Merina Theobald puts the finishing touches on her gingerbread house cookie at the Pine Bluffs Branch Library. Over 40 children and adults frosted, candied, and tasted their way through building gingerbread houses at the library earlier this month. The youngest builders watched as their mom’s placed yummy sweet treats on the house cookies, while older, more advanced contractors hung doors and trimmed roof-tops with candied jewels. The library staff stayed busy restocking all the necessary b...

But spring comes with the warmth of the sun and the rains push sprouts up through the ground and livestock birth new life. It’s a process we go through each year, freeze until the new is ready to be born. A fresh start. To each season end, another begins. With the news this last week, many of us w...
No matter where you were this weekend, you couldn’t escape the news: Two Police Officers Killed in Topeka; One Killed Outside Theater in San Antonio; Man Fires 50 Shots at Sacramento Mall; Man Goes on Stabbing Spree in China; Gunman Kills 26 in Newtown, Conn. How do you respond to this? The outcry from the public has been about gun control on one side and mental health reform on the other. So the question to myself is, “Where do I stand?” I think most people can tell I am not a staunch conservative. In fact, I tend to have Liberal leani...

The big man in the middle for Burns, as introduced Saturday afternoon at the basketball game against Lusk, is none other than 6’3” Travis Romsa. Travis is a solid rebounder and bucket visitor for the Burns Broncs. With his weekly presence on the scoring chart for basketball, it’s sometimes difficult to remember the protection Travis delivered in football with five and a half sacks and over 70 tackles. Basketball coach Sean Patterson enjoys working with Travis in basketball as well as footb...
After musical selections by the fifth and sixth grade bands, a beautiful singing ensemble of sixth grade girls, and the xylophone band, the Burns Elementary School third through sixth graders turned the stage into the OK corral. There was Bart, the bad guy, and all the good-natured town folk just wanting a nice Christmas. In the end, Bart’s heart was warmed and Christmas was OK at the corral....
Similar to our visit to Australia, Antarctica and Africa experience their summertime over the Christmas holiday. But it’s still cold in Antarctica, the summertime in Africa is anything but chilly. There is not a native population to Antarctica, so no handed-down recipes. No one raises families on the South Pole, so no traditions or decorations other than the ones brought from other countries. Celebration activities include signing Christmas carols, parties and some outdoor activities. They do w...
In the past couple of articles I’ve talked about how we have added diversity into our cropping rotations to diversify markets and improve soil health. We have added field peas into our dry land cropping rotation which has allowed us to diversify our herbicide rotations, improve and diversify our soil microbial populations, and add a legume in our crop rotation for nitrogen fixation. Our crop rotation is now winter wheat, followed by corn, then field peas and back to winter wheat. I also talked a...
The braids are back. It’s a trademark of the Burns Lady Broncs basketball team, the starting five heads of hair tightly woven together. The links of locks, perhaps, keep the team together. The braids are traced to three seasons ago when the Lady Broncs took runner up at state. Whether it is easier to manage or looks better than a pony tail, the magic and tradition remains alongside the tradition of winning. And this season continues to be a success for the Lady Broncs, who tacked on two more win...
The Lady Coyotes continued their winning ways last weekend as they hosted Peetz for their first league game and won 52-40, then set their sights on Arickaree on Saturday. The Lady Coyotes posted another win, topping Arickaree 74-20 to preserve their perfect season record. “We had a bit of a slow start in the 1st quarter trailing by 2, but then our defense took over in the second, allowing us to score some easy baskets while nearly shutting Peetz out for the quarter and outscored them 24-2 g...

At the Hornets’ Nest Saturday, they took command of the court and assigned a 65-42 to the record book. “Another ugly win, but learning how to win ugly is a good thing,” coach Will Gray said of Fridays game. “Fundamentally we need to improve in a few areas, but we will take it one step at a time.” The Hornets and Doggers played a...
The Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets lost a close contest Friday to their host the Lingle Lady Doggers, 45-44, then hosted the Saratoga Lady Panthers and sent them packing on the losing end of a 44-38 game. “We’re young and showed our inexperience Friday night in the first half,” coach Lindsey Forbes said of the loss. “ We dug ourselves a big hole before we started to play. We were down by 20 early in the third, but showed some grit battling back. We had some chances late in the game, but just didn’t...
It was a tough weekend for the Burns Broncs. On Friday on the road, Burns suffered a 47-36 defeat at the hands of Glenrock. At home on Saturday, the Broncs recorded another loss, that one to Lusk by a score of 58-49. “On Friday night, we dug ourselves way too big of a hole to climb out of,” said coach Sean Patterson. “We were proud of the way the kids battled back and kept fighting. They showed a lot of heart!” Travis Romsa was a key part of the fight, recording a double-double with 11 points...
