  • Freedom is not free

    Marva Ellwanger|Nov 6, 2014

In the week to come, we remember the veterans that served this country in the neverending fight for freedom. The members of the Louis E. Canady American Legion Post 60, American Legion Auxiliary and The Sons of The American Legion will be seen Saturday at the Pine Bluffs cemetery placing flags on veteran’s graves, taking two steps back and saluting both the veteran and the flag – a ceremony each member holds as an honor. The day is in preparation for their Veteran’s Day ceremony that will be he...

After walking over a man-made moat, the library opened up into a castle-themed book store including snacks, posters, pens, pencils and, of course, lots and lots of books. Pine Bluffs Elementary School Librarian, Deb Leininger, said the proceeds of the Book Fair go towards the Reading Counts Program and Class...

    Bill Sniffin|Nov 6, 2014

Know those “hazardous materials” suits that you see health workers wearing on TV? Well, they are not comfortable and they are difficult to get on and off. That is the conclusion by Steve Erixson, the administrator of the SageWest Hospitals in Lander and Riverton. He and his staff at the two hospitals have been working on Ebola issues ever since people started becoming infected with the deadly disease in Texas and other parts of the country. Other hospitals in Wyoming have been working on pla...

  • Albin Delta Club Meeting

    Submitted|Nov 6, 2014

The Albin Delta Club meeting was held Oct. 23 at the home of Martha Cannon. The hostess was Dorothy Seymour. For lunch we had two kinds of soup and homemade biscuits. Dorothy treated us to yummy pumpkin pie for dessert. The speaker was Susan James. Delta Club has known James for years. She was the home extension person at the county level who helped coordinate club meetings. She taught us things such as choosing care for our elderly parents, who gets Gramma’s pie plate and how much fat is really in a Snickers bar. James is now Coordinator of Fe...

These skills paid off when the Lady broncs won fourth place at Regionals. "We made it to state," Christina Patterson, Burns Volleyball coach, exclaimed. "This is the first time that Burns High School Volleyball team has made it to the state tournament since 1992, when they won the State Title that year." The Lady Broncs went in the...

With all the success they had during the season, Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets won a spot at Regionals. On Friday, the swarm of Lady Hornets traveled to Torrington to face the number two seed from the north, Big Horn Lady Rams. "Even before the match was underway, the team and fans watched with a feeling of helplessness as sophomore middle blocker, Marina Howard, went down with a freak injury in warm ups," Chris Nusbaum, Pine Bluffs Volleyball Coach, explained. • Notes from the Editor

    Marva Ellwanger|Nov 6, 2014

With Veterans Day coming up, I am reminded of the long line of Veterans in my own family. My father Jack Hobbs was the youngest of the infamous Hobbs boys. Each one of the five boys were World War ll veterans. I would sit between my father and his brother Frank soaking in every word the two spoke. Those moments usually ended in my side hurting from the laughter that came from those conversations. One such conversation will live in my mind forever. One spring, my father came to my Uncle Frank...

  • Banner Co. News

    Barb Cross|Nov 6, 2014

Good morning and welcome to some cooler weather. Last weekend was fairly decent; but with lots of wind and now my front yard is once again full of mustard weed. And to make things more challenging, we woke up with snow Monday morning! Now the weeds look very pretty. We have also had another time change and I don’t know about you, but I hate them. It takes me quite awhile to get my biological clock re-adjusted. On top of the snow, and the time change, I forgot about the Health Fair at the school....

So, what did you do with your extra hour last weekend? It came right on time, ushering in the first significant snow of the season Monday. The clock gave the Branigans an extra hour with their loved one, Dave Branigan, before he passed away Sunday evening. Please keep his wife Jean and all his family in your prayers. It sounds like a funeral is tentatively set for Saturday, but look for more information at the post office or community center. The Halloween Carnival was wonderful. Between the...

  • Hereford News

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Nov 6, 2014

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church, Pee Wee and Cecelia Smock sang accompanied by Pee Wee on guitar. They sang “A Little Wooden Church In The Pines,” “His Call,” “Leave It There,” and “We Will Meet Again.” Pastor Opdycke then showed a video about the Monument which is located near Plymouth, Mass. It is the largest granite monument in the U.S. It portrays how this country was founded and was built by the Pilgrims. Liberty begins with faith in God, which leads to morali...

  • Looking Back

    Nov 6, 2014

1 years ago Nov. 6, 1914 Horse buyers are invading Wyoming from every direction in search of mounts for the English and French cavalry and it is anticipated that during the next few months this state will supply at least 100,000 head for this purpose. At present, the buyers seek only animals measuring up to the customary cavalry specifications, but later, horsemen anticipate, they will be glad to get smaller animals as was the case during the Boer war, when even the Indian cayuses of the Wind River and Crow reservations were in demand....

  • No till notes "Dakota Lakes Dry Land Rotations, part 2"

    Mark Watson|Nov 6, 2014

Last week we looked at two of the rotations Dr. Dwayne Beck uses on his dry land acres at the Dakota Lakes Research Farm, Pierre, S.D. The first rotation is a simple rotation of cool season grass, warm season grass, and cool season broadleaf. A lot of continuous no till crop producers use this rotation on their farms. We use this rotation of our farm with a rotation of winter wheat, corn, and field pea, then back to winter wheat and repeated. This rotation utilizes two thirds high residue crops...

  • The NRD Budget: Providing Major Benefits For Low Cost

    Rod Horn|Nov 6, 2014

In September, the District Board of Directors approved the current annual operating budget of $2,959,361. These are the funds the District uses for operating expenses and projects and programs for its current fiscal year, which runs from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. Of that budget, only 44 percent, or $1,312,448, of the funding needed is derived from new property tax, or about 2.5 percent of your total tax bill. Our overall tax asking figure is 5.6777 cents per $100 in valuation, or $56.77...

  • Historian presents research idea at town meeting

    Allie Hurley|Nov 6, 2014

During Pine Bluffs’ town meeting Monday night, a historical photographer informed the town council and visitors that Pine Bluffs will be one of many towns featured in his research project. Doc Thissen, student, photographer and historian, is traveling on the Lincoln Highway to photograph small towns in Wyoming. Thissen said he’s trying to avoid towns with I-80 going through them, but Pine Bluffs is an exception. “Whenever I first came through Pine Bluffs, I immediately fell in love with the town,” Thissen said. Thissen will be in town in the...
