Monday night students from Burns and Pine Bluffs junior/senior high school and the Eastern Laramie County Education Association hosted a candidate forum for those who are running for seats on the Laramie County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees. The resounding theme of all nine candidates was that the board must be unified in board decisions and that the board is not the go-to entity when someone has a problem within the district. Esther Davison is the only person running for the seat in a...

Lynda Sanders greets Barry Lee the artist from Torrington at the Pine Bluffs town hall Monday. Lee brought the two murals that will be hung at the Pine Bluffs Community Center. Sanders was instrumental in procuring the art work. Lee used a post card from Pine Bluffs as the inspiration for the mural behind them that spotlights the railroads influence on the communities growth. The landscape of Pine Bluffs was captured in the other mural with the addition of a windmill and cattle to focus on the...
Maybe it’s just me and my old fashioned ways, but there is something very faithful about an old barn. Time and busy humans travel on by and seem to forget they are there. They stand through wind and rain, lean a bit more during road construction and absorb the exhaust of vehicles. Problems sometimes seem like stubborn old barns. The other night the tub was not draining. I did what every single-mother-wanna-be-plumber does. I found the longest flat head screw driver and shoved it down the d...
That phrase has been bandied about for most of this year as the voting public has been subjected to months of political ads on TV (thank goodness for DVR!) and in the mail (which goes in the circular file). The candidates are almost done trying to tickle our ear to earn our vote. Wouldn’t it be nice if true change were to occur and our ear wouldn’t get tickled, but instead we were told the truth? We all know the economy is not what we want and need it to be. We all know insurance is a mess, soc...
Election thoughts: • Tuesday’s presidential election sure feels similar to another one back in 1980. That election featured a weakened Democrat incumbent Jimmy Carter being contested by an aggressive Republican Ronald Reagan. And yes, turmoil in the Mideast was rampant and the economy at home was flat. Polls had the candidates close on election eve with Reagan slightly ahead. It ended up a near-landslide for Reagan. Self-described casino odds maker Wayne Root recently recalled that earlier elect...
No matter how much you like someone, or how much you enjoy someone’s company, a houseguest can be a trying time. I am currently entering my 12th day of hosting. To whom am I playing host? Well, how about my mother-in-law. See, not only do I have a house guest, I have the dreaded mother-in-law. You know the type: she comes in and tries to counter your parenting tactics, she judges you on everything you do, tells her daughter what she should be doing differently and generally wreaks havoc upon your life. You do your best to grin and bear it, b...

agenda, or sit quietly and follow the majority; it is a place for a group of elected individuals to represent their community members and advocate for the overall success of the students and the district. Serving the people — I think that the number one this that we all want is successful students. Whether that means they leave our schools ready for college, ready for technical school, or ready to enter the work force. I would serve the people of LCSD#2 to the best of my ability by advocating for student success. I would serve them by doing m...
Albin enjoyed a soft dusting of the cold white stuff this past week. But as with snow this time of year, it was gone before the kids could get a no-school call, and the lawns greened up again for a few more weeks of fall. In the coming weeks, the snow will cause more travel problems and stay longer. So, we ought to enjoy the brief glimpse into our winter future. The Halloween carnival and chili cook-off was a spook of a good time. Many costumed ghouls and princesses showed up to be judged as the finest and scariest in the land. A few pumpkins g...
Well folks, the year is closing in on us. Here it is November, with Halloween a thing of the past, Thanksgiving fast approaching and 25 days until Christmas. Holy moly, 25 days, is NOT enough! The Banner County elementary had their fall celebration last Friday. Some classes were allowed to dress up, some were not, but all enjoyed a time of games, and treats. Sadly this past weekend was also a time to say goodbye to two people who had spent a great portion of their lives in Banner County. Funeral services for Larry Hottell were held Friday in...
This Friday is a busy night in Kimball County! The high school Civics class is holding a debate for all candidates who are on the ballot for the upcoming election. This will be held at 6 p.m. at the high school. (And don’t forget to vote next Tuesday!) Also, the Kimball Area Foundation is holding their second annual benefit auction at the Eagles Club from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday night. Tickets are $25 (dinner included). Finally, Jessica Rocha is the November artist of the month at Java Blend, with...
For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Pastor Carol Opdycke read a story from the Guidepost Mysterious Ways. Her sermon title was “Listen.” This was the last of her sermons on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit listens to us when we pray, and we need to listen to the Holy Spirit. When we feel the prompting of the Holy Spirit to do or say something, we need to obey. Deuteronomy 28 lists all the blessings people will receive if they obey the teachings of the Lord. The Holy Spi...
Charlene Smith [email protected] Ah, the joy of candy making. That detail-oriented, time-consuming task of making something sweet for someone else and sampling along the way. Granted, some of the recipes require perfect measurements, consistent heat, unwavering stirring, and the right tools. But with a little patience and attention to the little things, home-made candy is rich in taste, and has more charm than the easier option of purchasing candy in a pretty gold-wrapped box. And...
Very few teams end the season as champions. Most sports are set up to crown one winner, a champion, who played better and had the best skill set for that sport. Youth football league is no different. At the end of the season, there is a playoff tournament to decide the victor. Burns and Pine Bluffs both played this year in the Cheyenne youth football league and the post season tournament but were eliminated in the first round. “I’m really lost with words but only wanted positive experiences for...
The Pawnee Coyotes notched a victory Friday night, but the effort was not without some pain on both sides of the field. Taking the field against the Arickaree Indians, the Coyotes outscored their opponent 65-32. Both both teams also lost. “It was another bittersweet win,” said Coyotes’ coach Doug Miller. “Zeb Durst ended up breaking his tibia.” That happened in the third quarter. “Actually, it was like nothing I’d seen in my coaching career,” Miller continued. “The quarter before that, an A...

Player of the year for the 2A Southeast was Shelby Burroughs from Southeast....

1 years ago The ball team from Egbert crossed bats with the Pine Bluffs locals on the home diamond Saturday afternoon and were taken into camp by the locals to the tune of six to five. The features of the game were Smith’s running catch of Swift’s short drive to right, Pewes’ catch of Moore’s hard line drive and Ford’s long three bagger in the tenth. About one thousand people enjoyed the Market Days celebration at this place last Friday and Saturday. The committee served a free dinner each day to all those who cared to partake of the delic...
Mark Watson Panhandle no-till educator I really learned a hard lesson from Mother Nature last week with the winds that blew through our area. I also feel like a damn fool and I’m definitely humbled. We had severe wind erosion on our farm where we planted our winter wheat behind our field peas. I never dreamed I would have such a devastating loss of soil with the amount of residue we had on the soil surface when we planted our winter wheat. Unfortunately because of my carelessness, the soil t...
I am writing this about mid-morning Tuesday. I started my public day with a trip to the Pine Bluffs Community Center with my daughter so we could vote. She was a bit apprehensive, not sure she had a good grasp of all the issues and candidates for office. It was a fairly lengthy ballot, so I could understand how she felt. Leading up to Tuesday we were subjected to hour after hour and pages and pages of political ads, and news articles telling us what rotten thing which candidate had done or...
