The Laramie County Republican Party held its annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast on Saturday, November 5th. Each year they select at least one veteran to honor for their service. One of the selectees this year was Merlin Otto Marquart from Pine Bluffs. Otto was born in Strues Farm, Nebraska on December 9, 1939 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1958. A year of preparation for memorizing and reciting The Future Farmers of America Creed has payed off for Hayden Hubbard. For the last few years nurseries ran out of seeds, shrubs, trees and nearly everything else we need to plant our gardens in the spring. Even more surprising, they ran out early in the season. It wasn't only the local nurseries either. Everyone, nationwide, ran out. Even the big national suppliers. Some stocks weren't replenished for the current year. I don't know what the real cause is. The dough was being made and the baskets were being weaved at Carpenter Elementary. The students had spent the afternoon time to learn about Native Americans. Three of the new Senior Center board members attended their first board meeting. The Pine Bluffs Senior Center had their monthly meeting on October 31st at 9:00 a.m. The new board members are Dennis Perkins, Lori Kemper, and Jerry Sanders. National Drug Take-Back Day, an occasion to dispose of unneeded prescription drugs, was celebrated this year on October 26th. The Pine Bluffs Police Department said through this event, they collected over 25 pounds of unwanted or expired medication. The cars were lined up and decorated at the Pine Bluffs Community Center on the night of Halloween for a pleasant start to trick or treating. Thirteen cars of organizations or businesses were waiting for the kids. This was the second year that the Burns Lions Club hosted the trunk or treat event on Halloween. Catherine Wissner announced last week that she will be retiring on June 30, 2023. Not only is Laramie County losing a gem but this entire region is losing one of our best resources for horticultural knowledge. The Albin Community Center was full of kids and activities for the evening. Move over, Charlie Brown! There's a new great pumpkin in town. And a new state record. Andy Corbin of Cheyenne broke his own state record this year with a mammoth 1,854 pound pumpkin.
