  • Certified Organic - Is it worth the Cost?

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Dec 30, 2021

Is there a benefit to organic foods over standard foods? I was asked that question during my monthly radio show and it threw me for a loop for a few seconds. Not that it was a bad question or I couldn't answer but it was off topic and I was completely focused on fresh vegetables versus processed vegetables. This is a call-in show so I should be ready for anything but I was caught off-guard. And the answer to the question really isn't as easy as it sounds but it is a good question for the topic...

  • The beauty of ugly sweaters

    Karen Lipska|Dec 30, 2021

Is it ugly, really ugly or is it ugly cute, that's the question at Pine Bluffs Distilling where an Ugly Sweater Party was in full force on Saturday December 23rd. The first ugly sweater was invented in the 1950's. They were called Jingle bell sweaters at the time. It was when the television sitcoms like the Bill Cosby show and the movie National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation exposed the sweaters more. Of course, different countries claim it came from them. Now with the help of retailers the ugly...

  • Pine Bluffs - safe from the Grinch

    Karen Lipska|Dec 30, 2021

So, mom and dad decide to take the kids to the movies for a night out and to enjoy some together time. Upon returning home they find the Christmas tree gone, no lights on the house, a trail of Christmas cookie crumbs leading to the fire place or out the back door. What is going on here? Wait a minute. Somehow this all seems very familiar! This has happened before. Oh Yeah! That Grinch fella, he's the culprit. Thank goodness it's just a movie. It's all in our heads. Right before Christmas the kids and parents got a chance to a have a break and e...

  • Why we need Volunteers

    Warren Wittstruck|Dec 30, 2021

How many businesses have you visited this year that had signs “HELP NEEDED”? How many businesses have you seen close their doors and liquidate or go bankrupt? How many signs have you seen on business doors that business hours have been reduced due to lack of help? How difficult is it to find a handyman or a person to do needed repairs or simply mow your lawn or shovel your sidewalks covered in snow? My point is, what will we do if we lose power and the grids shutdown due to an EMP strike? If our local society is closed down because people do...

  • Eisenhauer Brothers - Marines

    Dec 30, 2021

Families often carry on old traditions or begin their own new ones. The family of Harry and Truly Eisenhauer joined the ranks of the latter when all seven of their sons served in the U.S. Marine Corps over two decades. Between 1942 and 1962, their sons, Don, Delbert, Bob, LLoyd, Tom, Howard and Loren, served their individual enlistments as Marines. The Eisenhauer boys were born in Wallace, Neb., and moved to Pine Bluffs during the summer of 1942, where their father had a new job as a mechanic,...

  • From Cookie Jars to Pickup Trucks at Pine Bluffs Distilling

    Karen Lipska|Dec 30, 2021

"WHAT! No cookies? Wait, there's cookies just no where to put them. Ah well, it's time to overcome and adapt. The event started out as, Holiday Lights Cookie Jar Paint & Sip Cookie Exchange. Everyone loves cookies, and Christmas cookies, oh boy, swapping cookies with other painters, getting to try new recipes, man, what could be better? Unfortunately the shipping company did not get the memo about the seasonal event. The cookie jars did not make it in time. So, the event had to change. The...

  • A Portrait of Socialism

    Mike Heath|Dec 30, 2021

“It's easy to vote your way into Communism. It's impossible to vote your way out of communism.” Author unknown. After our Legislature gave in to the Liberals and accomplished absolutely nothing during the special session except cost the taxpayers more than $300,000 I thought I saw a glimmer of hope coming down from the federal level. A federal judge stayed Biden’s vaccine mandate to private business. Almost immediately OSHA announced that they were not going to issue any rules for a vaccine mandate until after the court renders a decis...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Dec 30, 2021

Mike Heath's guest column of September 9, 2021, was extremely alarming and pessimistic, especially after the disastrous four years America~ experienced during President Trump and the Republican's near' destruction of our democracy. Could a Democrat in the White House do worse than Trump's/Republican's attack on our core values, their sponsored betrayal of our troops, (freeing 5,000 Taliban/lsis fighters in 2020 during our fight with 'them), betraying our allies in Syria and the Ukraine and the 6 January 2021, insurrection supported and aided...

  • Christmas Cactus

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Dec 23, 2021

Few plants are identified with Christmas as the Christmas cactus is. Growing up I really had no idea what a Christmas cactus was. My grandmother had one, but to me it was just "that plant over there". It was pretty for a few weeks out of the year and I never understood why it was so special to her. It was only after I met Linda that I got an idea of what the Christmas cactus was and why it was so special to people. Her mom had several and one was absolutely HUGE. It dominated the bedroom it was...

  • Pine Bluffs FFA had a busy November

    Brian Cox PBHS Ag|Dec 23, 2021

The month of November came and went very fast for the Pine Bluffs FFA because of the many activities that they had going on. The month started off with a community service project on November 5th where members met and cleaned a few yards for local senior citizens that needed a little extra help, fence around the Subway/Exxon fence, and painted the Welcome to Pine Bluffs sign. After the cleanup was done members went and had Pizza at Grubby'z. The welcome sign was in bad need of paint and was the...

  • Christmas Away from Home

    Mike Heath|Dec 23, 2021

This Christmas is more poignant than most for me. I have a nephew just entering the Air Force and facing his first Christmas away from home. It’s caused me to think back to when I went to basic training so long ago. I left just before Thanksgiving so I missed two holidays. Since I was a little older than most trainees it wasn’t as bad for me but I recall the distress that so many of the others felt. They were all fresh out of high school and most were pretty homesick. This is only one of many sacrifices that military members are called upo...

  • Christmas songs are in the air

    Karen Lipska|Dec 23, 2021

Christmas comes with a lot of beautiful things to help celebrate the season. Christmas trees, ornaments, wreaths and lights. Again, one way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear! (Buddy the Elf) To accomplish this a group of dedicated ladies set out to go caroling. Last year it was so windy it was hard to even walk. But this year the Pine Bluffs United Methodist church had gotten a trailer and some hay bales. There were only six people but it sure was fun. The ladies knocked...

  • Christmas Parade in Hillsdale

    Karen Lipska|Dec 23, 2021

Santa paid a visit to Hillsdale Wyoming on Saturday December 18th. The cars were lining the streets to get the perfect spot to see the parade. A small fire truck started the parade and all the floats were full of people wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Four of the floats had lights a twinkling making the day merry and bright. Then came the big engine fire truck of Laramie County Fire district six carrying none other than the big man himself, Ol' Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Santa Claus! The...

  • Courtesy is Imperative for Public Officials

    Mike Heath|Dec 23, 2021

In a free society it is absolutely imperative that elected officials be respectful of their constituents and of their fellow elected officials if anything positive is to be accomplished. It doesn’t matter if you like the other person or not. What matters is that you treat them with respect as a human being and, in some cases, as a peer. That’s one of the reasons we use Robert’s Rules of Order to conduct public meetings, to keep them civil and respectful of others. We have a free society because our system encourages civil discourse and frown...

  • Christmas at Home - Parade, Chili and Santa

    Karen Lipska|Dec 9, 2021

Christmas at home was a great success - parade, food and fun. A Snowy Mountain Christmas was less than snowy but very, very cold. On December 6th Pine Bluffs kick started the Christmas season with a home town celebration. The star on the bluffs was lit to brighten the town spirit. At 5:30 p. m. a Pine Bluffs Police car driven by Sgt. Rodney Kemp with lights a flashin' lead Santa Claus down Main Street up to the Community Center where the crowd was waiting in anticipation. The parade was small...
