Hello Banner County! What a brilliant green countryside we have at this time. We had one-half inch of rain again last evening. That puts a smile on my face, more mowing, but a trade in for less watering! Yes, school is definitely OUT for the summer. According to the weather channel it will not only look like summer here in the Burg and surrounding count, but it will warm up a lot and feel like summer too! Speaking of school being out though, it may be a long summer break around our house. We...

Summer Break has arrived! One of my favorite treats in the summer is ice cream, especially home made! June 2 is National Rocky Road Day and it’s all about eating ice cream, specifically Rocky Road ice cream. Want to make your own Rocky Road Ice Cream? Just add nuts (almonds and/or pecans), mini marshmallows, and chunks of semisweet chocolate to your favorite ice cream recipe. Today would be the perfect day to make, and certainly eat, a batch of Rocky Road ice cream. If you aren’t into making ice cream, visit your favorite ice cream store for...

The Hereford Community Church was blessed to share in a baptism on Sunday. For the special Rosalyn Reifschneider read “Freedom” written by Pee Wee and Cecelia Smock. The sermon title was “Row Upon Row” referring to the crosses in a cemetery. The scripture was Psalm 33 which tells us to sing praises to the Lord. Pastor Opdycke read “In Flanders Field” and the “Gettysburg Address.” She told about some of the national cemeteries and the history of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day to honor th...

    Zachary Laux|May 22, 2014

The Laramie County School District 2 Board of Trustees appointed a new board member Tuesday, May 13 night after former member left the position. Board members interviewed three applicants the week before in its Committee of the Whole meeting before naming Taft Love to the position, who immediately filled the position after being sworn in. • Market blossoms for spring

    Allie Hurley|May 22, 2014

Before looking around for more groceries, take a moment to enjoy the newly planted flowers in front of the market in Pine Bluffs. The Texas Trail Market got beautified for spring by the ladies at the Chrysalis House. Outside of the market are five gardening pots. The ladies mixed the old soil from the pots with new planting soil. They added peat mass to hold moisture, and then added fertilizer. After they mixed the soil, they picked out their colorful and unique flowers. Then the ladies began...

Good morning! My weather bug is predicting scattered rain showers everyday this week. So we will see. It is pretty green here in Banner County as of right now, and that makes it beautiful. As of today at precisely 11:50 a.m. school is out for the summer! The spring concert put on by grades 4-12 last week was really nice. It always amazes me to see how much those kids improve in such a short time. I needed to pick up some things at the school last week and I knew it was Farm Safety Day, so I was...

What a nice weekend to celebrate our area graduates. A few storms here and there, but the rain, as always, was welcomed and didn’t cause too much trouble. The flower garden next to the post office would benefit from some loving care. Many people help with the weeds and care, but I am sure they would like an extra hand or two. Town cleanup day is May 31 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Anything you want picked up needs to be out by your dumpster. No tires, batteries, oil, pesticides or paint. Please sepa...

The village board meeting was held on Wednesday, May 14. The health board recommended that the village replace the boards on the merry-go-round in the park. They also reminded residents that the tumbleweed wagon and burn barrel are available to use - just stop in the village office to borrow them. They stated that the lumberyard issue is still on hold and that the old bar building is caving in. The village will ask the sheriff’s office to condemn it so they can push it in. Also, Rick found p...

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer. For decades, Memorial Day was observed on May 30, but in 1968 Congress passe...

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Rosalyn Reifschneider read some guidelines from the VBS material. The sermon topic was “Joyful Stress.” The book of Philippians was written by Paul while he was in prison in Rome. Paul never lost his joy even while he was under stress. He saw pressure not as an obstacle but as an opportunity . He stayed focused on Jesus. We need to follow Paul’s example. We need to stand firm in our faith and be joyful. Next week the sermon topic will...

  • Firearms bring back end-of-war celebration history

    Allie Hurley|May 15, 2014

Victory in Europe Day was the turning point of World War II. It is the day when allied forces won over the Nazi forces on May 8, 1945. This day was officially announced the end of WWII in Europe. To celebrate the 69th anniversary of this holiday, the Sister's Grimm showed an end of WWII display case full of WWII firearms. Brad Brothers, collector of WWII era firearms, displayed his British, American, Russian and German guns. His collection ranged from pistols to rifles, a Russian rifle cleaning...

  • Knights get close to golf tourney goal for 10th year

    Zachary Laux|May 15, 2014

The Pine Bluffs Knights of Columbus held its 10th Annual Golf Tournament Saturday in hopes of filling the event for the first time ever, but came up one team short of the anticipated 18 teams. "We have never filled this event," said Knight Dennis Talich. "And that remains true today." Nineteen teams initially signed up to participate in the golf tourney, which would have made it the biggest tourney since its conception, Talich said, but two teams pulled out before competition. That didn't keep...

It is a little odd to start the second week in May with a snow day for the schools. It was an early taste of the lazy summer days to come for the students in a couple of weeks. And as the overused saying goes, “we needed the moisture.” If you missed the book fair earlier this week, there is still time. It goes on through Friday and it is “buy one get one free.” Stop by and support the Albin Elementary and pick up some great books for summer reading. The spring concert is tonight, Thursday, start...

Hello to all! Was this past Sunday a Mother’s Day one to remember? We had semi-planned a barbecue. With 6+ inches by 1p.m., we cranked up the grill and continued on. It was a fun time, but not exactly as we had expected. I thought they had canceled the snow prediction, and found much to my dismay, that I was wrong. Oh well, all is well that ends well, and we do need the moisture. School was canceled Monday morning and looking out of your window you may not have seen a reason for that. H...

  • Town Council talk Reher Park

    Zachary Laux|May 8, 2014

The Pine Bluffs Town Council revisited and approved a bid from American Contracting Monday night to renovate Reher Park. “I think we need to move ahead with this,” said council member Alan Curtis. The Town Council postponed voting on the renovations at Reher Park in previous meetings to look at other options, including installing artificial turf, rather than sod. The approved bid, at about $322,135, calls for the installation of 70,000 square feet of lawn sod and 27,000 square feet of dry...

The 2014 Farm Bill makes the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) a permanent program and provides retroactive authority to cover eligible losses back to Oct. 1, 2011. LFP provides compensation to eligible livestock producers who have suffered grazing losses due to drought or fire. LFP payments for drought are equal to 60 percent of the monthly feed cost for up to five months. I do believe Spring has sprung, I have dandelions in my lawn anyway. I’ll take them to, it feels good to have some warm weather. The seniors at this time are off on their “educational trip” which is just being politically correct in saying that they are on sneak. Personally I like the “sneak” version much better. This class of 2014 will be graduating on May 17 at 3 p.m. The kindergarten class will be holding their graduation Thursday, at 1 p.m. If you are not personally connected to any of th...

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Andrea Reifschneider read “The Armor of God.” The sermon topic was “Hurry Up And Wait.” The scripture was James 5. The book of James was written by James the brother of Jesus. This book gives instructions for daily living. Chapter 5 warns people not to love money more than they love God. Then he tells people to be patient until the Lord returns. Whatever problems you may face, don’t get in a big hurry. Pray and wait for God to take care...

The last few weeks of school have found their way onto the calendar. The Albin Wildcats will be released for the summer May 23. The school will have a parent field day May 22. A...
