Once a year the town of Albin is full of activities. It is the annual celebration for the town. For their 95th year of celebration, their theme was "Heroes and Friends." This fits the town to a tee. Most of the people are always helping in the community along with the fact that they are friends. Albin was founded by John Albin Anderson who owned the post office. The community was homesteaded by Swedish immigrants in the 1880's. The Union Pacific Railroad had built the rails through the area...

The doors and windows were closed to keep the meeting secret and most of the delegates wore heavy coats and wigs. Although the outside temperature was comfortable, 76 degrees at 1 pm according to WeatherBug, the delegates had to have been dripping with sweat in the confined space of the Assembly Room in what’s now k...

  • Living in the Country-A Primer

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Jul 13, 2023

This time of year I look around me at all the new people who've moved to the country from the city. Some are from small towns and some are from large cities, even out of state. Those I speak to want to escape city life with all of its constraints and "get closer to nature". They want clearer air, more elbow room, and more freedom, among other things. Unfortunately, far too many of them have no idea how to live in the country and they often bring their city habits with them. Believe it or not, th...

    Penny Merryfield|Jul 13, 2023

It is with honor and respect that the Donald Eisenhauer American Legion Post 60 of Pine Bluffs Color Guard (Honor Guard) leads out our nation's Flag at the beginning of parades. Some have questioned why the Flag goes first, why not the police or grand marshal? After all it is a small town parade, some ask. Parade Flag Etiquette: Everyone loves a parade. The floats, fire engines, bands and other community presentations make parades of all kinds a community celebration. In most cases, the...

The sun is shining and the weather is perfect for some camping at a local lake. Oliver Reservoir is the mid point between Bushnell and Kimball, Nebraska. The reservoir was a part of the irrigation district in 1909. In 1911 they built a dam to have water for the crops in the area. In the 1970's the dam was condemned due to deteriorating concrete leading to water seepage. The irrigation district could not use it any more. So the communities from Kimball and Pine Bluffs tried to raise money to...

  • Indicators of a Healthy Pasture

Mike Heath Laramie County Master Gardners|Jul 6, 2023

A healthy pasture is a good thing whether you have five acres or five thousand acres. Farmers and ranchers have a great understanding of the soil and what it takes to keep their pastures healthy but for the rest of us, most haven't had the training or experience necessary to know what it takes to keep our pastures healthy. I've had a running conversation on social media for the last few days concerning dalmatian toadflax. It seems as though it has grown with a vengeance this year. I thought I ha...
