their 25th year of operation at this farm in September. Hunters now have an extra month to purchase preference points with the recent change of the preference point deadline from Sept. 30 to Oct. 31. The preference point deadline will be even longer this year – to Nov. 2 since Oct. 31 is on a weekend. When application deadlines fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day.
