    Allie Hurley|Dec 4, 2014

As part of the Christmas at Home open house, guests entering the Pine Bluffs Day Care on Monday were greeted by a large holiday basket – the grand prize of a raffle to be held that evening. The daycare had been selling raffle tickets for the past few weeks to help fund improvements for its outdoor play area. During the open house, daycare director Julie Shandra, along with Hudson Johnson picked the winning ticket for the holiday basket grand prize. The winner of the daycare holiday basket was Patty Medina, who donated her winnings back to t...

  • Deaths reported: split ticket voting is dead; A report of a Wyoming monk who croaked

    Bill Sniffin|Dec 4, 2014

In a recent column, I questioned that in the current Wyoming Republican-dominated political landscape, would it even be possible for such popular Democrat governors as Ed Herschler, Mike Sullivan or Dave Freudenthal to win today? This was in the wake of the big loss suffered by Democrat Mike Ceballos who many (including this writer) thought would do much better in his race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Two Democrats contacted me with some spirited thoughts. UW Prof Phil...

Subway donated cinnamon rolls to have as a side dish or dessert. The money raised at the chili feed goes to Fire District No. 5 and will be used for fire prevention and public relations. • The magic Christmas tree

    Marva Ellwanger|Dec 4, 2014

For the last three years Tammy Tucker has not had the space to set up her magical Christmas tree. This year, with the help of four of her grandchildren Tucker amazed the Christmas at Home guests in the Commerce Building Monday night. Even with the help of her grandchildren Miranda Michiales, Christine Michiales, Phenix Thomson and Justin Thomson, the tree took eight days to assemble. In 2005, while Tucker's mother was hospitalized, the only tree allowed in her room was a small ceramic one which...

  • Wrapping up candy in chocolate

    Charlene Smith|Dec 4, 2014

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. Or maybe it is us that has broadened our girths. Either way, Christmas is coming. Whether you nibble your way through the next four weeks with carrots and celery, or savor every bite of sugar, cream cheese and chocolate, there is no denying the many tastes available right now. Chocolate serves as a nice holiday treat all by itself. However, drizzle it over candy or completely wrap the candy in it and you have Weight Watchers worst enemy. Chocolate c...

  • Banner Co. News

    Barb Cross|Dec 4, 2014

You know I am going to say it, so I might as well. Here it is December, and I just can’t believe it! As I write this today, I am looking toward events up through the 10th which is pretty close to the 15th, which is only ten days away from ... well, you know what I mean! We do have a couple of trees up at our house and I am kind of getting ready. I have thoughts of Christmas caroling, programs at school, and the most looked-forward-to one of all: the Christmas candle light service on Christmas E...

  • Albin News

    Charlene Smith|Dec 4, 2014

By now all your guests, welcomed or not, have gone home. The leftovers are but a memory or shoved in the freezer for another day. And the scale keeps acting up, saying you weigh more than last week. Probably better to blame that ornery little cousin than the entire pecan pie you felt you needed to finish. Numbers aside, I sure hope the holiday was a pleasant one and you had the chance to sit and talk to loved ones and faithful friends who darkened your door. I had the opportunity to travel home...

  • Hereford News

    Carolyn Ragsdale|Dec 4, 2014

This week at the Hereford Community Church, Rosalyn, Andrea, and Tommy Reifschneider lit the first Advent candle. For the special Kathy Zitek read “The Upside” from Guidepost magazine. The sermon topic was “Who Is He?” Isaiah 53 is a prophecy about Jesus, and Matthew 1:18-25 is the fulfillment of that prophecy. We each need to answer that question for ourselves: Who is Jesus? Is he the promised Messiah? Is he God’s son? We can be wrong about many things, but not about who he is. Next week, the...

  • Looking Back

    Dec 4, 2014

1 years ago Dec. 4, 1914 In these days of freak legislation, fanatical laws and attempts to regulate habits and personal affairs by legal rulers, it is refreshing to come across a new idea in city ordinances which, hurting no one, sets as a means of serving lives and reducing the number of accidents. Portland, Ore. is the city which is to be complimented upon writing into its code of law which has made the place unique in one respect. There are 300,000 people in Portland and there are countless automobiles. Yet in the last nine months there h...

  • No Till Notes: 'Direct Harvest'

    Mark Watson|Dec 4, 2014

One of the reasons we drilled our edible beans in 7.5 inch rows this year was to aid in direct harvest of the edible bean crop. Our thought was to plant the beans in narrower rows which would force the architecture of the beans even more upright. We felt the beans would respond by setting the pods higher on the plant. This would allow us to more easily slide under the low setting pods with our cutter bar on our flex head. We have a 925 John Deere flex head equipped with a Crary wind reel. We...
