Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! Here is hoping that the summer is treating you well. We sure have had some beautiful weather. I haven’t seen any combines around yet but it shouldn’t be too long before they are busy everywhere. We have had family visiting for the past two weeks and extra grand kids here in between. We had a couple of days of so-called “ normal” between the two sets, and now with all headed home it seems pretty quiet as we try to get back to our regular schedul...

We made it past the longest day of the year, now on to the hottest days. For not being known for our high humidity, it sure has been muggy. Just as the sunlight in our days will get less and less, sooner or later, the heat will simmer down. Long days give us a lot more time to get things done. At the council meeting the council members accomplished a lot of tasks. They decided to split the duties of the Community Center director between the existing staff and will not hire additional staff at th...

Hello Banner County! Here is hoping you all are doing well and that your summer has been a good one so far. After the huge hail storm last July I was pretty disgusted by the time we finally had the roof replaced and the house re-painted so I let all of the yard work damage sit all winter long. I am almost finished with replacing all of those plants and trees. I still have quite a lot to do and I am still finding glass and other broken pieces where they should not be. Hopefully we will not have...

Good Morning Banner County! Wow has it ever been hot around these parts. We had a real downpour Sunday evening and you would think that with all of the rain that we have had that it was not needed, but from what I hear folks say, we needed it. My yard sure appreciated it! Glad that all happened on Sunday and not the day before as that was Historical Day. Many patrons and visitors seemed to be enjoying themselves, which is exactly what the goal for the day is. The entertainment at the museum was...

The middle of June brings much joy and light to our area. Some are remembering past Junes and wedding bells. Some are getting ready to watch some local baseball. Some are packing the camper for a grand adventure. Even those of us who are just busy keeping up with the dandelions and mowing are thankful for the warm mellow days of summer. The town council will meet Thursday at the community center. They will decide on a new community center director as well as other business of the town. If you ar...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far. Big news here this week is the upcoming annual Historical Day, this Saturday, June 11. The fun begins at 7 a.m. with breakfast, followed by a fun run, bbq cook-off, parade, games, lunch at the school provided by our local FFA students, the museum sights and entertainment by a group of three ladies who call themselves “Yes, Ma’am.” These gals perform a series of songs that are reminiscent of the USO shows during WWII. The day will wind down...

eadowlarks has returned as our alarm clocks. The sun is turning on our lights much earlier these days. Now if we could just get someone to turn off the water. With most of our utilities being taken care of naturally, there is not much need to shop. But some of us took part in the Pine Bluffs Community Garage Sales Saturday. Jillian Kriz along with Duggan and Demmie came over and got the last plane ride of the day at the Airport Open House. Over 150 free lunches were served and more than 100...

Rain rain go away. The old saying of watching what you wish for is certainly true. The weeds think it is great but our lawn mowers sure would like a break. Maybe in June. As long as we still can travel the flooded roads. Traveling, picking weeds or even mowing the grass, we all have the need to buy and sell. The Albin community garage sale provided a good shopping experience. About seven families brought in their wares for others to purchase. If you still have items to sell or possibly a need...

Good morning! It’s beautiful here in Harrisburg this morning and so far no rain. Everything is just blue sky meeting green. This past Memorial Day weekend could not have been any nicer and it was wonderful to see the several cemeteries we visited looking so nice. I read in the news about three or four types of vandalism across the country to either memorials or in cemeteries and it makes a person want to thrash someone. Respect for our fallen servicemen and women is the very least we can do. L...

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! It is a beautiful morning here in Harrisburg and the wind is still blowing. That keeps me from working outside and is not pleasant no matter what one is trying to do. It blew so hard that this past weekend was a loss so we went to the movies. Have you seen the movie “Eddie the Eagle”? The kids and I went to see it. Very inspirational and based on a true story. It involved a young man with lots of determination who overcame the odds wit his hea...

Good morning! Is there anyone out there in newspaper land besides me that wonders each morning what kind of weather mother nature will send us for that particular day? What season will she pick? It is green and beautiful around here, but cold and with frost on occasion. The poor trees have leafed out and been snowed on more than once already and the flowers are shivering in their pots. And the grass needs mowed again. If the rain will let up and the sun will dry the yard out. On Monday, the...

Often we do not consider the circle of life going on around us. Those pesky species that coexist with us to keep our home on earth “clean” and in balance. Life may be an action in chaos but we still need balance. And those other species. Even the snakes. If you have done any yard work or have been cleaning up the shed getting ready for the town cleanup, you may have run into a few of those balance keepers. The experience definitely adds a few extra heartbeats. Consider the heart rate if you stu...

Good morning Banner County! We woke up after a nice Mother’s Day weekend to more cloudy skies and puddles in the yard. I would think the farmers are getting somewhat tired of all of this moisture. Save a little of it for July please. I did get some mowing done last week, but not all of it. A lot of graduations are taking place this weekend, so maybe once those are over it will dry up. Always has to rain then so the roads can be a mess and field trips can be a challenge! The elementary students e...

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day. The Hereford Community Church honored the mothers by having them choose the hymns. There was a special guest speaker from the Gideons. Mr. Ed Munson read a tribute to mothers, then he told about the Gideons. They distribute Bibles and New Testaments all over the world. Scriptures are printed in over 100 different languages and distributed in over 200 countries. Mr. Munson gave testimonies from a few of the people who have received scriptures from the G...

Good morning to all here in Harrisburg and Banner County, friends near and far! So here it is May and the question of the day is how much snow did you get last Saturday? We had at least six inches of the heavy, sloppy stuff. Visibility was not good and more than one vehicle was off of the road and into the ditch. I am still waiting to see if any permanent damage has been done to my young trees and some flowers. The lilacs have a hard time when this happens. So now it is supposed to start...

Hello Banner County, friends near and far. Here we are enjoying the last week of our April 2016 and it has been raining almost every day. That is fine with me and probably most of you farmers out there, unless it is getting too wet. I am still working on flowers and grass, but that is a work in progress that will most likely never be completed. We can’t have too many flowers, can we? Our sympathy goes out to the family of Martha Bonds who passed away early last week, especially to Marvin and B...

The birds seem to be singing to us again. The song might change again before summer, but it sure sounds like the song of spring. Birds are not the only ones providing beautiful music lately. The students at Albin Elementary have been rehearsing for their spring concert. They would be delighted to sing to you Thursday, May 5 at 5:30. There will also be a silent auction. Don’t miss the beautiful sounds of our youth. The birthday song will be sung locally to a few of our neighbors and friends. This...
