A simple act of kindness goes a long way for students at Burns Elementary School who have been working on Project Giving. The elementary students are reading "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. There are two main characters in the story, a boy and a tree. The tree gives what it can to the boy and the boy takes what the tree offers. For Project Giving, the students are asked if they are giving and taking. The younger classes have partnered with the older classes to practice good character...

It is the holiday season again, and that means that many families will go without presents under their Christmas trees. The Pine Bluffs Junior/Senior High School Student Council has decided that this cannot happen in our small community. The Student Council is therefore organizing a collection called Buddy Bucks. This program raises money from Thanksgiving through Dec.12 to fund Christmases for families in our community. Last year, our students were able to raise $1,900 in one week. It was an amazing accomplishment and allowed us to purchase...

With Thanksgiving just past and Christmas rapidly approaching, this is an appropriated time to be thankful for the gift of the natural resources that provide for our livelihood, enjoyment and very survival. Nebraska is all too often considered a state best flown over, or driven through as quickly as possible. But those who take the time to slow down in our state and take a look around can discover what we already know. That even our parched “desert” region is teaming with life. As with the state’s other NRDs, part of our management respo...
Andrea and Karl Sontag of Cheyenne do some fancy steppin' at the final Social Dance held at the Historic High School gym on Sunday. Due to dwindling attendance and the upcoming use of the school by elementary students, the organizers regretfully chose to discontinue the monthly dance. "We're really sad this is the last one, because it's fun," said Patty Burbach of Carpenter who has attended many of the dances with her husband Lucky since they started almost two years ago....

Good morning to all in and around Banner County! The wind is blowing itself out this morning, and I am thankful for that. It does not look like December out there either, with no snow on the ground. I am OK with that also, until about December 24th. Without the bad weather we have safer travel for these activities: girls basketball here at home on Thursday, Dec. 11, today at 6 p.m. They will play Bayard. Saturday, Dec. 13 is the huge – and I do not exaggerate – high school Banner County Wrestling Invitational. It will begin at 9 a.m. and con...
Chestnuts are not the only thing roasting on an open fire. The men in red, and not the one carrying the sack of toys, have been very busy this past week with range fires in the area. Three of them were over 100 acres. This week, Jack Frost must be nipping at someone else’s nose. Local temperatures hovered around 50 degrees most days. Get outside and enjoy it because the storage tank of warm weather will run out soon. Sunday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. the Albin Baptist Church will host their Christmas program, “Jesus: There’s something about that...
At the Hereford Community Church this week, Steve and Jan Hauer lit the second Advent candle. For the special, Carol Opdycke read “Eight Gifts That Don’t Cost A Cent.” The sermon topic was “Celebration.” Christmas, which is celebrated around the world, is a time of celebration. Even though the birth of Jesus is the reason for the celebration, he is usually forgotten. Luke 2:8-21 tells about the shepherds when the angel announced the birth of Jesus to them. They were joyful and celebrated. God loves people so much that he came himself in the pe...
1 years ago December 11, 1914 New York, Dec. 5. - The largest single contract probably ever signed in the United States for the purchase of horses was made in this city today on account of the European war. It calls for the delivery within a short time of 25,000 perfectly sound, young animals, broken to harness or saddle, at a price said to be between $200 and $250 each. The horses will be used for artillery and cavalry service. The amount of the contract is between $5,000,000 and $6,000,000. The remarkable fact of the contract is that the...

Last week I had a producer call to visit about weed control in continuous no-till crop production systems. The conversation started with what herbicides we use to produce our crops. I explained to the producer that herbicide selection is very important, but not the whole story when it comes to controlling problematic weeds. I’ve always felt that the place to start with good weed control is with solid management strategies. Implement good management practices on your farm and use herbicides to c...
