If you started your Christmas at Home evening at the community center, some of Estelle’s famous chili would have kept you warm through the cold evening. The proceeds benefited the Pine Bluffs Fire Department. Ten businesses and organizations had their doors opened to the public for the evening as well as the wreath silent auction. Treats welcomed guests at each location, and the laughing and talking among the visitors made the evening even sweeter. Capping off the night was a lighted parade o...
Thanksgiving is gone, Black Friday is gone, and we are now in the throws of Cyber Monday. I don’t know about you, but Cyber Monday doesn’t seem to have the appeal that Black Friday does. Perhaps it does. Perhaps because it is “cyber” everyone is locked away indoors huddled over computer screens in search of that one item they can’t live without and we, that are out and about, do see them. That’s probably it. I succumbed to neither day, thankfully. I did not get up in the cold November morning and trudge off to a store only to be blinded by the...
The day after Thanksgiving means limited sleep and excessive spending for some. Others might settle in for a serving of rivalry college football action. And yet, some find their way to the back of their storage room, garage, or tool shed and pull out totes and boxes of Christmas decorations. When I was a kid, my mom kept the Christmas decorations in the crawl space off one of the extra bedrooms in the basement. I was pretty small when I was little, smaller than most kids. So, it usually fell on... Full story

If football were on the curriculum at Burns elementary, Hayden Pafford, Burns fourth grader, would do extra credit every day. But even without football as a subject, Rose Tierney, fourth grade teacher, and principal Jerry Burkett are still proud to call Hayden their student. “He is always respectful, polite, and quietly considerate,” said Tierney. “He takes his academics very seriously and works extremely hard to understand and apply all concepts” Burkett called Hayden “a role model to all st...
FBLA members would like the community for their generosity for contributing to their Scavenger Hunt for Turkey Baskets on Nov. 12. Three teams scoured the community for an hour with a list of items needed to fill baskets that will be given to less fortunate families in the area this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. “We just wanted to make sure that families who might not be able to afford some items for a traditional meal got to enjoy a traditional turkey dinner” said Paige Thompson. “It was cold, but it was fun, even though our team came in la...
No public comment or agenda requests were made to start out the Burns Town Council meeting Monday night. The meeting started and ended with reports from Laramie County Sheriff’s Office representative Bill Thomas reporting on law enforcement activity in Burns. “Efforts have shifted to Albin lately, Burns has been quiet,” Thomas said at the outset of the meeting. Thomas had no further report until the end of the meeting when he asked for a moment to remind drivers about bus safety. “We’v... Full story

Thanksgiving dinner doesn’t have to be the kick-off to a month of holiday overeating, ending with a regretful New Year’s resolution and a January diet that is as welcomed as the winter flu. The holiday season can be festive, even indulgent, without punishing our weight. Small steps, different ingredients and perhaps a few laps around the block in between parties will help keep your stuffing from leaking out of your clothes. Stuffing, at its best, is bread soaked in turkey fat and butter and a f...

For some weird reason my thoughts have been on this children’s book “Push, Pull Empty, Full” the past couple days. I used to teach pre-school. That book by Tana Hoban was one I used to read to my “kids” to teach them opposites. I personally still have a problem with those concepts. I push on a door that clearly must be pulled open. I pull people who maybe need a little push in the right direction. I see my glass as half-empty, rather than half-full. Or I see my life as too full of stuff and...
Last week I wrote about the wind storm that caused a lot of damage to the corn crop in our region. From what I understand the damage was pretty wide spread east and south of the Panhandle as well. I also spoke with a producer in central South Dakota who said their area suffered loss as well from the wind. We observed on our farm that our corn appeared to withstand the high winds better than some of the neighbor’s corn and I really don’t have a good reason why this would be. We had plenty of los...

It is almost the first of December and our little town is starting to bring out the Christmas twinkle. I haven’t noticed the holiday decorations on the streets yet, but I am sure they will be out soon, possibly before this paper reaches you. A light ice storm drenched the streets Monday morning making everyone thankful for the ice scrapers to scrape off the frozen variety of twinkle. The school Christmas concert will be Thursday, Dec. 13. Santa Claus will be there with time and goodies for the kids. So, bring the entire family to hear our l...

Thanksgiving 2012 is pretty much a thing of the past and we are coming to a screeching halt with the month of November and slamming into December. Or at least I am. Many of you participated in the Black Friday shopping spree. I had stated very plainly that I was not going over there. We ended up in town at 6 a.m. that morning. I did find a few bargains at the one and only store that we were interested in shopping at. While there we ran into several Banner County-ites that were doing the same thi...
The Hereford Community Church was decorated for Christmas before the morning service. For the special Shirley Wiggin read an article from the North Weld Herald about being thankful. There are many prophecies about Jesus in the Bible. Pastor Opdycke told about a few of those prophecies regarding when Jesus would be born, where Jesus would be born and what his name would be. Next week the sermon topic will be “God Became a Baby.” Submit your community news: 307-246-3763....

1 years ago One of the pleasantest social evenings spent along the state line for months was a school social given by school No. 9 at the home of John Adcock last Friday evening. A splendid crowd participated in the oyster supper which was served in Mrs. Adcocks’s dining room by the teacher and patrons of the school. The neat sum of $6.10 was realized and the pupils have already sent for a handsome book case for the school room, which is a very good start toward a library. Mr. and Mrs. Adcock entertained the company in the parlor-those who w...
